What is parotidectomy?
Parotidectomy surgery is the surgical partial or total removal of the parotid gland. It is generally performed to treat chronic or severe parotid gland issues such as parotid cancer, chronic infection of the parotid gland, parotid gland cysts, parotid tumors, etc.
The amount of parotid gland tissue to be removed is decided based on the extent and location of the parotid gland issue. Depending on this, the surgery can be classified as either superficial or total. In some cases, where the patient has parotid gland cancer, which can metastasize, the surgeon generally removes neck lymph nodes attached to the gland as well.
