What is the cost of miscarriage treatment in India?
Miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion or pregnancy loss, is the natural loss of an embryo or fetus before it is able to survive/develop independently. Treatment before, during, or after miscarriage is called miscarriage treatment. The average cost of miscarriage treatment in India ranges between Rs. 15000 to Rs. 20000.
However, it’s not the final cost. Instead, several factors decide the overall cost of miscarriage treatment, such as the type of treatment, fee of the diagnostic tests, doctor’s experience, location and type of clinic, hospitalization, medications, follow-up meetings with the doctor, etc.
About Miscarriage Treatment
A miscarriage is a spontaneous event that results in the loss of a fetus before 20 weeks of pregnancy. A miscarriage is also known as spontaneous abortion. Miscarriage usually happens during the first trimester of pregnancy.
NIH reports the prevalence of miscarriage in Indian women as high as 32%. While the fetus expels by itself in a miscarriage, an ultrasound test and follow-up treatment is essential to ensure complete expulsion. Otherwise, incomplete miscarriage risks severe infections, consecutive miscarriages, permanent infertility, and life-threatening complications to the health of the mother.

What are the different types of miscarriage treatment?
Mainly there are three different types of miscarriage treatment, including expectant management, medical treatment, and surgical treatment.
Expectant Management – Expectant management is when you wait for the miscarriage to happen sooner with minimal bleeding and risk of complications under the strict supervision of your doctor. Unfortunately, approximately 50% of the patients will miscarry on their own within two weeks of a diagnosis of pregnancy demise in the first trimester.
However, the timing may vary from case to case and sometimes take up to 6-8 weeks for miscarriage to occur. Most women who choose expectant management will have a complete miscarriage on their own. Moreover, 1 in 4 will need an emergency dilation and curettage (D&C) – a surgical procedure to ensure all the pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus.
Medical Treatment – This treatment is considered the best when your miscarriage occurs in the first 28 weeks. This treatment involves prescribed medications and is successful in 80-90 percent of cases. The medications help open the cervix and pass the pregnancy tissue. Usually, this takes a few hours to start, and you may experience mild pain, bleeding, or clotting.
Medications are also prescribed to treat the post-miscarriage symptoms. You may need more than one dose of the medication. If you are less than 12 weeks pregnant, you may require follow-up meetings with your doctor. If you are more than 13 weeks pregnant, admission to the hospital may be necessary.
Surgical Treatment – This involves a surgical procedure called Dilation and Curettage (D&C). It is done under the influence of anesthesia. Here, the OB-GYN removes the entire pregnancy tissue from the uterus during the process. This option is available in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy as a pre-arranged scheduled procedure. You may be advised to undergo the surgical procedure if you are bleeding heavily and continuously.
What factors affect the cost of miscarriage treatment?
The treatment during or after miscarriage is to prevent heavy bleeding and infection. There are several treatment options for miscarriage, but the doctor chooses the best option for you based on the diagnostic tests.
- Type of Treatment
The kind of treatment option you need directly influences the overall cost of miscarriage treatment. The treatment for miscarriage contains the following:-
- Expectant management
- Medical management
- Surgical management (Dilation and curettage or ‘D&C’)
Understanding your treatment options can help you feel more in control. In addition, these treatment options are safe and don’t affect your future pregnancies. Your doctor will discuss each of these options to help determine the best option for you.
- Diagnostic Tests
Usually, the OB-GYN recommends pelvic ultrasound to confirm the type and duration of pregnancy. And detect whether miscarriage was complete or partial. The doctor also asks for blood and urine tests to detect other medical conditions to ensure no risk of complications during or after the surgical abortion. The costs of these tests also determine the final cost of miscarriage treatment.
- Doctor’s Experience
An obstetrician-gynecologist treats miscarriage. The doctor’s experience, reliability, and trustworthiness also affect the cost of miscarriage treatment. Usually, the fee of an experienced and reliable OB-GYN is higher than that of an inexperienced or less experienced OB-GYN. However, when it comes to miscarriage treatment, we recommend you consult only a more than 5-6 years+ experienced OB-GYN so that the risk of complications get canceled.
- Locations of Clinic
The MTP clinic’s location plays an important role in finalizing the overall cost of miscarriage treatment. Usually, the cost of miscarriage treatment at a clinic in Metro cities is higher than that of the small cities of India.
- Track Record of Clinic
Usually, the cost of a surgical abortion at a registered MTP clinic with good track records in surgical abortion is way higher than that of an ordinary MTP clinic. Apart from all the above, the OB-GYN prescribes certain medications to help the pain and avoid the risk of infection. The cost of these medicines also adds up to the final cost of miscarriage treatment. You may also need to do the follow-up meetings with your doctor; in that case, you may need to pay an extra fee for the follow-up visits to your doctor.

FAQs around Miscarriage Treatment
Which type of doctor treats miscarriage?
A gynecologist is the most ideal to perform D&C treatment post-miscarriage. A substantial experience of handling prior cases of miscarriage is even better.
Can women die during a miscarriage?
No. This is not very usual. However, if the bleeding is intense and uncontrollable, or the treatment remains improper, the eventual sepsis may risk severely high abdominal and pelvis pain.
How long should I wait before trying to become pregnant again?
The time period you should wait before planning your next pregnancy varies from case to case. It may be either a month/ 6 months or even a year depending on the exact cause of the miscarriage. It is best decided by your operating gynecologist.
What is the most common type of miscarriage?
Early miscarriage, that is, the miscarriage in the first 3 months of pregnancy is the most common type of miscarriage. About half of these are caused by hereditary or spontaneous chromosomal abnormalities in either or both of the parents.
Can the baby be saved in a miscarriage?
Yes. Though rare, but if you approach the gynecologist timely and the reports mark that the fetus is still viable, and the cervix is not dilated, there are favorable chances of saving the baby. In either of the cases, the best approach is above is best decided only by the operating gynecologist.
