About Squint/Strabismus Surgery

Squint surgery is the procedure carried out for the treatment of squint, a condition in which the eyes don’t align properly. Also known as strabismus, squint eyes occur usually due to muscle dysfunction, farsightedness, brain problems, trauma to the eye, or infections. It exists in children and adults. In children, the condition often results in amblyopia or lazy eyes and loss of depth perception. If the onset occurs in adulthood, it results in double vision. There are six muscles attached to the eye surface that are responsible for eye movements. When any one of these six muscles is imbalanced, it results in squinting. Squint surgery focuses on balancing these muscles (strengthen or weaken) to allow proper eye movements in all directions. The surgery can be carried out on one or both eyes depending on the patient.

Squint Treatment

Diagnosis of of Squint or Strabismus

Before squint surgery, the ophthalmologist or eye doctor will use eye drops to dilate the pupils. Then, the Hirschberg Test or Hirschberg Corneal Reflex Test is performed to assess the eye muscles of a strabismus patient. The examination involves shining a light in the eye to observe where the light reflects from the corneas.&nbsp

  • If the corneas are well-aligned, the light reaches the center of the cornea. If it doesn&rsquo
  • t, the results will show whether the patient has exotropia, hypertropia, esotropia, or hypotropia. More than one type of strabismus can also occur in the patient.&nbsp
  • Squint Surgery Procedure&nbsp

  • In earlier stages, glasses or vision therapy is used to address squinting. If these treatments are not effective, squint surgery is recommended for the patient.&nbsp
  • The surgery is performed using general anesthesia and takes less than an hour. It is done on an outpatient basis where the patient is discharged on the same day. During the surgery-&nbsp
    • The eye/eyes are held open using a lid speculum. In some cases, it is important to operate on both eyes to align them properly.&nbsp
    • The surgeon detaches the eye muscle that is imbalanced and moves it to a new position so that both eyes point in the same direction.&nbsp
    • The reattachment of the muscles is done with dissolvable stitches.&nbsp

In some adults and teens, further adjustment of the eye muscles is required to correct the alignment.&nbsp

  • Benefits of Squint Eye Surgery&nbsp

  • Squint eye surgery can successfully treat the misalignment of the eyes in children and adults. The key benefits this surgery offers are-&nbsp
    • Improvement of Eye Position &amp
    • Appearance-&nbsp
    • As squint eyes are clearly visible and easily noticeable, many people feel self-conscious due to the condition. With surgical treatment, the eye muscles are strengthened/weakened to allow the eyes to be in a normal position and the appearance of the patient doesn&rsquo
    • t get compromised.&nbsp
    • Better Eye Coordination-&nbsp
    • In children, the brain eventually starts taking images from the eye that is properly aligned and ignores the image from the affected eye. In adults, this usually takes a very long time or doesn&rsquo
    • t happen at all. Thus, the eye coordination gets compromised and the patient cannot use both eyes together to achieve the binocular vision or 3D vision. The surgery addresses the eye coordination problem and allows the eyes to focus on the same object to create a 3D image.&nbsp
    • Improvement in Eye Movements-&nbsp
    • Due to the misaligned eye muscles, in many cases, squint eyes patients have reduced peripheral (side) vision. With surgical correction of the eye muscles, the movements improve, allowing the eye to see properly on the sides.&nbsp

    Eye Care After Squint Surgery&nbsp

  • Extensive eye care is required after squint eye surgery. Immediately after the operation, you will have an eye pad to cover the treated eye. The pad only needs to be kept over the treated eye or eyes for one-day maximum.&nbsp
  • Follow the instructions below-&nbsp
    • Painkillers are prescribed to the patient to manage the eye pain. It feels like grit or sand is stuck in the eye. Thus, medicines like paracetamol are prescribed.&nbsp
    • Redness in the eye lasts for a couple of months, during which you have to avoid poking the eye or rubbing it to make the condition worse.&nbsp
    • The stitches also cause itchiness in the eye that lasts for a few weeks until they dissolve. So, avoid touching or rubbing the eyes entirely.&nbsp
    • Eye drops are also prescribed for the patient that needs to be used for 2-4 weeks approx. to prevent eye infection.&nbsp
    • You can watch TV and read from the next day after surgery as long as you feel comfortable.&nbsp
    • Return to work or school only after one week or take longer if you don&rsquo
    • t feel ready.&nbsp
    • Avoid driving for 1-2 days and ensure that the double vision no longer exists before you drive.&nbsp
    • Try not to let soap or shampoo enter your eyes during bathing.&nbsp
    • Avoid swimming and contact sports entirely for 2 to 4 weeks.&nbsp
    • Do not use make-up products or any other chemical products that can cause irritation in the eyes.&nbsp

    Along with following the doctor&rsquo

  • s instructions for post-surgery care, you will also have to see the eye doctor again for follow-ups several times. The doctor will ensure that your eyes are healing well.&nbsp
  • At Pristyn Care, we also provide free post-surgery care and follow-up consultations to ensure that patients get all the help they need during recovery.&nbsp
