What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is a common condition in which the lining of the sinus becomes inflamed or swollen. Sinusitis is commonly known as a sinus infection. The sinus is an air-filled pocket located in between the eyes, nose, and behind the forehead or cheekbones.
They produce mucus to keep the nose moist, filter air, and protect against germs, dust, or allergens. Sometimes, germs grow on sinus cavities and cause an infection. Numerous conditions, including the common cold, allergic rhinitis, nasal polyps (small growths in the lining of the nose), a deviated septum, allergies, environmental smoke, etc., can result in sinusitis.
Sinus infection can be treated with medications or preventive steps at an initial stage. If the infection becomes chronic, surgery is the option to clear the blocked sinus. FESS is an advanced, minimally invasive procedure to treat severe sinus infections.

Diagnostic Tests

Your surgeon will recommend various pre-operative  tests to have a clear understanding of your sinus infection. Some of the common diagnostic tests are mentioned below:

Imaging tests: Your surgeon may recommend some imaging tests, such as CT Scan, and X-ray, to see the exact root cause of swelling, inflammation, and blockage.

Allergy test: An allergy can also be a leading cause of a sinus infection. In this case, an allergy test proves helpful in determining if it is responsible for your nasal blockage.

Nasal Endoscopy: Your surgeon will use a thin, flexible endoscopic fiber tool to detect the prime suspect of sinus infection such as nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, tumors etc.

Swab Test: In this case, the surgeon will take the nasal congestion discharge sample to determine whether it is a bacterial infection or viral.

Sinusitis Treatment- Medications or Self Care

The best treatment for sinusitis is always a combination of medication and self-care. Listed below are some medications that can provide sufficient relief at the beginning of your condition.

Antibiotics: When a bacteria-causing infection occurs, antibiotics can be taken. The antibiotics won’t work on viral infection.

Nasal Sprays: Use decongestant nasal sprays to open the blockage of sinus infections. Don’t use them frequently, excessive use of nasal sprays can reverse the effect and actually make your congestion worse.

Humidifier: Use a humidifier to keep the air moist and avoid air dryness to relieve nasal congestion.

Water Steam: Take water steam through the mouth or nose to relieve nasal swelling, pain and inflammation. It can ease congestion too.

Drink plenty of water: It can make your mucus thin and relieve congestion. Drink warm fluids like warm water, soup, green tea, honey or ginger tea, etc.

Sinusitis Treatment- Surgical Method

When the medications stop working and infections become chronic, then surgery is the last resort for sinusitis.

FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery): This is a minimally invasive procedure and usually takes around 1 to 3 hours to complete.

  • Your surgeon will give you anesthesia to sedate your nasal area.
  • Using an endoscopy, the surgeon will remove the infected bone, tissue, or polyps that may be blocking your sinus.
  • In some cases, a small rotating burr may be used to scrape the tissue out.
  • Your ENT surgeon will pack your nose with a bandage and cotton swab to absorb blood or discharge.
