  • What is acute sinusitis?

Infection or allergy can cause acute sinusitis, which involves inflammation and swelling of the sinuses inside your nose. This leads to mucus buildup and disruption of drainage.

It might be difficult to breathe through your nose if you suffer from acute sinusitis. Symptoms include swollen corners of your eyes, throbbing pain in your face, and headaches.

In the majority of cases, acute sinusitis occurs as a result of a common cold. The majority of cases resolve in one to ten days if a bacterial infection does not cause them. Acute sinusitis can often be treated with home remedies.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

When is treatment required for acute sinusitis?

Surgery may be an option if your sinus is due to a deviated septum, polyps, or structural problems, and symptoms last for more than 12 weeks.

The doctors generally prescribe antibiotics, nasal corticosteroids, saline nasal sprays, decongestants, anti-allergic medicines, and immunotherapy in uncomplicated acute sinusitis cases. Infections that do not respond to medications may require surgical intervention.

What happens in acute sinusitis surgery?

There are two approaches mentioned below to treat serious sinus conditions. Here’s an overview of both procedures:

    Functional endoscopic sinus surgery

    • Your surgeon will put a decongestant solution to relieve congestion in your nose and then do a nasal endoscopy.
    • Give you anesthesia by putting a solution in your nose.
    • Using an endoscope, your surgeon may insert tiny surgical tools to remove bones, infected tissues, or nasal polyps, causing nasal congestion.
    • Finally, your surgeon will pack your nose with a bandage to absorb the blood and fluid discharge after the surgery.

    Balloon Sinuplasty

It is an alternate option to FESS. Here’re the steps involved with the process:

    • Your surgeon will give you local anesthesia to start the procedure.
    • With an endoscope, the surgeon will put a catheter into your nose to place a small balloon in your sinus.
    • Then, the balloon will be inflated to unblock your sinus.
    • Finally, the passage will be rinsed with saline solution.

How to prepare for acute sinusitis treatment?

Your surgeon will recommend you a pre-operational examination to ensure that you are fit for the procedure and have no complications.

Every individual’s condition is different, so your surgeon may recommend these instructions to be prepared for the treatment.

    1. Stop smoking, it can make your sinusitis worse.
    2. Quit tobacco and alcohol as well.
    3. Stop taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, etc. they may cause excessive bleeding during or after the surgery.
    4. Do fasting before midnight on the day of our surgery.
    5. Assure you have someone with you during hospitalization and drop you at home after the treatment.
    6. Keep all the important documents, like insurance papers, your identity proofs, etc, with you before you are hospitalized.

How to recover after acute sinusitis treatment?

Your surgeon will recommend some instructions to enhance your recovery speed and ensure your relief after sinusitis surgery. Some suggestions are mentioned below:

    • Rinse your nose using nasal saline sprays every two to three hours after the surgery.
    • Start sinus irrigation with the sinus rinse kits to remove all the debris left behind.
    • It is normal to have bloody discharge for the first few days after the procedure, but if you experience excessive bleeding, keep your head elevated and dab your nose with tissue or cotton.
    • If you are feeling sinus pressure after the surgery, do not take any other medicines apart from the ones prescribed by your doctor. . Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen.
    • Feeling tired is normal during the recovery process, so take proper rest.
    • Avoid strenuous activities like weightlifting, jogging, etc., as these activities may trigger bleeding.

Risks and complications associated with acute sinusitis treatment

As with any surgery, there are some risks and complications associated with sinusitis surgery, including:

    • Excessive Bleeding: Minor bleeding is normal and expected during the surgery. In rare cases, excessive bleeding may occur in which your surgeon may have to pause the surgery.
    • Infection: There is a risk of infection caused by medical equipment. To reduce the risk, your surgeon will suggest you some antibiotics immidiately after the surgery.
    • Cerebrospinal fluid leak: The surgeon works on the ethmoid bone during the procedure. In case the bone gets injured it can result in CSF leakage. This is a very rare complication associated with the surgery.
    • Effect on eyes: The sinus is very close to the eyes, which creates a possibility of eye injury during the procedure.
    • Other risks may include changes in the sense of your smell.
