Once the stone is located, the surgeon releases a series of high-energy sound waves to break the stones into smaller fragments. Once the stone is broken into smaller pieces, they are flushed out of the urinary tract. The whole procedure usually takes 30-45 minutes, depending on the stone density, medical health of the patient, and the surgical expertise of the surgeon. ESWL may not be an effective procedure for all types of kidney stones and may require multiple sessions to break them completely. The surgeon may also choose to insert a ureteral stent in case of a large stone. A stent enlarged the passage of the ureter for smooth movement of stones and help reduce the pain during the stone expulsion.
