In some cases, chronic middle ear infections don’t go away with the medications; instead, they can become worse, impact your daily routine, and may require surgery. Here are some surgeries that may be required to prevent ear infections become chronic:

1. Myringoplasty: The eardrum is improved with a graft patch to prevent infection from entering the ear during this procedure. It is recommended only when there is no infection in the mastoid bone. 
2. Bilateral myringotomy and tubes: A small tube is placed inside the eardrum to allow fluid to drain out. 
3. Tympanoplasty: It prevents ear infections and reduces the risk of hearing loss. During this procedure, the eardrum is repaired with a tissue obtained under the skin (fascia). In some cases, cartilage is also used to strengthen the eardrum. 
4. Mastoidectomy: It is the procedure of cleaning out the middle ear or mastoid bone. 
5. Canal wall down mastoidectomy: It is recommended for patients whose ear canal is destroyed with an ear infection. 

Treating chronic middle ear infections that last at least three months or that get worse and impact the daily routine of life may need surgical treatment. Various factors can cause ear infections, but bacteria usually set into bones are the primary cause. If any of the following surgery is needed, an ENT specialist (otologist/neurotologist) can determine the necessity of the surgery.

• Hospital Choice

More experienced surgeons tend to charge more than less experienced ones for surgery.

• The additional cost of complications, if there are any.
