What are the Different Types of Varicocele surgery?
Normally, a varicocele goes undetected for a long time. It is usually found when a completely asymptomatic man is being evaluated for infertility. Other than that, varicocele is detected when a mass in the scrotum is identified during a routine exam or a man himself visits a doctor for scrotal pain.
For varicocele surgery, an individualized approach is used based on its size, the patient’s fertility goals, symptoms present, and the results of semen analysis. Depending on these factors, any of the following methods may be used to repair a varicocele:
- Open Varicocelectomy
It is the traditional procedure for the treatment of varicocele performed by making an incision in the groin region or the abdomen. The malfunctioning vein is tied off and the blood flow is rerouted to the other healthier veins. It is the least safe and least expensive method for varicocele surgery. It costs around Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000 approximately.
- Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy
This surgical procedure is performed with the help of a laparoscope that provides a clear image of the blood vessels and other internal organs. It is also known as laparoscopic varicocele ligation. Multiple incisions are made around the abdominal area through which the laparoscope and surgical instruments are inserted. The vein is ligated directly from the abdomen for accurate results.
Though there is a risk that a hydrocele may develop after surgery, it is much safer than open varicocelectomy. That’s why laparoscopic surgery costs slightly more than open surgery, i.e., around Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 65,000 approximately.
- Microscopic Varicocelectomy
It is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows the doctor to treat varicocele through an incision that is smaller than a keyhole. The incision is made around the abdomen or scrotum and a microscope is used to identify the swollen, enlarged, and twisted vein. Then the vein is ligated properly without damaging the other blood vessels. It is one of the safest techniques for varicocele surgery and that’s why it costs more than other surgical procedures. The average cost of microscopic varicocele surgery ranges from Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 70,000 approx.
- Varicocele Embolization
Embolization is considered a non-invasive treatment method for varicocele. It involves using small coils that are inserted in the vein through the groin region to block the veins that are causing varicocele. It can be done without making an incision with the help of a catheter and imaging guidance. This method is preferred for children and in patients who have previously had varicocele surgery but the results didn’t last. As it is a non-invasive treatment for varicocele, it can cost a lot. On average, embolization may cost around Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 1,60,000.
Whether it is the success rate, invasiveness, or complications, every aspect of these treatment methods differs from each other. Due to these factors, the cost of each method also varies significantly.
Is Varicocele surgery Covered Under Insurance?
Fortunately, several insurance providers cover all expenses that incur during varicocele surgery whether it is done for infertility treatment or due to some other reasons.
However, some insurance companies limit the coverage of varicocele surgery when it is done to treat infertility. Therefore, it will be best to consult the insurance provider before filing a claim. They will provide you with an insight on whether the treatment will be covered under health insurance or not.
