The difference between LASIK and Femto LASIK is the creation of the corneal flap. In standard LASIK surgery, the flap is created using a microkeratome blade. However, in Femto LASIK, the flap is created with the Femtosecond laser.Â
Femto LASIK surgery involves creating a very thin flap which allows the patient to heal faster. The complications associated with the surgery are also lower in the cases where the Femtosecond laser is used. Thus, for most patients, Femto LASIK is considered better.
The results of Femto LASIK can last for a lifetime if the patient takes good care of the eyes. Though the corneal correction is effective, the surgery cannot prevent future degeneration of the vision, which is common due to aging.Â
Though revision surgery is rarely needed, it is possible to get Femto LASIK done twice. However, in most cases, the second surgery is performed only 5 to 10 years later.Â
All types of LASIK surgeries, including Femto LASIK, are most recommended to patients between the age group of 25 to 40 years. Before 20, the eye power is usually not stable, hence, there are chances that the vision continues to change even after surgical treatment. After 40, eye health usually degrades due to aging. Hence, LASIK may not be the best option to preserve vision.Â
