What is myringoplasty?

Myringoplasty is a minimally invasive surgery performed to repair a ruptured eardrum. The middle ear has a thin, paper-like structure called the tympanic membrane, which is surrounded by the outer, bumpy part of the ear. It vibrates when sound waves are reflected.

There are several causes for eardrum rupture, such as sudden noises, head trauma, sharp objects hitting the eardrum, and ear infections. An effective treatment option for fixing a ruptured eardrum is myringoplasty, which prevents permanent hearing loss or vertigo mastoiditis (infection in the bone behind the ear). In unilateral myringoplasty, the procedure is performed only on one ear; in bilateral myringoplasty, it is performed on both ears.

Factors affecting the cost of myringoplasty treatment

Various factors affect  the final cost of myringoplasty treatment. Some of these factors are:

The severity of the condition:

The final cost of myringoplasty may vary for each individual, depending upon the severity of the condition. If the condition is chronic, then the cost of surgery may be high as compared to standard procedures.

Location:

The location of the treatment always affects the total cost of the surgery. Usually, treatments in metropolitan cities are higher than those in other cities or towns. Plus, treatment can vary from one metropolitan city to another.

Choice of hospital:

The choice of the hospital always plays a significant role in affecting the final cost of treatment. Treatment costs are generally high if the hospital is well-equipped and modern.

Surgeon’s fee:

It is common for surgeons with more experience to charge much more than those with less experience.

Additional charges due to complications:

Surgery costs can be high if complications arise during surgery. The surgeon may need to alter the procedure to cope with the complications.

Cost of diagnostic tests

To proceed with the procedure, your surgeon may recommend some diagnostic tests to examine the condition. The costs of diagnostic tests are also added to the final cost of the surgery. These tests include:

  • Urine Test: Rs. 100 to Rs. 500
  • Blood Test: Rs. 300 to Rs. 1000
  • X-Ray: Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the success rate of myringoplasty?

If repair of rupture is alone taken as the measure of the procedure’s success, then the success rate can be as high as 95%. The final success rate of myringoplasty depends upon the care after the procedure. Take care of your wounds and schedule frequent postoperative follow-ups for faster recovery

What is the difference between myringoplasty and tympanoplasty?

In myringoplasty, surgeons use a paper patch to repair the tympanic membrane (eardrum), whereas, in tympanoplasty, a small piece of tissue is used that is extracted from beneath the skin.

Can I put on headphones after the myringoplasty?

No. Avoid using headphones or earphones after the surgery for at least 2 weeks. It can cause pain, discomfort, infection, and even bleeding from the ear.

How long will it take to recover from myringoplasty?

Generally, complete recovery can  take anywhere between 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery. You can resume your regular routine within 3 to 4 weeks.

Can myringoplasty fail?

It is a rare condition when myringoplasty fails. Tinnitus, hearing loss, numbness to the upper half of the ear, occasional taste disturbance, and dry mouth are the symptoms of failed myringoplasty.
