Medical termination of pregnancy popularly known as medical abortion and MTP, is a method to terminate an unwanted pregnancy until 7-9 weeks, using medications or a combination of drugs. MTP doesn't involve the usage of anesthesia or surgical procedures and can be done at any registered MTP clinic or hospital.
When MTP fails, miscarriage turns out to be incomplete, pregnancy exceeds nine weeks, or it's a molar or ectopic pregnancy surgical procedures are used to remove the embryo and pregnancy tissue from the uterus. Mainly, abortion is done in two ways known as medical abortion and surgical abortion. Which method of abortion is best for you depends on several factors such as the duration and type of pregnancy.
The OB-GYN performs a pelvic ultrasound to confirm the duration of the pregnancy and to detect underlying conditions such as ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy. With the help of blood and urine tests, the obstetrician-gynecologist also tries to detect medical conditions such as anemia, diabetes, low/high blood pressure, and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Based on the findings of the tests, the OB-GYN chooses the best method to terminate the pregnancy (either medical abortion or surgical abortion).
The OB-GYN uses two medicines called Mifepristone and Misoprostol to medically terminate the pregnancy. The patient takes the Mifepristone at the clinic in the presence of the doctor. After that, the patient is asked to take Misoprostol within 24-48 hours of the first medicine. Misoprostol can either be taken at the clinic or home.
Mifepristone blocks the necessary hormone for pregnancy and detaches the embryo from the uterine wall. And Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and open the cervix slightly to expel the pregnancy. The process of abortion starts within 24 hours of taking the second medicine. The medical termination of pregnancy takes around 7-10 days to complete.
