LASIK Surgery - Laser Eye Treatment

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of blurry vision or refractive errors is done by an eye care professional, mostly an ophthalmologist, through a routine eye checkup that involves.

  • The standard vision chart reading test is done to analyze the current power of the eye. Then the eye care professional will test an assortment of lenses to check which pair helps the individual to see clearly. This test is also known as the visual acuity test.
  • If the doctor detects that there is something unusual with your cornea, then he/she may recommend corneal topography.
  • A retinoscopy or an automated refractor may also be used to measure the refractive error in the individual’s eye.
  • A tonometry test will be performed to check your eye pressure.

If necessary, the doctor may suggest a few more tests to rule out the possibility of other diseases that may cause blurry vision.

LASIK Eye Surgery

  • First, the eye is sedated with anesthetic eye drops. Once the anesthesia takes its effect, the doctor uses an instrument, lid speculum, that keeps the eye open to position it under the laser beam.
  • With the help of a suction ring and an ink marker, any kind of eye or cornea movement is restricted.
  • Followed by this, the surgeon passes the laser beam through the eye that reshapes the cornea. Meanwhile, he/she checks the progress through a microscope. In order to rectify myopia, the cornea is flattened and to correct hypermetropia, the cornea is made steep.
  • Once the reshaping is complete, the cornea is placed back without any stitches and left to heal on its own.

The whole procedure takes 10-20 minutes to complete and is performed on an outpatient basis. After a quick follow-up by the doctor, the patient can go home on the same day.
