Diagnostic Tests and Treatment
Initially, the treatment starts with aggressive medications, and when the medications and conservative methods fail to offer enough relief, surgical treatment is the last resort to treat ear infection. Â
Here are some pre-assessment tests that your surgeon may recommend before proceeding with the procedure:Â
Physical Examination: Your surgeon will visually examine your ear infection to determine if there is redness or swelling.Â
Pneumatic Otoscope: It is a specific tool that the surgeon uses to diagnose an ear infection.Â
The pneumatic otoscope enables the doctor to observe the eardrum in the ear and determine if there is fluid present. They typically observe movement as the doctor gently blows air against the eardrum. However, if there is fluid, there will be little to no movement of the eardrum.
Tympanometry: This is performed to check the movement of your eardrum.Â
Acoustic Reflectometry: This test evaluates the amount of sound reflected from the eardrum, which is an indirect way of assessing any liquid in the middle ear.Â
Tympanocentesis: This test involves the use of a small tube that penetrates the eardrum to drain fluid, allowing the doctor to determine whether a virus or bacteria is causing the infection.
Myringoplasty:Â Myringoplasty is a surgical procedure where a tissue graft is used to restore the eardrum to help improve hearing. It is mostly done on patients with no ongoing infection or cancer within the ear. This procedure repairs any damage caused by past infections and helps protect from future ones. Most patients will experience a positive change in their hearing within 6 to 8 weeks following the surgery.
Bilateral Myringotomy and Tubes: A bilateral myringotomy and tubes procedure is utilized for individuals who experience persistent fluid build-up in their ears. The surgeon creates a tiny opening and inserts prosthetic tubes during this operation. This opening provides an exit passageway for any fluid to drain away. This procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, thus allowing patients to go home soon after surgery. After a few months, the tubes naturally detach, and the hole closes up naturally.
Tympanoplasty: This procedure can repair the eardrum, prevent inner ear infections, and help recover hearing sensation. This is an outpatient procedure in which your surgeon makes an incision behind your ear to access the eardrum. The surgeon will repair the eardrum using a tissue graft.Â
Mastoidectomy:Â The mastoid, a bone located behind the ear, connecting to the middle ear, can be accessed through a surgical incision. The surgeon then cleans out the mastoid to help prevent recurring ear infections.
Meatoplasty:Â A meatoplasty is conducted when the ear canal has experienced a severe injury. The main purpose of this process is to take cartilage away from the ear to expand the canal, thus rectifying it while at the same time allowing it to be cleaned properly.

If your ear infection occurs frequently, it may lead to more serious complications such as:
If not treated, an ear infection may spread to the surrounding tissue and, in rare cases, even the skull, potentially causing meningitis. Additionally, the infection can reach the mastoid bone located by the ear and create abscesses full of pus.
Here are some proven home remedies that can give you maximum relief from severe earache:
A healthy eardrum looks pinkish-grey. An infection of the middle ear, or an ear with otitis media, looks red, or bulging, and there may be clear, yellow, or even greenish-hued drainage.
Olive oil can be safely used in small amounts to help relieve ear discomfort and reduce earwax buildup. It is an effective, natural solution to many common ear problems. Simply put a few drops of olive oil into the affected ear, gently massage the area, and let the oil sit for a few minutes. Then, clean it gently with a cotton swab. This simple remedy can provide fast and effective relief from ear discomfort.
Listed below are the three common types of ear infections:
Otitis Media: Otitis media is the contamination of the center ear that can be either abrupt or incessant. Kids are mostly affected by sudden otitis media as it is commonly caused by regular colds or when Eustachian tubes are clogged, both of which are common in childhood.
The condition can be relieved with the following:
Otitis Interna: Otitis interna is a condition caused by infection or irritation of the passage between the eardrum and the outer ear. It can be induced by contact with contaminated water or when overly aggressive cleaning damages the area. Fungi or bacteria can also cause an ear infection.
Treatment options include:
Otitis Externa: Â Otitis externa is an inflammatory condition that causes swelling and redness in the external ear canal, which connects the outer ear to the eardrum.
