How Much Do Intraocular-Lens Cost in India?
The cost of Cataract lenses is not fixed. There are different types of lenses available for cataract treatment, and each of them has different characteristics, materials, and functions. Due to this, the cost of Intraocular Lens can fluctuate considerably. The key factors that determine the cost of IOLs are explained below-
- IOL Material– The intraocular lenses are commonly made of silicone, hydrophobic acrylic, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), etc. Each of these materials has different durability and flexibility that influence the cost.
- Lens Design- The IOLs can be rigid or foldable. The rigid lenses require slightly larger incisions to insert them, whereas foldable lenses can be inserted through a tiny incision. The complexity of the lens can increase or decrease the cost accordingly.
- Vision Correction- As we all know, the IOLs can address refractive power as well. The higher the power, the higher will be cost.
- Type of Lens- There are different types of lenses, i.e., monofocal, multifocal, toric, and monovision. Each of these lenses has different functions. Thus, the cost also varies considerably.

Types of IOL and Their Respective Cost
In most cataract patients, pseudophakic IOLs are used. Pseudophakic means that the artificial lens is substituted with the natural crystalline lens after cataract extraction. These lenses are-
-
Monofocal– These are the standard IOLs used in cataract surgery. They are used to address either optical infinity (myopia) or a fixed finite distance (hyperopia). These are the least expensive type of IOLs as their functionality is only limited to the correction of refractive error at only one distance. The cost range usually varies from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 50,000.
-
Multifocal– As the name suggests, these intraocular lenses address distant and near vision simultaneously. This type of lens has alternative distant and near focal points that allow the patient to get a clear vision at different ranges. These lenses are costlier than monofocal lenses due to additional functionality. It can vary from Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 90,000 approx.
-
Trifocal– The trifocal lenses are an advanced form of multifocal lenses that corrects intermediate vision as well. The cost of a trifocal lens is somewhat similar to a multifocal lens, i.e., Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 90,000 approx.
-
Toric– This type of lens is used to correct the cylindrical refractive power of the eye. Thus, these lenses are costlier than others. The standard toric lenses are monofocal. And they also come in a multifocal variant which can further increase the cost. The usual cost range of toric lenses is Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 70,000 approx.

- Indian Toric Monofocal IOL- Rs. 35,000
- Indian Toric Multifocal IOL- Rs. 60,000
- Imported Hydrophilic IOL- Rs. 22,000
- Imported Hydrophobic IOL- Rs. 28,000
- Imported Multifocal IOL- Rs. 50,000
- Trifocal IOL- Rs. 75,000
- Imported Toric Monofocal IOL- Rs. 40,000
- Imported Toric Multifocal IOL- Rs. 90,000
Does health insurance cover the cost of IOLs?
Health insurance policies only cover the cost of the standard intraocular lens (monofocal) used during cataract surgery. However, if premium IOLs are being used, the insurance policy won’t cover the expense of these IOLs. Hence, the cost of premium IOLs must be borne by the patient.
There may be different clauses in the insurance plans, such as co-pay, waiting period, sub-limit, etc., which can also impact the amount of sum insured the policyholder can claim. Therefore, it is advised to discuss the terms and conditions of the insurance policy with the agent.
