    Diagnosis and Treatment for Hernia

    Diagnosis

To diagnose a hernia, the doctor will perform a physical examination to check the bulge. For an accurate diagnosis, the following tests will be recommended-

    • An abdominal ultrasound is done to get clear images of the abdomen and pelvic organ.
    • A CT scan is performed to find out if the herniated tissues are inflamed or swollen.
    • MRI scan is recommended to detect if the organ or tissues are strangulated or obstructed.
    • X-ray is done to get images of the abdomen and find the safest way to access and repair the hernia.

Each of the above-mentioned tests has significance. The results of these tests will help to determine the most suitable treatment method for a hernia.

    Surgery

Pristyn Care leverages the modern laparoscopic technique as well as conventional open surgery techniques to treat hernias in patients. Both methods are slightly different from each other.

    • Open Hernia Surgery– This is the conventional method where a large incision is made across the affected area. The protruding tissues are pushed back in the original place and the perforation in the abdominal wall is repaired. Either the healthy tissues are stitched together or a hernia mesh is placed over the hole to support the muscles and prevent the organ from protruding again.
    • Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery– This is the modern minimally invasive technique to repair a hernia. In the procedure, a laparoscope (which has a camera at one end) is used to look at the internal organs during the surgery. Generally, 2-3 small, keyhole-sized incisions are made across the abdomen to access the internal organs. The herniated tissues/organs are pushed back in the original place and the abdominal wall is reinforced with the help of a hernia mesh.

Thanks to the laparoscopic technique, hernia repair surgery is safer, quicker, and has little downtime. However, the laparoscopic technique may not be the best option for all patients. Thus, our doctors choose the most suitable technique according to the patients. To learn more about the treatment, you can book a free consultation with our hernia specialists.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair my hernia without surgery?

No, a hernia cannot repair or heal itself. Once the abdominal wall is perforated, you can take some measures to prevent the perforation from growing. The only effective treatment is surgery.

What is the cost of Hernia Surgery in Bangladesh?

The average cost of a hernia surgery in Bangladesh is relatively more affordable as compared to other countries across the globe with prices ranging from ৳ 90,000 to ৳ 100,000. It is to be kept in mind, however, that the exact cost of a hernia surgery will depend on multiple factors like method of surgery, severity of symptoms, city you undergo surgery and hospital of choice.

How can I permanently cure a hernia?

Only surgery can repair a hernia. Natural remedies, home treatment methods, painkillers, trusses, etc., can only help to manage the pain but won’t resolve the problem.

Which technique is best for hernia repair?

Typically, the laparoscopic technique is best for repairing hernia in most patients. However, in some cases, the doctor may prefer open surgery for some reasons.

Is hernia mesh always used to repair the abdominal wall?

No, in some cases, the abdominal wall can be repaired without using a mesh. If hernia surgery is performed without using mesh, it is called herniorrhaphy. If a mesh is used, the surgery is called hernioplasty.

    Can a hernia cause death?

A hernia can be life-threatening or cause death if the incarcerated organ’s blood supply is cut off and it gets strangulated. This will lead to the death of the affected tissues, which can spread and put a risk on your life if not treated immediately.

    Is hernia surgery painful?

No, hernia surgery is not painful at all. Anesthesia is given to the patient to numb the body and put him/her to sleep. Thus, there is no pain or discomfort during the procedure. However, you may feel slight discomfort after the procedure, for which the doctor will prescribe pain medications.

How long is recovery from hernia surgery?

The average recovery time after hernia surgery is 2-3 weeks. If open surgery is performed, the duration may be more than 3 weeks. However, if laparoscopic repair is performed, the recovery will be faster and you will be able to go back to your regular life within 2 weeks.

Get Advanced Hernia Treatment in Bangladesh at Pristyn Care

The most effective method to treat hernia is surgical repair. At Pristyn Care, we provide advanced laparoscopic and conventional treatment for hernias. In most cases, both patients and doctors prefer the laparoscopic technique as it is minimally invasive and provides better results. However, laparoscopic hernia surgery may not be the right option for every patient. Therefore, our doctors diagnose the patient thoroughly and then recommend the most suitable treatment.

What are the different types of hernia treated at Pristyn Care?

At Pristyn Care, we provide treatment for all types of hernias through open or laparoscopic techniques. The most common types of hernia are-

    • Inguinal hernia– It occurs in the upper part of the thigh or groin. Around 75% of hernia cases are related to the inguinal canal. This type of hernia is more common in men as compared to women, as the testicles are descended through the inguinal canal.
    • Femoral hernia– This type of hernia arises right below the groin crease. It is more common in women and occurs when the muscles are weakened due to the results of pregnancy and childbirth. This type of hernia can lead to complications very quickly. That’s why it is usually treated right after diagnosis.
    • Umbilical hernia– This occurs when the intestine starts pushing through the umbilical opening. They are most common in infants, young children, and women. In children, umbilical hernia usually resolves on its own. However, in adults, surgical repair is required to treat the condition.
    • Hiatal hernia– It occurs when the stomach tissue protrudes from the diaphragm into the chest cavity. It is common in people aged above 50. This type of hernia causes heartburn, abdominal discomfort, and difficulty in swallowing foods and drinks.
    • Ventral hernia– This arises as a result of a bulge or tears in the ventral surface. They are also called incisional hernias, as they are most common in people who have had abdominal surgery in the past.

Apart from these types, there are other types of hernia that are less common but all require surgery for treatment.

How to prevent the recurrence of hernia after surgery?

The chances of recurrence after laparoscopic hernia treatment are almost negligible. This is so because only small keyhole-sized incisions are made during the procedure, which doesn’t affect the integrity of the abdominal muscle wall. Still, most hernia specialists ask the patients to follow the tips below to prevent hernia recurrence-

    • Avoid constipation by taking a fiber-rich diet
    • Don’t let your cough become chronic
    • Avoid strain during urination or bowel movements
    • Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly to strengthen the muscles
    • Do not engage in activities that are strenuous and put excessive pressure on the muscles
    • Lift weight by using the feet, not the back muscles

By following the doctor’s advice, you will be able to live a healthy life.
