  • What is Arthroscopic knee surgery?

“More than 4 million arthroscopic procedures  are performed each year worldwide.“

Arthroscopic knee surgery is usually performed to treat certain types of knee pain and to remove scar tissue or the damaged part of meniscus or cartilage. Several orthopedic surgical procedures such as ACL reconstruction, PCL reconstruction or meniscus surgery can be performed using the arthroscopic technique, utilizing small incisions instead of large ones and minimizing damage to the muscles and soft tissue. However, not every knee surgery can be performed using an arthroscope, as they need to be performed through direct visualization rather than through an arthroscope.

That being said, arthroscopy knee surgery has a high success rate of 90% and can help people return to sports and daily activities much sooner, with better results and functioning of the knee.

What is the procedure of arthroscopic knee surgery?

Arthroscopic knee surgery is a minor and minimally invasive surgical procedure and is typically completed in about an hour. During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia and the surgeon then makes 2 to 3 small incisions on the affected knee. The surgeon may use a pump to push saline solution into the area to be operated. The saline solution will expand the knee, making it easier for the surgeon to perform surgery on the knee joint. After that, the orthopedic surgeon will insert an arthroscope inside the knee joint to view and access the knee joint.

If the identified problem can be fixed with arthroscopy, the orthopedic surgeons will insert small tools through the arthroscope. After that, the incisions are closed.

Arthroscopic knee surgery is commonly an outpatient procedure, meaning that you will be able to go home the same day after your surgery. In some cases, overnight hospitalization might be recommended to the patient.

What to expect after knee arthroscopy?

After your knee arthroscopy, you will be taken to a recovery room to recover from the anesthesia. When your vitals stabilize, you will be taken to your hospital room. You may feel some pain in the affected joint, which is normal. If you have pain, tell your doctor or a member of the hospital staff, who will give you a painkiller. After a knee arthroscopy, most patients are able to leave the hospital on the day or the following morning. Before your discharge from the hospital, your orthopedic surgeon may prescribe medications and suggest an exercise plan, depending on the type of surgery you had.

    Recovery after Knee Arthroscopy Recovery

Knee arthroscopy is not a very invasive procedure. For most patients, the surgery is completed in less than an hour, but the surgical time for knee arthroscopy depends on the type of knee arthroscopy performed. Typically, patients are discharged the same day after knee arthroscopy.

You will be advised to use an ice pack on your knee to manage inflammation and minimize pain and swelling. At home, keep your operated leg elevated as much as possible and use ice packs regularly for a couple of days. Make sure to change your dressing as directed by your surgeon and visit your knee arthroscopy surgeon for a follow-up appointment, which will be several days after the surgery.

Your orthopedic surgeon may also suggest you an exercise regimen to do at home that will help with the recovery. For patients who had an ACL reconstruction, PCL or meniscus surgery, a physiotherapy program might be recommended. Physiotherapy after knee surgery can help regain normal knee function and full range of motion. These exercises will also help to strengthen your knee joint and muscles so that you can return to your routine and sports as soon as possible. With the proper care, knee arthroscopy surgery has remarkable outcomes and is usually very successful.

Returning to routine life after arthroscopic knee surgery

Your knee arthroscopy surgeon will let you know how long it is likely to take for you to recover completely and what activities you should avoid until you are feeling better.

Returning to regular life will also depend on your age, the type of surgery you had and how quickly you recover. You will be advised to stay off strenuous physical activities, sports and heavy lifting for about 6 weeks after the surgery and will probably need 1 to 2 weeks off work, but this time usually varies from person to person and the type of knee surgery he or she is having. You will be permitted to drive when you have stopped experiencing pain and taking pain and have enough strength to drive safely and make an emergency stop, if needed. Be sure to get your orthopedic surgeon’s approval before resuming activities you are asked to avoid.

Frequently Asked Questions about ACL Surgery

Is ACL surgery covered under insurance?

Yes. Severe ACL tears, especially if they are accompanied by supplementary injuries to the surrounding tissues, do not heal without surgery and can cause further health issues such as knee osteoarthritis. Thus, most insurance providers cover ACL surgery.

How long does it take to recover from ACL surgery?

The recovery period for ACL surgery usually ranges between 3-8 months, depending on the severity of the tear, the type of treatment, patient’s health condition, etc. The timeline for when you can return to physical activities is given below:

    • 3-6 weeks: biking and similar activities
    • 10-12 weeks: treadmill running
    • 3-4 months: outdoor running
    • 6-8 months: full, unlimited pivoting sports

Which graft is best for ACL reconstruction surgery?

Most orthopedic surgeons prefer the patellar-tendon graft as it is considered to be the gold standard for ACL surgery. However, the choice for the graft often depends on a variety of factors such as the patient’s age, cause of ACL tear, their profession, etc. For athletes, usually, hamstring grafts are used for athletes while cadaver grafts are preferred for older patients.

How long after the ACL tear surgery should the patient start physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy should be started as soon as possible after the surgery to help regain joint motion and strength as soon as possible. Patients are recommended to start walking on the day after the surgery to aid recovery.

Can a torn ACL heal itself without surgery?

Mild ACL tears can mend on their own with proper rest and physiotherapy, however, a fully torn ACL cannot heal on its own. For severe ACL tears, reconstruction surgery is the only effective treatment to protect joint function in the long term.
