About Brig. Gen. Prof. Dr. MD Tanvirul Islam

Brigadier General(Retd.) Professor Dr. MD Tanvirul Islam is a distinguished surgeon with 32 years of extensive experience in the medical field. He is currently serving as the Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at Universal Medi ... cal College Hospital, Dhaka, since August 2022. His expertise lies in both general and colorectal surgery, with a significant focus on advancing surgical techniques and patient care.

Prior to his current role, he was the Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery at the Armed Forces Medical College, Dhaka, from March 2020 to June 2022, and served as a Colon & Rectal Surgeon at CMH Dhaka. From August 2011 to March 2020, he led the Colorectal Surgery division at the Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka, where he made notable contributions to the field. He has international training experience, having completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the National University Hospital, Singapore, from August 2010 to July 2011. His extensive career includes serving as a general surgeon at multiple military hospitals across Bangladesh, including the Combined Military Hospitals in Dhaka, Jashore, and Cumilla, as well as the Bangladesh Naval Ship Patenga in Chattogram. He also served as a general surgeon at a UN level-II hospital during the United Nations Mission in Liberia from November 2004 to January 2006.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Tanvir is actively involved in teaching medical students. He serves as a Clinical Tutor for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at Armed Forces Medical College, Dhaka, and Armed Forces Medical Institute, Dhaka. As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Armed Forces Medical College, Bangladesh, he contributes to the dissemination of medical research.

Educationally, he holds an MBBS from Sir Salimullah Medical College, University of Dhaka, obtained in 1989. He further advanced his surgical expertise by earning an FCPS (Fellowship in Surgery) from the Bangladesh College of Physicians & Surgeons (BCPS) in July 2003. His fellowship training in colorectal surgery at the National University Hospital in Singapore in 2011 has further solidified his specialization in this field. He began his medical career as a Medical Officer in the Bangladesh Army, followed by completing his internship in surgery and medicine at Mitford Hospital, Bangladesh, in 1991. His comprehensive experience, advanced training, and leadership roles have established him as a highly respected figure in the medical community.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tanvir has undertaken various other courses and training programs to augment his skills and knowledge. Notably, he completed a Grading Course in Surgery at Armed Forces Medical Institute, a Post Fellowship Training in Colorectal Surgery at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), and GI Oncology surgery training at TATA Memorial Center in Kolkata, India.
