What is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is another name for minimally invasive orthopedic surgery. Generally, during a traditional open orthopedic surgery, the surgeon makes a large 3-4 cm incision  and cuts the muscles and other soft tissues to perform the surgery. This causes operative injury to the surrounding tissues and prolongs the recovery period.

In contrast, during arthroscopic surgery, the surgeon makes 2-3 tiny incisions to insert an arthroscope and operative instruments. The arthroscope is a long thin tube with an attached camera and light attached at the end, which helps the surgeon visualize the inner structure and bone tissues to help avoid operative injury to the surrounding tissues.

Some other benefits of arthroscopic surgery are:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Minimal soft tissue trauma
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Faster healing time
  • Lower infection rate
  • Fewer chances of postoperative complications
  • Reduced hospitalization time, etc.

Factors that affect the cost of arthroscopy in India

If you are considering getting arthroscopic surgery, you should consider the following factors while calculating the cost of the surgery:

  • Type and severity of the injury: The cost of the surgery will vary depending on the type and severity of the injury. For instance, both meniscus surgery and ACL reconstruction surgery are performed as knee arthroscopy but are performed differently.
  • Surgeon’s fees: The surgeon’s consultation and operative fees depend on their qualifications, experience, expertise level, etc. Generally, a more expert and experienced surgeon has a higher chance of performing the procedure successfully.
  • Patient’s age, gender, and health condition: The cost of arthroscopy also depends on the patient and their overall health condition. A healthy patient with a sound immune system will recover sooner and have much better results compared to an unhealthy patient.
  • Diagnostic tests required: There are a variety of diagnostic tests that help identify the cause and severity of the condition and help plan the treatment effect for complete success. Common diagnostic tests for arthroscopy are:
    • X-ray: Rs. 250 – Rs. 1000
    • Ultrasound: Rs. 800 – Rs. 1600
    • MRI: Rs. 5000 – Rs. 15000
    • CT scan: Rs. 2000 – Rs. 4000
  • Hospitalization fees: The overall cost of hospitalization depends on the choice of hospital, duration of the hospital stay, type of hospital room, anesthesia cost and anesthetist fees, etc. Make sure your chosen hospital has positive patient reviews to ensure a good surgical experience.
  • Cost of postoperative care and followup treatment required: Most patients need physiotherapy, assistive devices, rest, etc., after the surgery to ensure complete recovery of joint function and motion. The type and duration of the physiotherapy will depend on the joint being operated on, the patient’s requirement of joint motion, patient’s age, etc.
