  • What is hip replacement?

A hip replacement surgery, also called hip arthroplasty is a common yet major procedure during which an orthopedic surgeon replaces a damaged, diseased or worn out hip joint with an artificial implant. This surgery aims to restore the normal function of the hip joint and relieve chronic hip pain. Having a new hip with hip replacement surgery typically allows an individual to return to their normal activities and enjoy a pain-free life.

Though hip replacement surgery is commonly performed across the globe, it is still a major surgery that may involve a variety of risks. The risk of complications during the surgery or later in the recovery period can cause debilitating side-effects. That is why our orthopedic surgeons discuss the benefits, outcomes and risks of the surgery in detail prior to the procedure, so as to allow the patient to make a well-informed decision.

Most individuals who undergo  hip replacement surgery experience less pain, increased hip functioning and mobility, and a better quality of life.

    Procedure of hip replacement surgery

An orthopedic surgeon and a team of specialized doctors and nurses will perform your hip replacement surgery. The surgery may take 1 to 2 hours. You will receive general or spinal anesthesia so that you will be asleep during the surgery and will not feel any pain or discomfort. A doctor or nurse will carefully watch your vitals, like your blood pressure and  heart rate during the surgery.

Once you have been anesthetized, the orthopedic surgeon will make an incision over the side of the hip and will remove the damaged hip joint and replace it with an implant.

Most orthopedic surgeons use minimally invasive techniques to perform the surgery. During a minimally invasive hip replacement,1 or 2 small incisions are made, which helps avoid damage to the muscles, tendons and tissues surrounding the hip joint. Special surgical instruments are used to remove and replace the hip joint through a much smaller incision.

Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery is as safe and effective as traditional hip surgery and it also causes significantly less pain and downtime after the surgery.

What is minimally invasive hip replacement surgery?

Minimally invasive hip replacement surgery is an innovative, modern approach to remove and replace the hip joint using small incisions. The surgery aims to reduce the impact and trauma caused due to the surgery on healthy tissues, muscles and tendons. Our orthopaedic surgeons use minimally invasive surgical techniques with modern approaches and surgical instruments to access the hip joint and perform the procedure.

Usually, most patients who need hip replacement surgery are eligible to undergo the surgery with a minimally invasive approach. Based on your diagnosis, health condition and age, the orthopedic surgeon will suggest your approach for hip replacement might offer the best result.

Minimally invasive hip replacement allows the surgeon to access the hip joint using one or two small incisions by moving the muscles aside, without cutting them or making a large incision. Minimally invasive hip replacement has several advantages, such as-

    • Less invasive surgery with a much smaller incision
    • Lesser blood loss and reduced risk of need of blood transfusion
    • Lower chance of hip dislocation
    • Less postoperative pain and downtime
    • Quicker, easier and comfortable recovery
    • Shorter hospital stay and recovery period
    • Less limping
    • Lower risk of muscle damage

    Recovery after hip replacement surgery

Immediately after your surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room, where you will remain under a doctor’s observations until your vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure normalize. Most patients are able to walk on their own, or using walking aids the same day after the procedure. Rehabilitation begins right after the surgery, from the hospital itself. Your orthopedic surgeons will recommend you to walk while you are in the hospital and prior to your discharge, will prescribe medications for pain, to prevent infection and boost recovery. Hospitalization after minimally invasive hip replacement is usually 3 to 5 days and most patients return to their regular life in 3 to 4 weeks. Before your discharge, you will be referred to a physiotherapist who will help you restore maximum function and mobility after the surgery.

In the first year after your hip replacement surgery, you will have regular follow-up appointments with your orthopedic surgeon. During these visits, your orthopedic specialist will take an X-ray and discuss how you are feeling, your comfort level, mobility, and how the new hip is working for you. Your surgeon will also address any concerns you might have and will make sure you are healing well and progressing towards your recovery goals.

What factors can affect the hip replacement surgery cost?

The average cost of hip replacement surgery includes the costs of hospitalization and postoperative management. However, the cost of hip replacement may vary, depending on facts such as-

    • The type of implant used
    • Type of hip replacement, total or partial
    • General costs of hospital chosen for the procedure
    • General fee of the surgeon
    • Surgical approach used  (minimally invasive or traditional surgery)
    • Type of anesthesia administered
    • Your medical history
    • Comorbidities such as diabetes, liver or lung disease, etc
    • The city where you need to undergo the procedure

FAQs around Hip Replacement Surgery Cost

Is hip replacement procedure covered under insurance?

Most insurance policies cover treatments that are medically necessary. So, if your orthopedic doctor has indicated that you need surgery and conservative management is no longer enough to provide you relief from constant chronic hip pain, then your insurance policy will cover the treatment

Is recovery after hip replacement surgery expensive?

After a hip replacement procedure, most patients can be discharged in 1-3 days, depending on their health and recovery rate. Additionally, after the surgery, you may need at least 2-3 weeks of physiotherapy to help get used to your implant and to improve your range of motion post-surgery.

How long after the hip operation can I return to work?

If you have a desk job, you can return to work within 2 weeks of the surgery. However, if your job requires physical effort, you need to undergo more physiotherapy before returning to work. You can return to work within 2-6 weeks of the surgery.

How soon after the hip surgery will I be able to bend forward?

Patients are not recommended to bend forward further than 60-90 degrees for the first 6-12 weeks of the surgery. You can completely bend and perform regular hip functions after that (or sooner with your hip doctor/physiotherapist’s approval).

How long does a hip implant last?

With proper care and a healthy lifestyle, hip implants can easily last for 15-20 years without any degeneration.
