What is Breast Surgery?

Breast surgery is a procedure performed on the breasts for various reasons. The surgery alters the appearance and structure of the tissues for medical or cosmetic purposes in both males and females. Breast surgery is broadly classified into two types- cosmetic breast surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.

You can opt for cosmetic breast surgery in case you are not satisfied with the appearance, shape, and size of the breasts. Reconstructive breast surgery is often performed as a medical necessity to address painful symptoms caused due to breast lumps or excessively large breasts.

Reasons to Undergo Breast Surgery

The reasons to get breast surgery are broadly classified into two categories-

Medical Reasons

  • The patient has a benign breast lump that causes pain and other problematic symptoms, such as discharge, tenderness, etc.
  • The patient has a cancerous lump (lumps) in the breast, which can spread to other organs and be fatal.
  • The size of the breast is causing chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain which disrupts regular activities to a great extent.

Cosmetic Reasons

  • The patient is unhappy with the size of the breasts and wishes to enhance them.
  • The breasts are larger than the patient wishes to have and wants to reduce the size.
  • The breasts have sagged considerably, and the patient wants to restore their natural and youthful appearance.
  • The breast tissues were removed to remove a benign or cancerous lump, and now the patient wishes to reconstruct the breasts.

Different Types of Breast Surgery

The different types of breast surgery involve the following-

  • Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty
  • Breast Augmentation or Augmentation Mammoplasty
  • Mastopexy or Breast Lift
  • Male Breast Reduction Surgery or Gynecomastia Surgery
  • Lumpectomy
  • Mastectomy
  • Axillaplasty or Axillary Breast Removal Surgery
  • Surgical Breast Biopsy
  • Breast-Conserving Surgery

Here, we will explain all these types of breast surgery in detail.

Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty

This type of breast surgery is performed to reduce the size of large breasts and make them proportionate to the rest of the body. It can be performed for medical and cosmetic reasons. If a woman has macromastia or breast hypertrophy due to which the breast tissues have become excessively large, reduction mammoplasty is the best option.

The oversized breasts also caused serious medical problems, such as chronic pain in the head, neck, shoulder, and back. Furthermore, secondary health problems may also develop due to overgrowth, such as poor blood circulation, impaired breathing, skin chafing, etc. Breast reduction surgery allows the surgeon to remove the excess tissues and restore the normal appearance and function of the breasts while resolving medical concerns.

Breast Augmentation or Augmentation Mammoplasty

As the name suggests, this type of breast surgery is performed to augment or increase the breast size using fat grafts or breast implants. The procedure can alter the shape, size, and texture of the breasts in the best way possible. In most cases, breast augmentation is performed as an elective cosmetic surgery with the help of artificial breast implants.

Cosmetic breast augmentation involves implanting fat grafts or breast implants underneath or above the muscles under the breast tissues. When breast augmentation is performed as a reconstructive procedure, a tissue expander is placed at the recipient site to accommodate the artificial implants.

Mastopexy or Breast Lift Surgery

This type of breast surgery is performed to lift saggy breasts. It can be done by changing or modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts. In a breast lift, the sagginess is removed by excising the excess glandular, adipose, skin tissues, overstretched suspensory ligaments, etc. A mastopexy is often combined with breast reduction or implants to deliver the desired results.

Breast lift surgery can be performed for women of all age groups to give them younger-looking breasts. Various techniques that can be used for lifting are the anchor technique, inverted-T technique, and lollipop technique. Each of these techniques uses a different approach to remove the excess tissues and give the lifting effect.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Commonly known as gynecomastia surgery, male breast reduction is the procedure of removing the enlarged breast glandular and fatty tissues in males. Normally, breast tissues are present in both males and females. But these tissues don’t grow in males naturally. However, due to hormonal imbalance, these breast tissues start to grow in males and cause cosmetic and medical concerns.

Initially, the condition can be managed by addressing the cause of the hormonal imbalance. But if the tissues continue to grow, surgical removal becomes necessary to address the individual’s concern.

Lumpectomy

Also known as a partial mastectomy, breast segmental resection, or breast-wide local excision, lumpectomy is the surgical removal of a portion of the breast tissues due to medical reasons. A lumpectomy is recommended to the patient as a treatment for benign or malignant tumors. It is also considered a breast conservation surgery as a considerable amount of breast tissue is preserved during the procedure.

Mastectomy

This type of breast surgery is performed to remove one or both breasts, partially or completely. It is most commonly carried out to treat breast cancer and to prevent cancer from spreading to other healthy tissues. Generally, the surgeon also removes the lymph nodes present around the breasts to ensure that the cancer has not spread to the surrounding tissues.

In many patients, breast reconstruction is performed immediately after mastectomy to restore the natural appearance. The reconstruction may involve using breast expanders, autologous tissue reconstruction, and/or combining these techniques.

Axillaplasty or Axillary Breast Removal

Axillaplasty is the procedure of removal of abnormal breast tissues in the axilla. Normally, the tail of breast tissues extends to the underarm or axilla. In some cases, the breast tissues start to grow in the underarm region and create a bulge. In some cases, the bulge is not painful but causes cosmetic concerns. In other cases, the bulge becomes painful and restricts arm movements.

To address these concerns, axillaplasty is recommended for the patient. During the procedure, the breast glandular tissues, lymph nodes, and/or fat tissues are removed. The removal is done through a combination of excision and liposuction techniques.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Breast Surgery?

To undergo any type of breast surgery, the patient must meet the following criteria-

  • The patient is physically healthy with no serious underlying condition.
  • The patient is not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • The breasts must be fully developed.
  • In the case of cosmetic breast surgery, the patient must be taking the decision without being influenced by someone or something.

How to Prepare for Breast Surgery?

The preparation for breast surgery starts with the initial consultation. The doctor will confirm that you are a good candidate for the procedure and ask the following-

  • Adjust the medications and avoid using blood-thinning medications at least a week before the surgery is scheduled.
  • Get a comprehensive health check-up to rule out the possibility of any underlying condition that can increase the risks and complications.
  • Stop smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages entirely. Smoking can damage the blood vessels, and alcohol can cause severe dehydration in the body.
  • Avoid taking herbal supplements, vitamins and using recreational drugs.
  • The surgeon will also take photographs of the breast from different angles to customize the treatment plan as required by the patient.
  • As breast surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, the patient is asked to avoid eating or drinking 6 to 8 hours before the procedure.

What Happens During Breast Surgery?

Every type of breast surgery is a complex procedure and requires a higher degree of expertise. Generally, the steps involved in breast surgery include the following:

  • First, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia is administered to the patient.
  • Depending on the type of breast surgery being performed, one or multiple incisions are made in the target area.
  • The internal tissues are accessed, and the required modifications are done. For instance, if the patient has a breast lump, the lump is excised while keeping the surrounding tissues intact. If breast augmentation is being performed, the surgeon will insert the breast implant in the target area and fill it with saline or silicone gel/oil to enhance the breast size.
  • The incisions are closed using stitches, surgical tape, or skin glue, and bandages are placed over the breasts.

The patient is given a detailed recovery guide and discharged from the hospital on the same day.

What to Expect After Breast Surgery?

Immediately after the breast surgery, expect to feel slightly disoriented due to the effects of anesthesia. The patient is generally kept under observation for a couple of hours so that the medical team can ensure that there are minimal chances of risks and complications.

The patient is given a detailed recovery guide and instructions that must be followed post-op for a quick and smooth recovery.

Recovery After Breast Surgery

General instructions that patients often have to follow after breast surgery include the following-

  • Initially, after the surgery, a drainage device may be placed in the incision line to allow the blood and other fluids to drain out. Do not touch the bandage until the bodily fluids are draining. Once the drainage stops, the surgeon will remove the drainage tube and stitches.
  • Change the bandages over the breasts regularly and keep the area clean and dry. Also, keep the body hydrated to ensure that the skin doesn’t get too dry, which can overstretch the tissues and cause irritation in the skin.
  • Don’t let the incisions get wet. This includes avoiding bathing and splashing the incisions with water to clean them. Instead, use a sponge and warm water to clean the incisions and pat them dry with a soft towel.
  • Do not apply any chemical-based product to the incision for at least a week. After that, as the skin heals, the doctor will give permission to use a mild lotion, vitamin 3, pure lanolin, or other chemical-free moisturizers.
  • The doctor will prescribe pain medications, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, steroids, etc., to manage pain, infection, inflammation, and swelling. Take the prescribed medications as directed to reduce the chances of complications.
  • Avoid engaging in strenuous physical activities, but try stretching a little to regain mobility. This will help improve blood flow throughout the body, improving healing.
  • Do not drive while taking pain medications. Ask the doctor and take his/her permission to resume driving.
  • Also, avoid drinking alcohol and smoking at all costs. Alcohol causes dehydration in the body, while smoking impairs healing by damaging the blood vessels.
  • Take regular follow-ups with the doctor to ensure that the body is healing properly.

Potential Breast Surgery Side Effects

Each type of breast surgery has slightly different risks. Some common breast surgery side effects include the following-

  • Bleeding and bruising in the treated area
  • Mild to moderate pain and tenderness in the breast region
  • Changes in the sensations in the breast or nipple
  • Redness and swelling in the surgery site
  • Unwanted scarring in or around the breast tissues
  • Difficulty or inability to breastfeed
  • Asymmetrical results in terms of shape, size, and appearance
  • Displacement of the breast implants (in case of breast augmentation)
  • Scar tissue formation or capsular contracture (in the case of breast implants)

Most of the risks, side effects, and complications associated with breast surgery can be mitigated successfully by the surgeon. Others can be avoided by the patient by following the recovery tips carefully.

Breast Surgery Cost in India

The cost of breast surgery in India ranges from Rs. 70,000 to Rs. 2,50,000 approximately. The actual cost of the procedure varies significantly for each patient due to the following factors-

  • The reason for breast surgery
  • The type of breast surgery
  • Choice of the hospital

  • Surgeon and anesthetist’s fee
  • Diagnostic tests and evaluations
  • Prescribed medications

It will be better if you get a closer estimate for breast surgery costs from the healthcare provider.

Tips to Choose the Best Breast Surgeon in India

Here are some tips that will help patients to choose the best breast surgeon in India.

  • Get a referral from your primary care provider for a breast surgeon. The doctor will be able to give you a reference for a well-certified and trained plastic or cosmetic surgeon.
  • Find out how many years of experience the surgeon has and his/her specialization. Plastic surgeons often specialize in various procedures. So, ensure that one of the specializations is breast surgery and that he/she has performed numerous surgeries successfully.
  • Check whether or not the hospital with which the doctor is affiliated is accredited. The accreditation is important to verify that the treatment center is upholding the standards of medical care.
  • See if the surgeon communicates well and answers all the queries during the consultation. The patient must not feel like he/she is being pushed unnecessarily to undergo breast surgery.
  • If possible, ask the surgeon to show the before-and-after pictures of previous patients who had breast surgery under his/her care.

Choosing the best breast surgeon requires a lot of effort and research. But you can make the search easier by calling Pristyn Care. We have our own team of plastic surgeons across various cities in India.
