  • Breast Augmentation Recovery- An Overview

As every woman’s body is different, the recovery time can vary significantly. Furthermore, the recovery is affected by various factors, including the extent of the surgery, technique used, placement of the breast implants, and the patient’s healing abilities.

Typically, it takes around 4 to 6 weeks to recover after breast augmentation surgery. If transaxillary implantation is done, the recovery will be short and quick as the incision size is smaller than other techniques. In case of inframammary or periareolar incision is done, the recovery will be longer.

Week-to-Week Recovery Timeline After Breast Augmentation

The recovery timeline for most patients will be as below-

    24-hours Post-Op

    • The patient will experience soreness, nausea, fatigue, and tightness in the chest.
    • There will be significant swelling and bruising in the breasts.
    • The doctor will advise the patient to rest properly after the surgery until the anesthesia effects wear off completely.
    • In the 24 hours after surgery, the patient will have severe pain and discomfort, which needs to be managed with pain medications.
    • The patient needs to wear a post-op surgical support bra to support the muscles and keep the implants in place.

    5-7 Days Post-Op

    • There will be mild pain and discomfort in the treated area.
    • It’s safe for the patient to resume normal activities like walking when approved by the doctor.
    • Continue to avoid strenuous activities, even lifting the arms above the head, as it can cause irritation and bleeding.
    • The doctor may advise gently massaging the breasts to help relax the muscles, reduce swelling, and settle the implants properly with the natural shape.

    2-4 Weeks Post-Op

    • Within 2 weeks, the patient will start to feel a lot better and there will be little to no pain and discomfort.
    • Minor swelling and bruising will still be present.
    • The doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to remove the stitches and monitor the recovery.
    • The patient is encouraged to start light exercises but still has to refrain from strenuous activities.
    • Continue to wear the support bra to keep the implants in place.
    • The doctor will adjust the pain medications and reduce the dosage.
    • Silicone gel or scar reduction creams might be suggested by the doctor to improve the scar appearance.

    4-6 Weeks Post-Op

    • Most patients fully recover within 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
    • The swelling and bruising will disappear almost completely.
    • The breasts will start to look and feel more natural.
    • Another post-op consultation will be scheduled within 4 to 6 weeks so that the doctor can do a full evaluation of the breast implants.

After 6 weeks, the scars will start to fade away gradually, but the appearance will take almost a year or so to improve. The range of motion will also improve after one month of surgery. The patient can resume all activities 10-12 weeks after the surgery. It’ll be best to talk to the doctor to clear all doubts and concerns about activities, diet, lifestyle, etc., during the recovery period.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Diet to Follow After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Proper nutrition is essential after breast augmentation surgery to improve the body’s healing abilities and ease the recovery process. The doctor will provide instructions regarding the foods to include and exclude from the diet post-surgery to recover quickly and prevent complications.

Some common dietary recommendations after breast augmentation surgery are given below-

    • Reduce Salt Intake- Avoid eating foods that have high sodium content, as it can lead to water retention, which further increases the risk of post-op swelling.
    • Take Vitamin K- Incorporate vitamin K into the diet as it is a fat-soluble nutrient that prevents bleeding after surgery. Leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach are a rich source of vitamin K.
    • Consider Collagen-Rich Foods- The body will need collagen to improve the skin texture and reduce scarring after the procedure. Items like eggs, beans, fish, and root vegetables are the foods to promote collagen production.
    • Include Foods Rich in Antioxidants- Eating foods like berries, pomegranates, papaya, pineapples, etc., is also important for reducing the oxidation levels and effects of free radicals on the skin and other organs.
    • Add Vitamin C-Rich Foods- Vitamin C facilitates the wound healing process and promotes collagen production. This ensures that the scarring is minimal.
    • Consume Foods with Anti-inflammatory Properties- The breasts will be inflamed after the surgery. To reduce and control the inflammation, the doctor will advise adding anti-inflammatory foods like salmon, walnuts, fish oil, flax seeds, hempseed, halibut, etc., to the diet.
    • Drink Plenty of Water- Fluid imbalance is very common after surgical procedures. Thus, the patient needs to drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from the body and promote healing.
    • Take High Fiber Diet- Constipation is very common after surgery due to medications and lack of movement. To prevent that, the patient is asked to eat fiber-rich foods, such as avocados, apples, beans, raspberries, lentils, etc.
    • Avoid Caffeine & Alcohol- Do not eat caffeine or chocolate for at least 30 days after the surgery, as they constrict blood vessels and interfere with the healing process. Alcohol acts as a blood thinner and increases the risk of bleeding. Furthermore, mixing alcohol and pain medications is not good as it can enhance the effects of opiates.
    • Don’t Consume Spicy, Oily, And Preserved Foods- Doctors recommend avoiding spicy, oily, and preserved foods after the surgery, as they can upset the stomach and cause irritation, bloating, and gastric issues. Such foods include bacon, red meat, hot dogs, french fries, cheeseburgers, canned fish, pickles, etc.

Healthy eating habits will go a long way in recovery after breast augmentation. These foods will also prevent weight gain during the recovery.

Lifestyle Changes Recommended After Breast Enhancement

To achieve the ideal results after breast augmentation, patients need to make certain lifestyle changes to support their recovery. Most of these changes will help to speed up the healing process, reduce the risk of post-surgery complications, and make the recovery process easy and smooth.

    • Sleep In Reclining Position: Following all types of breast surgery, the patients must sleep in a reclining position to manage the swelling and reduce fluid accumulation. This is a must in the first week after surgery. After that, it’ll be fine to sleep on the back, but the patients still need to avoid sleeping on their sides for 2 weeks and abdomen for 6 weeks.
    • Avoid Submerging Into Standing Water: A main concern for patients is bathing after surgery. It’s important to avoid bathing in pools, hot tubs, lakes, etc. The water contains certain chemicals that can increase the risk of infection in the stitches. The patient is allowed to take showers the next day after surgery to ensure the incision site is clean.
    • Avoid Physically Demanding Activities: Most patients feel like it’ll be okay to do some house chores a few days after surgery. However, all physical activities should be avoided in the first week after surgery as they place undue stress on the incision sites. It’s okay to do light activities, such as walking, but doing house chores and other physical tasks should be limited.
    • Maintain Healthy Habits- The patient needs to quit smoking before and after the surgery and reduce alcohol intake as well. These habits can increase the chances of post-op complications, such as delayed healing, blood clots, etc. Along with this, it’s also important to eat a healthy and balanced diet that promotes healing and drink plenty of water to keep the body hydrated.
    • Don’t Purchase New Clothes or Wear Underwire Bra- Most women feel very excited to fill up their wardrobes and purchase new clothes after breast augmentation. But it’ll be best to wait for a couple of months and let the final results appear. Furthermore, it’s also important to avoid wearing an underwire bra for months after the surgery, as the wire can irritate the incisions, especially in the case of inframammary incisions.
    • Avoid Direct Sunlight- Another thing that the patient has to be careful about is sun exposure. Direct contact of the skin with sunlight can damage the skin, cause hyperpigmentation, darkening of the skin, and even interfere with the healing process. The hyperpigmentation and darkening of skin will make scarring more visible. For best results, avoid sun exposure for at least 6 weeks post-surgery.

Patients can consult the doctor if they have any doubts or concerns. The doctor and his/her team guide the patients to ensure they don’t face any difficulty during the recovery period.

    Exercises After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Typically, patients are not advised to exercise or perform any strenuous activity in the first month after surgery. It’s important to focus on resting, healing, and limiting physical activities. The patient is only advised to start walking at a slow pace to improve the blood flow in the breast region to promote healing.

Some exercise recommendations by the doctor will include the following-

    • Consider using a stationary bicycle or elliptical machine instead of running or jogging to keep upper body movements limited.
    • Try arm and shoulder exercises to move the pectoral muscles in a controlled way. Such exercises include shoulder rolls, shoulder wings, arm circles, etc.

In case the breast implants are placed below the pectoral muscles, muscle contractions from exercises can shift the implants if they haven’t settled. Therefore, it’s important to wait and get approval from the doctor to resume exercises.

Dos & Don’ts After Breast Augmentation

Here is a list of the most common dos and don’ts recommended by the doctor after breast surgery.

    Dos

    • Take the prescribed pain medications as directed by the doctor.
    • Get plenty of rest to allow the body to heal before resuming activities.
    • Massage the breasts to help the implants settle faster.
    • Take a healthy and balanced diet to promote healing.
    • Keep the upper body elevated or in a reclining position even while sleeping for at least a week after the surgery.
    • Contact the doctor if symptoms like persistent fever, blood/pus drainage from stitches, or severe pain are present.

    Don’ts

    • Sleep on your stomach or lie back entirely after the surgery.
    • Lift heavy objects or perform strenuous exercises until approved by the doctor.
    • Go for a swim in any waterbody, including swimming pools, bathtubs, jacuzzis, lakes, or oceans.
    • Smoke or use any tobacco products.
    • Update the wardrobe right away before recovery is complete.
    • Try to resume all activities at once or go back to work in a week.
