Stapedectomy is usually only performed for severe cases of otosclerosis, and thus, the treatment is generally covered under most health insurance policies. However, the extent of the coverage depends on the terms of the policy.
Generally 3-4 postoperative consultations are necessary after a stapedectomy. The first consultation occurs within a couple of days of the surgery to ensure there are no postoperative complications. The second one happens around 1-2 weeks after the surgery, during which the surgeon takes out the packing, and assesses the patient’s hearing and recovery.
Cost of hospitalization during a stapedectomy generally includes the hospital room rent, cost of operation theater, anesthesia and anesthetist’s fees, etc.
Most patients start recovering their hearing ability within a week of the surgery and about 90% of the patients experience permanent improvement in their hearing after the surgery.
Generally, stapedectomy is performed under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation to minimize the surgical trauma for the patient.
