Diagnosis of molar pregnancy in Delhi

The doctor suggests a few diagnostic tests to determine the best treatment for molar pregnancy:

• Blood test – This test is performed to check the level of hCG in the blood. Unlike normal pregnancy, the hCG level is much higher than normal in molar pregnancy. Routine blood tests during pregnancy can help in detecting molar pregnancy.
• Transvaginal ultrasound – This test is usually performed to get images of the uterus, fallopian tube, and the ovaries. This test helps identify abnormal structures or growths in your pelvic area.
• Urine test – The doctor, suggests this test to check the colour and composition of urine. This test also helps in identifying the level of hCG.  

Treatment of molar pregnancy in Delhi

Molar pregnancy involves the excessive growth of trophoblast cells. Any delay in treatment can lead to some serious complications, including a rare form of cancer. Molar pregnancy is treated either by medication or surgery, depending on the severity of the condition. 

Medication- In medication treatment, doctors suggest methotrexate. Methotrexate medicine helps in stopping the rapid growth of hydatidiform moles. Methotrexate is given as an injection in a single dose. If the first dose fails to end the pregnancy, then you may need a second dose. The doctor monitors the level of hCG before and after the procedure.

Avoid anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen and aspirin while taking methotrexate, as they can increase the risk of side effects of methotrexate.  

Surgical treatment- There are two types of surgical treatment for a molar pregnancy, D&C procedure and hysterectomy. Mostly, the D&C procedure is suggested to end molar pregnancy, while hysterectomy is suggested in most severe cases when there is a risk of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia.

• D&C procedure- This is performed under the influence of general anaesthesia. Doctor gives medicine to dilate the cervix, that it usually takes around 30-40 minutes. Once the dilation is complete, the surgeon inserts uses a suction device inserted inside the uterus to expel all the molar tissues from the uterine cavity. The D&C procedures is are usually done in a hospital or surgery centre.   
• Hysterectomy – It is usually suggested in most severe cases when molar pregnancy starts causing excessive bleeding from your womb or there is a high risk of gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN). Hysterectomy is performed in two ways- open cut incision and laparoscopy.
