    Treatment

    Diagnosis Before Hip Replacement Surgery

Since the hip replacement is only performed in patients with severely degenerated hip joints, patients are usually bedridden at this time. Before hip replacement, the orthopedic surgeon has to determine the extent of joint damage and degeneration. For this, imaging tests such as X-rays and MRIs are performed. Contrast CT scans also help in assessing the degree of muscle, ligament, and tendon damage in the area. With the help of images from all these diagnostic tests, the surgeon makes the final treatment plan and decides whether the patient needs a partial or total hip replacement.

    Procedure for Hip Replacement Surgery

An anesthetist will sedate you by giving general anesthesia in order to prep the body for hip replacement surgery. Later, the orthopedic surgeon will make a few incisions to proceed with the surgery. S/he may insert an arthroscope through one of the incisions and surgical tools from the other to access the affected hip joint. The surgeon will then replace the damaged hip joint with an artificial implant to restore the normal function of the specific body part. Once the surgery is complete, the surgeon makes sure the implant is positioned properly and seals the incisions with stitches. When the incisions are closed, the surgeon puts a bandage to secure the surgical site for recovery.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is hip replacement surgery painful?

No, hip replacement is performed under general anesthesia so the patient does not feel any pain during the surgery. During the recovery, the patient may have a little pain and discomfort, but that is usually managed through medications and physiotherapy.

How long does it take to recover post hip replacement surgery?

Most patients can start walking on the same day after their surgery. Their physiotherapy often also begins within the first week of the surgery. Most patients can resume activities like climbing stairs, long walks, bending, etc. within 6 weeks of the surgery, however, they should avoid sports and high-impact activities such as running and jumping for at least 3 to 6 months.

Are there any risks associated with hip replacement surgery?
