About Umbilical hernia

Umbilical hernia refers to the protrusion or bulge in the intestine that occurs through the opening in your abdominal muscles near your belly button (navel). These are the second most common type of hernia. Umbilical hernias are very common in infants but they are quite prevalent in pregnant women too.

In children, the bulge may become apparent when the infant cries or coughs causing the belly button to protrude. Umbilical hernias in children usually close on their own in the first 2 years of life. However, in adults, umbilical hernias need surgical repair.

Diagnosis

Umbilical hernia can be diagnosed easily with the help of a physical examination. The doctor will feel the bulge or swelling around the belly button. In a baby, the bulge will be more noticeable when he/she cries.

During the diagnosis, the doctor will also identify if the hernia is reducible or not. Some tests may also be recommended to see if the umbilical hernia has become incarcerated. These tests include X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, or a CT scan.

The results from these tests will help the doctor determine the severity of the condition and the most appropriate treatment method.

Procedure

At Pristyn Care, our general surgeons prefer using the laparoscopic technique to repair an umbilical hernia. The surgery is performed in the following steps-

  • The patient is given general anesthesia to numb their body and to make sure that they are asleep during the procedure. This will prevent the patient from feeling anxious or worried during the procedure.
  • Small incisions are made in the abdominal region through which the laparoscope and surgical equipment are inserted.
  • The laparoscope provides clear images of the internal organs to help the surgeon find the hernia sac.
  • The intestine is pushed back in the right place and if needed, a hernia mesh is placed around the muscle wall to prevent the organ from protruding from the wall again.

Umbilical hernia repair surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so the patient will get discharged on the same day. The recovery will happen at home. Therefore, the doctor will provide a detailed plan to follow during this period that will promote faster healing.

Is laparoscopic surgery better than open surgery?

Although open and laparoscopic surgeries are safe treatments, the benefits of laparoscopic umbilical hernia surgery are much more than that of open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is better than open surgery for umbilical hernia repair because it offers a high recovery rate. Since blood loss is minimum, the patient can resume a normal routine within a week. Along with that, the surgical process is shorter in the case of laparoscopic surgery for umbilical hernia treatment.

Does an infant need to undergo umbilical hernia repair?

No, an infant does not necessarily need to undergo umbilical hernia surgery. Usually, the umbilical hernia in infants goes away on their own by the age of 1 to 2. Surgery for infants is done if –An umbilical hernia is immensely painfulThe size of a hernia is greater than 1-2cm in diameterThe size of the hernia remains unchanged over the first two years.Umbilical hernias do not disappear by the age of 5.Umbilical hernia becomes trapped or blocked in the intestine.

What are the complications if I do not undergo laparoscopic surgery for an umbilical hernia in time?

Umbilical hernias can get bigger in size and lead to complications. If a patient chooses to ignore the symptoms, the umbilical hernia can lead to incarcerations or strangulations. Either situation is considered an emergency and can cause life-threatening conditions. If your umbilical hernia strangulates, which can cause blood to stop flowing to the tissue leading to tissue death. This event may result in the rupture or death of an organ.

If your umbilical hernia leads to incarceration, that also becomes riskier to operate and complicated to operate than a regular umbilical hernia. If you avoid treatment in time, the duration of surgery increases with the risk of recurrence on the higher side too. You might experience intense pain in the abdomen followed by nausea and a feverish feeling. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms of an umbilical hernia.

Should I undergo hernia repair and Cesarean Section (C-Section) simultaneously?

If the umbilical hernia occurs mid-way during pregnancy, the doctors will look for any signs of strangulations and incarceration. If there are no complications and symptoms show no sign of major discomfort, the doctor can delay the repair surgery until your delivery. However, you can undergo hernia repair after the delivery depending on the diagnosis and choice of surgeon.

The chances of recurrence of umbilical hernia after the surgery becomes very minimal if the treatment is done using surgical mesh as compared to conventional sutures. Some patients may choose to undergo hernia repair after childbirth. Combined surgeries do not usually increase the risk of complications, however, there are other concerns such as the age, health of the patient, quality, and durability of the hernia repair.
