What is the Difference between an Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, and Optician?

People often get confused about consulting the right eye care professional to treat various eye disorders. Three types of eye care professionals handle different aspects of ophthalmology treatments and have different levels of training and expertise.

    Ophthalmologists

An ophthalmologist is a surgeon who specializes in all medical services related to the eyes. They can:

    • Diagnose and treat all eye conditions
    • Perform eye surgeries
    • Conduct scientific research to identify causes and cures for different eye conditions and vision problems

Though ophthalmologists are specialized medical surgeons, they can also choose a subspecialty like a cornea, retina, neurology, glaucoma, etc.

    Optometrist

They are the doctors who provide primary eye care. They are certified and trained in optometry that involves a wide range of eye care services, such as:

    • Conducting eye exams and vision tests
    • Prescribing corrective lenses
    • Diagnosing medical conditions
    • Prescribing medicines for the treatment of certain eye disorders

An optometrist is not certified to provide surgical treatment for any eye disease.

    Optician

An optician is a trained technician (not a doctor) certified and trained to design and fit visual aids like eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other devices that can help correct the patient’s eyesight.

They use prescriptions from an optometrist or an ophthalmologist to verify and fit the visual aids. But they do not have the necessary training to diagnose or treat eye conditions.

When Should You See an Ophthalmologist?

People usually see an ophthalmologist for the following reasons-

    • Loss of vision or reduced vision in one or both eyes
    • Sudden spots or flashes of light in the vision field
    • Seeing lightning streaks, distortion, or wavy lines
    • Having watery eyes and redness in one or both eyes
    • Halos around the light and double vision
    • Inability to see colors
    • Pain in the eye

Besides the above-mentioned factors, you should also see an eye doctor if there are some physical changes in the eyes, such as crossed eyes, growth over the sclera and the cornea, etc.

Many people see an eye doctor on a regular basis, monthly, quarterly, or annually, to ensure their eye health is optimal.

How Often Should I Get An Eye Exam?

Eye health is affected considerably by age. Thus, the frequency of eye examinations is different for people of different age groups, as given below-

    • Children below 12 should get their eyes checked once every 2-3 years.
    • Children above 12 (teenagers) and below 19 should get their eyes once every two years or more frequently if they have a refractive power.
    • Adults between 20 to 40 should get their eyes examined at least once per year if they have a condition. If not, they can keep the frequency of visits to once every two years.
    • Adults above 40 should get their eyes checked at least once every year as eye health declines significantly at this age.
    • Adults over 65 should get their eyes examined twice every year.

Many people develop eye disorders but often don’t develop clear symptoms, which allows the condition to progress to an advanced stage. The eye exam helps to identify these conditions at the earliest so that the best treatment option can be given to the patient.

Ophthalmic Treatment Provided by Pristyn Care

At Pristyn Care, we provide comprehensive eye care to patients. You can get advanced care for the following conditions under the care of our eye doctors-

    • Cataract– A cataract is the clouding of the natural eye lens, which prevents light from reaching the retina, resulting in vision loss. We leverage the modern techniques of phacoemulsification, micro-incision cataract surgery (MICS), and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) to help preserve vision.
    • Refractive Errors- Unlike cataracts which mainly affect the elderly, refractive errors can occur in people of all age groups. Whether it is myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism, we leverage modern laser technology to correct refractive errors. Patients with refractive errors can undergo LASIK, SBK, PRK, SMILE, Contoura Vision, and ICL surgery (or IPCL Surgery) to restore their vision.
    • Diabetic Retinopathy- As the name suggests, this condition arises as a diabetes-related complication and damages the blood vessels in the eye, which causes vitreous hemorrhage and retinal disorders. We use anti-VEGF injections, laser treatment, and vitrectomy to treat diabetic retinopathy and preserve vision.
    • Retinal Detachment The retinal tissues can get detached from the back eyewall, severing the connection between the retina and the optic nerve. Retinal detachment usually starts with a retinal tear and holes and continues to progress, eventually resulting in vision loss. Depending on its severity, we take the most suitable approach for retinal detachment treatment. The treatment options include photocoagulation, cryopexy, pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling, and vitrectomy.
    • Squint EyeAlso known as strabismus or crossed eyes, this is a condition in which both eyes cannot simultaneously focus on the same object. Eye muscle surgery is performed to correct this disorder.
    • Glaucoma– It is a condition that arises when the optic nerve is damaged due to irregular or abnormal eye pressure. Glaucoma can be treated using medications to relieve eye pressure, laser therapy, filtering surgery, drainage tubes, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery. We leverage the most suitable technique depending on the patient’s condition.
    • Pterygium– A pterygium is an abnormal growth over the conjunctiva, sclera, and cornea that may or may not affect vision. This disorder can cause cosmetic and medical concerns. We use the best technique amongst excision, auto-grafting, and amniotic membrane transplantation to remove the abnormal growth without affecting eye function.
    • Keratoconus– It is a progressive eye disorder in which the outer corneal layer starts to become cone-shaped and affects vision. To correct keratoconus, we use corneal collagen cross-linking (C3R), contact lenses, or corneal transplantation.

You can consult our eye doctors for other common disorders, such as pink eye, eye inflammation, redness in the eye, double vision, etc., and we will ensure that you get optimal care.

Tips to Choose the Best Eye Specialist Near You

While seeking treatment for eyes, people start with a google search- “eye specialist near me” and choose the doctor that comes in the top results. However, this may not be the most efficient way to choose an eye doctor. So, here we are mentioning some tips to help you choose the best ophthalmologist near you.

    • Ask Around- The first step is to ask your friends, family, and co-workers. Normally, people know at least one person who visits an eye doctor on a regular basis. Asking that person for help will narrow down your search.
    • Ask your Primary Care Provider or General Doctor- Talk to your primary care provider for a referral to an eye specialist in your area. They are likely to suggest a name that is reliable and trustworthy.
    • Search the internest for best Eye Specialists in your area- Once you have a few names on your list, start researching on the internet. Type “eye doctor near me” or “ophthalmologist near me” and see what results show up in your search.
    • Check reviews given by previous patients- Research the eye doctors that have made it to your list and look at the reviews given by the patients. You will be able to gain important information regarding the quality of care and the patient’s experience during the treatment.

You should also check which hospital the eye doctor is affiliated with and the hospital’s reputation. There are chances that the doctor’s reputation is good, but the care provided at the center is not up to par.

While making the decision, it is crucial to evaluate all your options carefully and have a consultation with the eye specialist before finally getting treatment under their care.
