What Is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive treatment used to treat recurrent sinusitis or chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) when medications have stopped working and fail to provide adequate relief.

In balloon sinuplasty, a small balloon is inserted through the nose to dilate sinus openings during this procedure. No implants or additional support are needed to achieve permanent results.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Balloon Sinuplasty?

An ideal candidate for balloon sinuplasty is someone who:

  • Don’t have nasal polyps or tumours
  • Has a mild form of sinusitis
  • Can tolerate the procedure under general anesthesia in which the person remains awake, only the specific area is numb)
  • Has specific sinuses affected, which include cheeks, forehead or back of the nose.

This procedure is usually performed in adults, but children can also be eligible candidates for this procedure if their sinusitis does not improve with medication prescribed by their doctor.

What Happens During A Balloon Sinuplasty?

Before the procedure, the doctor will examine the severity of the condition through a CT scan or report if the person is ideal for this procedure. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia in any ENT hospital.

  • After the anesthesia, the surgeon inserts an endoscope –  a thin, flexible plastic tube with a camera and light on the end, into the nasal passages.
  • The surgeon will slowly put a balloon through the guiding endoscope wire by reaching the spot.
  • Once the balloon is correctly positioned in the nasal passage, the balloon will slowly be inflated and pressed against the sinus wall to force the opening of the sinus.
  • Once the balloon is inflated, the surgeon will wash off all the rubble with a saline solution.
  • At last, the balloon will be removed, and the sinus will be left to dry naturally.

Balloon sinuplasty surgery takes around one to two hours to perform.

Recovery And Results After Balloon Sinuplasty Procedure?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure. Most people can go home the same day or the next and return to normal activities within two or three days after the surgery.

Ideally, doctors advise some precautions for fast recovery from the balloon sinuplasty:

  • Avoid strenuous activities for at least two to three weeks after the procedure.
  • Do not blow your nose one or two days immediately after the surgery.
