An umbilical hernia occurs when an internal organ bulges or protrudes through the weak muscle around it near the navel. These are more common in infants and small children but can develop in adults also. These may enlarge while laughing, coughing, crying or while passing stool and shrink when you relax.
Treatment
In the case of infants, the doctor will physically check for any protrusion or bulge near the groin area which becomes apparent. The process of diagnosis is usually the same for any individual regardless of age and gender which includes a physical test. Your doctor will try to press the bulge or look for the bulge. However, if the bulge is not apparent, your doctor may ask you to conduct abdominal ultrasound, CT scan, or other imaging tests that can help with the diagnosis.
There are two types of treatment for umbilical hernia-
Open surgery – Open surgery is a conventional type of surgery where the surgeon can fully view the organs and tissues inside your body. The patient is either under general or local anesthesia while undergoing the surgery. Characteristics of open surgery are –
Laparoscopic surgery – It is a highly advanced method of treatment that involves a laparoscope. The surgeon makes a small incision and inserts the laparoscope through it. The laparoscope is attached with a camera on the other end that provides a clear view of the organs and tissues inside. The surgeon locates the precise region of the hernia and operates on it. No, umbilical hernia surgery is not painful because it is done under general or local anesthesia. However, the patient might feel a mild numbness sensation around the surgical site when the effects of anesthesia wear off.
Although open and laparoscopic surgeries are safe treatments, the benefits of laparoscopic umbilical hernia surgery are much more than that of open surgery. Laparoscopic surgery is better than open surgery for umbilical hernia repair because it offers a high recovery rate. Since blood loss is minimum, the patient can resume a normal routine within a week. Along with that, the surgical process is shorter in the case of laparoscopic surgery for umbilical hernia treatment.
No, an infant does not necessarily need to undergo umbilical hernia surgery. Usually, the umbilical hernia in infants goes away on their own by the age of 1 to 2. Surgery for infants is done if –An umbilical hernia is immensely painfulThe size of a hernia is greater than 1-2cm in diameterThe size of the hernia remains unchanged over the first two years.Umbilical hernias do not disappear by the age of 5.Umbilical hernia becomes trapped or blocked in the intestine.
Umbilical hernias can get bigger in size and lead to complications. If a patient chooses to ignore the symptoms, the umbilical hernia can lead to incarcerations or strangulations. Either situation is considered an emergency and can cause life-threatening conditions. If your umbilical hernia strangulates, which can cause blood to stop flowing to the tissue leading to tissue death. This event may result in the rupture or death of an organ.
If your umbilical hernia leads to incarceration, that also becomes riskier to operate and complicated to operate than a regular umbilical hernia. If you avoid treatment in time, the duration of surgery increases with the risk of recurrence on the higher side too. You might experience intense pain in the abdomen followed by nausea and a feverish feeling. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms of an umbilical hernia.
If the umbilical hernia occurs mid-way during pregnancy, the doctors will look for any signs of strangulations and incarceration. If there are no complications, and symptoms show no sign of major discomfort, the doctor can delay the repair surgery until your delivery. However, you can undergo hernia repair after the delivery depending on the diagnosis and choice of surgeon.
The chances of recurrence of umbilical hernia after the surgery becomes very minimal if the treatment is done using surgical mesh as compared to conventional sutures. Some patients may choose to undergo hernia repair after childbirth. Combined surgeries do not usually increase the risk of complications, however, there are other concerns such as the age, health of the patient, quality, and durability of the hernia repair.
