Thuthi plant has heart-shaped leaves with sharp ends and small yellow flowers. The plant grows up to 2 meters in height and is a perennial shrub. Thuthi leaves are believed to have enormous medicinal values.

Thuthi is largely grown near the seashore and along the roadsides. It grows up to 2 to 3 feet only and is of 29 different varieties out of which ‘paniyara thuthi’ is the one which is most commonly used. It grows in hot temperate regions of India. The plant is found in Southern India, Sri Lanka, tropical regions of America, and Malaysia.

According to Ayurveda, frequent consumption of food high in sour and hot taste (foods which contain excessive amounts of chillies, tamarind, etc) produces gas in the intestines and can cause piles or hemorrhoids. How to Use Thuthi Leaf for Piles

  • Method 1: 

Take 2-3 leaves and add little water to make a paste. Mix this paste with buttermilk. Consume this mixture for 2-3 days on an empty stomach. This helps in subsiding the pain caused due to piles and even lessen the bleeding. 

  • Method 2

Warm Thuthi leaves in castor oil and put it over the affected area where you have swelling or inflammation. It will give relief from pain and swelling due to piles. 

  • Method 3

To treat irritation in the anal region and cure constipation, boil Thuthi leaves in little water and add milk and brown sugar to see the results.

  • Method 4

Thuthi keerai kootu: Take small onion 100 gm, boiled toor dal 3 tablespoon, pepper powder  ½ tablespoon, cumin 1 tablespoon and gingelly oil 3 tablespoon. Now, cut the thuthi leaf and small onions into small pieces. Pour gingelly oil in a pan and put in the cumin. Then, fry the cut thuthi keerai and onion. Pour some water and heat the mixture till it starts changing color. Add toor dal and pepper powder and salt to taste. Thuthi keerai kootu is ready to eat with rice and a little bit of ghee. It is believed that all the problems related to piles will be cured with this recipe.

Blood vomiting can be cured with the juice of thuthi leaves and sugar.

Crush the leaves and mix the crushed leaves with tamarind. Apply it on the external wounds for quick healing.

  • Decoction 

Take 100 ml of water and add the root about 15gm. Boil it till the water evaporates and becomes about 50 ml. Strain the mixture and drink after it cools. You can also use Thuthi leaf powder for piles. You can use honey or pepper to add flavor. This decoction acts as an anti-inflammatory analgesic.
