What is PRK LASIK?
PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is the predecessor of LASIK surgery which involves reshaping the cornea to improve vision. Unlike the conventional LASIK procedure, PRK involves removing the entire outer layer of the cornea, which will regenerate after the surgery. To ensure that the cornea doesn’t get damaged while the epithelium is healing, an artificial contact lens is placed over the eye.
It is an effective method to restore clear vision in patients at an affordable price. This method is preferred over LASIK for people who have thinner corneas and an active lifestyle. If you have poor vision due to myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism, PRK can be used to correct the refractive errors in the safest way possible.

Factors That Affect PRK Eye Surgery Cost
PRK is one of the least expensive types of refractive eye surgery. Still, the final cost of treatment can vary for each patient due to the following factors-
- Technology Used- PRK is performed using an excimer laser to ablate the corneal tissues. The technology is more commonly available and hence is less expensive than other techniques. Besides the equipment cost, the expense will also vary depending on which technique is being used to remove the corneal tissues.
- Choice of Hospital- The cost of surgery will be more affordable at a treatment center that has more patients. Though government medical facilities provide similar treatments and have higher numbers of patients, the quality of care is not up to par. At the same time, private facilities offer treatment at a slightly higher cost, and the quality of care is optimal.
- Pre & Post-Operative Diagnostics- Many tests are performed before confirming that PRK is the right choice for the patients. The tests include a corneal thickness test, visual acuity test, retinal test, Pentacam test, eye pressure test, etc. Some of the tests are also performed after surgery to evaluate vision improvement and look for signs of complications.
- Doctor’s Fee- One of the major expenses of the treatment goes to the surgeon’s fee. A highly experienced surgeon is likely to charge more to carry out the procedure. And the years of practice will also ensure that the procedure is carried out with precision and deliver the desired results.
- Post-Surgery Care- After surgery, you will also have to cover other small expenses, including eye drops, medications, eye shield, protection cover, and follow-up consultations with the doctor to keep up with the vision recovery and overall eye health.
Is PRK Eye Surgery covered by health insurance?
PRK surgery is covered by health insurance policies for patients who have a refractive power equal to or above 7.5 Diopters. The reason behind this is that this degree of vision loss can have a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life. If a patient’s eye power is lower than this, he/she won’t be eligible to get coverage for PRK or any other types of vision correction surgery.
The amount of coverage you can get will vary depending on the policy you have, and the sum insured. So, make sure that you talk to your health insurance provider about the terms and conditions of the policy.
