Piles, as we know, are the bulge or swollen veins in the anus or area around the rectum. It forms as a result of straining, inclination towards spicy food, fast food, sedentary lifestyle, lifting of heavy objects in wrong way, pregnancy in women and last but not the least- constipation. These are reasons for forming lumps in your anal region which bleeds a lot while passing stool.

Story
Rekha, a 48-year-old company secretary who lives in New Delhi with her daughter and husband, had been suffering from the problem of piles on and off since her teenage. And it is proven that cases of piles are more common in metro cities than villages and small towns. Due to faulty eating habits, cut-throat competition and stressful professional life, people tend to face the problem of piles quite earlier than the common age slot. Usually, after the 40s, people suffer from piles and fissure problems. But due to the present lifestyle, anyone can be prone to this.
Rekha's dietary habits were also conducive to the formation of piles. Due to long working hours and stress at work, she could seldom spare time to get some healthy lunch or breakfast from home. All she relied on was junk food or canteen food at the workplace. The food intake was devoid of high fiber, seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits. It was all about the junk and aerated drinks which Rekha was not able to keep at bay. Hence, the problem got bigger in no time and she started observing random bleeding from her back passage with extreme pain. She couldn't hold herself up from screaming loud while being on the toilet seat. That was the intensity of the pain. (Also read: Food to avoid during piles)
Rekha thought that her symptoms are merely the mild piles' symptoms that have flared up and will get better once she resorts to medicines and changes her diet strictly. She started putting ointment without any miss after every bowel movement. Also, she started eating fibrous food and made a point to have plenty of water to stay hydrated and have a regulated smooth bowel movement. (Also read: Vegan diet and hemorrhoids)
The problem of piles got worse when the doubt of bowel cancer hit everyone’s mind. That was when everyone could not avoid the rectal bleeding for just a symptom of piles. Because she took the utmost care of her diet and medication lately, the symptoms diminished or became very light until she experienced heavy bleeding at 4 AM suddenly one day.
Rekha was rushed to the hospital. ‘I never saw myself losing that much blood suddenly indicated by the piles. Earlier I had no major symptom that made me think of any other major reason for rectal bleeding other than piles. But this scared me.’ she said sobbing.
The doctor immediately found out that it was only a severe case of piles, not any cancer. The anal veins were in a big lump that needed to be treated immediately.
The surgeon inserted a flexible tube with a camera inside the back passage for diagnosing the status.
Rekha then agreed upon having a laser surgery which is less invasive and was done in a few minutes. Laser surgery for piles is advanced medical procedure where the patient doesn't need to have long hospital stays. It involves laser energy that is precisely directed towards the focused area and you get rid of piles. Rekha was beyond elated after the surgery as she couldn’t believe that it was such a simple yet effective procedure.
Patient's words:
“I blame my embarrassment that did not let me discuss my rectal bleeding problem openly. It could have been curbed and cured way before if it did not consider these dangerous symptoms as just mild symptoms of piles. But, I believe there is nothing like too late. I am happy with such an effective and minimally-invasive piles treatment involving least pain and bleeding’ said Rekha in astonishment.
Thereafter, Rekha followed the prescribed diet and an active lifestyle to keep a proper check on her age-old problem of piles. She started having high fiber foods, more fluids and stool softeners or bulking agents to avoid constipation at any cost. Today, with God’s grace, right treatment and aftercare regime, Rekha is now living a happy life without any trace of recurrence. What's your story?
