The procedure begins after the patient is given spinal or general anesthesia. The surgeon inserts a thin, long fiber-optic scope called a ureteroscope into the ureteral passage through the urethra. Simultaneously, x-rays guide the surgeon inside the kidneys and ureters where the stones are located. Once the stone is located, it is pulled out with a stone basket.
