When is Axillary Breast Removal Covered by Health Insurance?

Breast tissues normally extend to the underarm region, but these tissues don’t grow abnormally. However, in around 2% to 6% of women, these tissues start to grow and cause physical and cosmetic concerns. When the patient is opting for surgical treatment due to cosmetic concerns, the surgery is not considered a medical necessity. Hence, the insurance plan won’t cover the expenses.

If the surgery is recommended to the patients for medical reasons, then the procedure qualifies for insurance coverage. The patient must have the following symptoms that signify that the axillary breast tissues are causing problems-

  • The size of the underarm lump is increasing.
  • The patient is unable to maintain a proper arm posture.
  • The movement of the affected arm is restricted to a great extent.
  • The armpit lump is causing pain and discomfort.
  • The patient feels pain along the medial arm.
  • The lump tissues are hard and cause considerable swelling in the area.

Another scenario where the treatment is most certainly covered under health insurance is if the axillary breast tissues are found to be cancerous. All these symptoms indicate that the removal of these axillary breast tissues is medically necessary. Thus, the treatment expenses are payable by health insurance partially or in entirety.

How to Claim Health Insurance for Axillary Breast Treatment?

There are two ways a patient can use the health insurance policy to cover the expenses of axillary breast removal – cashless claim and reimbursement claim. The process to get these claims are explained below.

Cashless Claim Process for Axillary Breast Removal

A cashless claim allows the patient to pay the hospital bill upfront.  Through this claim, the medical bills are settled between the hospital and the insurer directly. To avail of the cashless facility, the treatment should meet one of the following criteria-

    • The patient is hospitalized for 24 hours.
    • The surgery is covered under daycare procedures.

When these requirements are fulfilled, the patient can use health insurance for cashless payment only at a network hospital of the insurance company. The claim is processed in the following steps-

    • Schedule the surgery at the hospital and provide the necessary documents to the TPA (third-party administrator).
    • Fill out the cashless claim form and submit it to the TPA.
    • The TPA team will submit the claim form and respective documents to the insurance company.
    • The insurer will validate and verify the documents and the proposed treatment plan. The patient will also receive a call from the insurance company to confirm the legitimacy of the claim.
    • Once the cashless claim is approved, the patient will be notified through a text message and/or email.

The hospital bills are settled before the patient’s discharge. To ensure that the patient doesn’t face any difficulty or delay during the discharge, it’s always recommended to inform the insurance company regarding the treatment 2-3 days before the surgery is planned. This will streamline the process, and the claim will be authorized as soon as possible.

Reimbursement Claim Process for Axillary Breast Removal

The reimbursement claim can be requested during and after the treatment. This facility is availed by the patient when he/she is getting treatment at a non-empaneled hospital. Through this claim, the patient can get reimbursement for the amount paid upfront at the hospital for the treatment.

While the cashless claim is handled mostly by the hospital’s insurance team and the insurer, a reimbursement claim is handled by the patient without much assistance from the hospital authorities.

The steps to get a reimbursement claim are explained below-

    • Inform the insurance provider about the treatment during the hospitalization and after discharge.
    • Make the payment directly to the hospital and obtain the reimbursement claim form online or through the insurance agent.
    • Provide the required documents, such as discharge summary, ID proof, etc., and submit the form within 30 days of discharge. If delayed further, the patient won’t be eligible to get reimbursement.
    • The insurance company will review the documents and provide approval after verification.
    • The sanctioned amount will be credited to the patient’s account directly.

FAQs around Axillary Breast Tissue Removal

Is there a waiting period for which I have to wait to get an insurance claim for Axillaplasty?

Generally, the insurance policy has a specified waiting period for pre-existing diseases. So, if the patient already had axillary breast tissues at the time of purchasing the policy and the condition was declared, then the patient must wait for a specified period to claim insurance to get the treatment. If the condition didn’t exist and started to develop later, the waiting period clause won’t be applicable, and the patient can avail insurance to cover the treatment.

When is Axillaplasty (Axillary Breast Removal) not covered by insurance?

If the lump in the underarm is not symptomatic or causing any problems, the treatment is considered cosmetic and not covered by the health insurance policy.

Can I use my corporate insurance policy for axillary breast tissue removal?

Yes, whether an individual has personal or corporate health insurance, the policy can be claimed for medical issues. The patient only needs to provide the insurance e-card to the hospital authorities and talk to the insurance providers to understand the terms and conditions of the policy.

    What is a co-payment clause?

The co-payment clause refers to the arrangement in which the policyholder is liable to pay a portion of the medical expenses on their own, and the health insurance company will cover the remaining amount. The amount that needs to be paid by the policyholder might vary depending on the plan purchased.

When can my cashless or reimbursement claim get rejected?

The insurance company may deny the cashless or reimbursement claim in the following cases- 1. The treatment sought by the patient has a waiting period clause, and the period is not over yet. 2. The hospital bills and other documents provided are falsified or can’t be verified. In both cases, the insurance company has the right to reject the claim request.

Is it possible to reduce or levy off the waiting period?

The patient can request the insurance provider to levy off or reduce the waiting period but the decision is entirely up to the insurers. If the insurance company agrees to do so, the patient will most likely have to pay higher premiums in the future.
