LASIK Eye Surgery

During the initial visit, the Eye Specialist or Ophthalmologist will ask you to describe the symptoms. To carry out a thorough diagnosis the doctor may carry out certain tests including:

  • Comprehensive eye examination
  • Refraction test
  • Visual acuity test
  • Pachymetry test
  • Corneal topography

Based on the readings of your tests, the doctor will begin the treatment after identifying you as an eligible candidate for the procedure. The procedure for correcting refractive errors will include the following steps:

  1. The Ophthalmologist or Eye Specialist will numb your eyes by using eye drops.
  2. The surgeon will then place a lid speculum to hold your eyelids open and a suction ring will also be placed to prevent your eyes from moving.
  3. The doctor then uses the microkeratome laser to create a flap in the cornea tissue.
  4. Then, the flap is left open to reshape the cornea using a programmed laser.
  5. The laser will remove the corneal tissues by cutting tiny portions of the cornea until its shape is fixed.
  6.  After achieving the ideal shape, the flap will be placed back in its original place and will be left to heal over time.

The treatment takes around 30 minutes, out of which, the preparation takes about 20 minutes and the surgery takes only about 10 minutes. Therefore, you can go back home on the same day itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which doctor should I consult for vision problems?

You should consult an ophthalmologist if you are experiencing blurry vision or you are having minor or major problems with your vision. Ophthalmologists are specialized doctors who can carry out both medical and surgical treatment of all kinds of eye diseases.

Can the results of a LASIK surgery last for a lifetime?

Yes. The results of a LASIK surgery can last for a long period of 10-20 years and in certain cases, they may even last for a lifetime. However, the longevity of the treatment depends on multiple factors, such as age, overall health and medical condition of the patient. This also largely depends on the amount of attention that the patient pays to their eye health.

Can I watch TV after undergoing LASIK eye surgery?

Yes. You can watch TV once you take a nap after undergoing a LASIK eye surgery. However, there are chances that the digital screens may cause irritation in your eyes. Therefore, it would be beneficial for you if you wait for a few days before watching TV or using other digital devices like phones, tabs, or computers after undergoing a LASIK surgery.

How long does it take to recover after a LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK surgery is performed in a day-care procedure. Hence, you will be able to return to performing all the basic daily activities on the same day itself. However, the doctor will advise you to take proper rest for the first few days, since it would take you around 2-4 weeks to completely heal from the procedure.

What is the cost of a LASIK surgery in Jaipur?

The cost of a LASIK eye surgery may range anywhere between Rs 30,000 to Rs 1,00,000. However, this cost should not be considered as an absolute and the range is provided just to give you a brief idea.

What are the factors that determine the cost of a LASIK surgery in Jaipur?

The cost of a LASIK surgery in Jaipur can vary depending on multiple factors such as:

  • Severity of the refractive error
  • Location and type of the hospital chosen to undergo the treatment
  • Consultation fee of the doctor
  • Cost of medications to be taken before and after the surgery
  • Amount to be paid for diagnostic tests before and after the surgery.

Is LASIK surgery painful and can the laser burn your eyes?

No, LASIK is not a painful procedure. Since the surgery will be performed after administration of anesthesia, it is very unlikely for you to feel pain. However, there might be a little bit of discomfort. During the entire procedure, the laser beam is actually controlled by a computerized machine. And, it shuts down on its own, as soon as it senses any eye movements. This ensures that no components of the eye are damaged during the procedure.

When should you see an eye doctor?

If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should consider visiting an eye specialist without making any further delays:

  • Frequent headachesIntense and consistent pain in the eyes
  • Problems in viewing near or distant objects
  • If your eyes are becoming sensitive to light
  • If you see flashes, spots or floaters in your field of vision
  • Itchy or dry eyes
  • Double vision in one or both eyes

Can everyone undergo a LASIK surgery?

No. Everyone cannot undergo a LASIK surgery. Only the eye specialist can confirm if you are a good candidate after a thorough evaluation of the eyes. An individual may not be considered as an ideal candidate for undergoing a LASIK surgery for the following reasons:

  • Serious eye diseaseLarge pupils or a thin cornea
  • Age-related eye problems
  • Severe nearsightedness
  • Fairly good overall vision

Is LASIK surgery safe?

Yes. Laser vision correction procedures, such as Bladeless Femto LASIK, Bladeless and Flapless ReLEx Smile LASIK, and other advanced innovations have made the surgery safer, faster, and precise.

What is Femto LASIK?

Femto LASIK, also known as femtosecond-assisted LASIK, is a type of laser eye surgery. It allows the surgeons to create a corneal flap with the laser rather than using a mechanical cutting tool. After surgery, the flap is placed back in its original position without sutures.

What are the common side effects of LASIK operation?

The common side effects of LASIK eye surgery are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare, halos, and double vision
  • Undercorrection and overcorrection
  • Astigmatism
  • Flap problems
  • Regression of vision
  • Vision loss or changes
  • Itchiness and soreness in the eye

How is contoura LASIK surgery different from conventional LASIK operation?

While the conventional LASIK surgery maps about 200 points in the cornea, the Contoura LASIK maps around 22,000 points on the cornea for more accuracy. Contoura LASIK also has fewer complications as compared to the conventional technique and the damage to the tissues is relatively less.

What is the difference between PRK and LASIK?

The key difference between PRK and LASIK is the creation of a flap in the cornea. While LASIK surgery requires a thin flap to reshape the cornea, PRK removes the outer layer of the cornea completely. In both scenarios, the flap grows back over time.

Is LASIK painful?

No. LASIK eye surgery is not painful at all. Before the procedure, the surgeon will place numbing eye drops in both your eyes and only proceed when the solution takes effect. You may still feel slight pressure during the surgery, but there will be no pain.

Can LASIK surgery damage your eyes?

LASIK surgery can cause dryness, flap problems, regression of the vision, and sudden vision changes/loss. However, these are temporary side effects of LASIK. The chances of LASIK permanently damaging your eyes or affecting the vision are rare.

What is the best age to undergo LASIK eye surgery?

Though LASIK surgery can be performed at any age group, doctors often recommend that the ideal age range for LASIK is between 25 to 40 years. This is because the eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions usually stabilize by the age of 25. And a stable prescription is the eligibility criteria for a LASIK candidate.

How can I contact the best LASIK doctors near me in Jaipur?

You can contact the best LASIK surgeons in Jaipur near you through Pristyn Care. You can either download our Consult Doctors application to book an appointment with the eye specialists personally. Or you can talk to our medical coordinators to schedule your appointment with the best LASIK doctors near you.

Is LASIK permanent?

LASIK is a long-lasting solution for blurry vision or refractive errors. It reshapes the cornea to reduce the eye power and gives a long-lasting effect. However, LASIK cannot prevent further changes in the cornea. You may notice minor changes in vision in the future due to your new eye power.

Is LASIK good for the eyes?

There is no doubt that LASIK surgery is good for the eyes as it helps to restore vision problems effectively. It is a minimally invasive treatment that takes around 15-20 minutes and gives around 10 years of freedom from spectacles and contact lenses.

Is LASIK the best option for eyeglass removal?

Yes. LASIK completely eliminates the dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses through a simple and minimally invasive procedure.

What is the success rate of LASIK?

The success rate, as well as the patient satisfaction rate of LASIK vision correction, is higher than 96%. It can help the patients to achieve 20/20 vision in most cases with minimal complications.

Which insurance companies provide coverage for LASIK eye correction?

  • Bajaj Allianz Health Insurance

Yes. The corneal thickness test is a very important test to determine the suitability of the person to undergo LASIK surgery. It is because the surgeon has to remove the corneal tissues to reshape the cornea and correct the refractive errors. If there are not sufficient corneal tissues, you won’t be eligible for LASIK operation.

When LASIK surgery is not advisable for the patient?

LASIK surgery is not advised to a patient if they have any of the following:

  • An eye disease that can cause the cornea to become thin and bulge out.
  • A fairly good overall vision
  • Severe nearsightedness
  • Large pupils and thin cornea
  • Age-related eye changes that cause vision to become dim
  • Participation in contact sports where they can get a direct blow to the face

In all these situations, the eye specialist will recommend an alternative treatment method to correct vision problems.

How to prepare for LASIK Eye Surgery?

  • If you are an eligible candidate for LASIK surgery, the eye specialist will advise you to follow the tips below and to take some precautions to ensure that there are no complications during the procedure and your eyes respond well to the treatment. These tips include:
  • Stop wearing the contact lenses before having LASIK. If you wear soft contacts, you’ll have to stop at least a week before the surgery. And if you wear hard contacts, you will have to stop wearing them at least a month before the procedure. This is important because wearing contact lenses can alter the shape of the cornea and affect the results.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothes as you’ll be undergoing surgery in those same clothes. It is important that you follow this advice and wear clothes that are appropriate to wear in the operating room as well.
  • Ask your friend or family member to drive you back from the surgery center. Though you won’t be asleep during the procedure, the anesthesia will still have some lingering effects. Therefore, it is not safe for you to drive yourself.
  • Avoid wearing any makeup, perfume, or lotions on the day of surgery as these products act like contaminants for the face.
  • Do tell your surgeon about your medical history and any medication you are allergic to. This may impact the outcome of the surgery and the precautions you’ll have to take after surgery.

Benefits of LASIK Eye Treatment

LASIK treatment has become a popular way to restore clear vision in patients over the years. This is because it has many aspects that are beneficial for the patients. The key benefits of the LASIK eye treatment are:

  • Improved Vision- The patient can achieve 20/20 vision or perfect eyesight after LASIK.
  • Safety- The latest advancements and innovations in laser vision correction procedures make the surgery safer and precise.
  • Faster Healing- Being a minimally invasive surgery, LASIK has less downtime for the patient and the healing is also quick.
  • Minimal Complications- There are very few complications of LASIK surgery and even those ones can be managed with certain medicines or precautionary steps.
  • Less Expensive- Compared to the amount of money you spend on contact lenses, frames, and contact solutions over the years can easily make up for the expenses of LASIK surgery. And you’ll save more money when your vision is clear and you no longer need visual aids
  • Additional Adjustments- Another great benefit of LASIK is that if needed, you can undergo the procedure again to further adjust your vision if it changes.

Due to all these advantages, people are becoming more inclined to LASIK and other latest forms of vision correction too.

What are the different types of LASIK surgery?

As there are different types of LASIK eye surgery available, patients often have a hard time determining which laser procedure is the best for the eyes. LASIK itself is a type of refractive surgery that is performed with the help of a laser. People have heard many names for LASIK, such as Femto LASIK, Contoura LASIK, Smile, etc.

However, you should understand that the primary difference between these types of surgeries is the type of laser used. It is either an excimer laser or a femtosecond laser that is used to carry out the procedure or the technique is slightly different.

But there are many other types of refractive surgeries that can help a person to correct vision problems. These different types of vision correction procedures are:

  • LASIK- It can help to treat myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. LASIK is one of the most popular refractive surgeries and comes under blade-less procedures as a laser is used to cut the corneal flap.
  • PRK- Photorefractive Keratectomy was the first technique that involved using lasers to correct vision problems. It can help to treat myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia but not hyperopia. The key difference between LASIK and PRK is that it is done by removing the outer layer of the cornea whereas, in LASIK, only a small flap is created and lifted to reshape the cornea.
  • ASA- Advanced Surface Ablation is similar to PRK but uses Zeiss excimer laser to ablate the cornea and reshape it to provide clear vision. It can treat myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia.
  • LASEK- Laser-Assisted Subepithelial Keratomileusis is also similar to PRK. But unlike PRK where the flap is created and removed, in LASEK, the flap is created and pushed to the side of the cornea where it remains attached to the eye. After surgery, the flap is repositioned and a bandage contact lens is placed on the eye to keep the flap in place as it heals. It can be helpful to treat myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia. But you should know that LASEK is not USFDA-approved.
  • EPI-LASIK- Used for correction of myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, EPI-LASIK is another variation of PRK. The flap of the outer layer of the cornea is created with the help of a special tool called an epithelial separator. It is also not approved by USFDA.
  • LBV- Laser Blended Vision is a technique that helps to correct presbyopia only. It treats the dominant eye for distant vision and the non-dominant eye for near vision. It is a US FDA-approved technique.
  • SMILE- SMILE stands for small incision lenticule extraction which is a new blade-free technique that uses a femtosecond laser to create a lenticule shape in the corneal tissue. The lenticule size and shape are adjusted to correct the refractive error of the patient. It is not approved by the FDA for myopia of less than 1 Diopter and neither for astigmatism or hyperopia. Therefore, it can only be used to treat high myopia.

Other than these techniques, there are other laser-based procedures that can correct refractive errors and treat other eye disorders like cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, etc.

Recovery & Post-Surgery Care After LASIK

You should understand that undergoing LASIK surgery is not enough to get the desired results and correct all the vision problems effectively. The most crucial thing is the recovery period. In the first few days, your eyes will itch, feel gritty, burn, or become watery. Your vision may also take 24-48 hours to stabilize. And the corneal flap will take even longer to heal completely.

The complete recovery time after LASIK is around one month during which you’ll have to take many precautions and follow the doctor’s advice strictly. If you don’t follow the doctor’s instructions, there is a possibility that your final outcome of LASIK won’t be exactly what you hoped for.

Here are some common post-surgery care tips that will help you to recover quickly and get the best results from LASIK:

  • Do not touch or rub your eyes as it can cause irritation
  • Apply eye drops as directed by the doctor for faster healing and to reduce side effects like dry eyes.
  • Get the right eye protection device to keep dust, dirt, and even strong light away from the eyes.
  • Try to avoid direct sunlight and artificial light as well. Stay in the soft and dim light that soothes your eyes.
  • Avoid heavy exercises and all kinds of sports activities until your eyes heal properly.
  • Avoid soap for the first few days completely and don’t take showers or hot tub baths as well.
  • Give enough rest to your eyes and keep them away from the digital screen in the first week as much as possible.
  • Avoid wearing makeup, cream, or any other products with chemicals, including face wash.
  • Take follow-up with your eye doctor to monitor the eye’s recovery and to detect signs of potential complications.
