  • Breast Lump Surgery Recovery- An Overview

The recovery after breast lump removal surgery typically takes a month or so. Various methods are available to remove breast lumps, and the recovery duration primarily depends on the technique used and the extent of the procedure.

For instance, if a lumpectomy is performed to remove only one lump, the patient will be able to recover in a short time, i.e., 2-3 weeks. However, if multiple lumps are removed from the breasts, recovery will take longer than a month. The doctor will provide an estimate for the recovery duration depending on the severity of the condition and the treatment method chosen for the lump removal.

Week-to-Week Recovery Timeline After Breast Lump Removal

The recovery timeline after breast lump removal can vary depending on the type of procedure performed and individual factors such as age, overall health, and the size and location of the lump. The general week-to-week recovery timeline for most patients will be as below.

    Week 1:

    • The patient may experience some pain, swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the surgical area.
    • It is important to take the prescribed pain medications, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medicines to manage pain, prevent infection, and reduce the swelling in the breasts.
    • The patient should avoid lifting heavy objects or engaging in strenuous physical activity.

    Week 2:

    • The patient may still experience some discomfort and swelling in the urgical site.
    • The doctor may give permission to resume light activities such as walking, but heavy lifting and strenuous exercises should still be avoided.
    • The patient will have a follow-up appointment scheduled in the second week so that the doctor can monitor the recovery and remove stitches, if any.

    Week 3:

    • The incision site should start to heal, and the doctor will advise using silicone gel or creams to reduce scarring.
    • The patient may still experience some mild pain and discomfort. The doctor will adjust the pain medication dosage accordingly.
    • The doctor will ask the patient to gradually increase activity, like walking and performing basic house chores.
    • Strenuous activities and heavy lifting should still be avoided.

    Week 4-6:

    • The incision site will mostly heal within 4 to 6 weeks, and the discomfort will be mild.
    • It’ll be safe for the patient to resume most normal activities, but he/she still needs to avoid lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercises until the doctor approves.
    • Another follow-up will be scheduled during this period to monitor the progress and see if the breast(s) is healing properly.

The doctor will provide detailed post-surgery instructions that the patients need to follow throughout the recovery period. These instructions will ensure that the patient recovers as soon as possible without experiencing any complications.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Diet to Follow After Treatment of Breast Lump

A healthy diet is essential to promote and improve the body’s healing abilities. Thus, the doctor will give dietary recommendations that will include the foods that the patient should eat and avoid after surgery. The general recommendations will include the following-

    Foods to Eat:

    • Lean Protein: Choose lean protein sources such as chicken, fish, tofu, and legumes to support wound healing and muscle recovery.
    • Fruits and Vegetables: Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health and boost the immune system. Include leafy greens, berries, citrus fruits, and cruciferous vegetables.
    • Whole Grains: Choose whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole-wheat bread for sustained energy and support bowel regularity.
    • Healthy Fats: Include healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocado, and olive oil to support cardiovascular health and brain function.
    • Water and Other Fluids: Staying hydrated is important for healing and overall health. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water or other healthy fluids per day, such as herbal tea or low-sugar fruit juice.

    Foods to Avoid:

    • Processed and Sugary Foods: Processed and sugary foods can lead to inflammation and compromise the immune system. Avoid foods such as candy, pastries, and fried foods.
    • Alcohol: Alcohol can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of complications. Avoid alcohol during the recovery period or as recommended by your doctor.
    • Caffeine: Caffeine can interfere with sleep and increase anxiety. Limit your intake of caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea, and soda.
    • Spicy Foods: Spicy foods can irritate the digestive system and increase discomfort after surgery. Avoid spicy foods for at least a few days after surgery or as recommended by your doctor.

Talk to the doctor regarding the dietary recommendations and restrictions.

Lifestyle Changes Recommended After Breast Lump Surgery

The patient will also have to make certain lifestyle changes to support recovery and overall health. Some general lifestyle recommendations will include the following-

    • Get Enough Rest: After surgery, the body needs time to heal. So, it’s important to get enough rest. Make sure to get plenty of sleep each night and take breaks as needed during the day.
    • Physical Movements- The doctor will recommend light walking after surgery to improve blood circulation and promote healing. But don’t try to engage in exercises that can cause discomfort or tear up the stitches.
    • Manage Stress: Surgery can be stressful, and stress can affect the body’s immune system and slow down the healing process. Try to find ways to manage stress, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga.
    • Quit Smoking: The surgeon will advise the patient to quit smoking before and after surgery. Smoking can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
    • Wear Comfortable Clothing: After surgery, the patient may need to wear a special bra or compression garment to support the breast tissues. It’ll be best to wear clothes that are comfortable and don’t rub against the breasts.

These minor changes will help the patients to get back to their regular lives as soon as possible.

    Exercises Recommended During Recovery Period

The type and intensity of exercise recommended during the recovery period after breast lump surgery can vary depending on the extent and type of surgery performed. Physical movements are important to improve blood circulation and mobility after surgery. Thus, the doctor will create an exercise program suitable for the patient, which generally consists of the following-

    • General stretching can help prevent stiffness and improve the range of motion. It’s important to avoid stretching too aggressively or pushing through pain.
    • Walking improves cardiovascular health and prevents blood clots due to restricted movements. The patient can start with short walks and gradually increase the distance and duration of walks.
    • Shoulder and arm exercises, such as shoulder rolls, arm circles, etc., are also helpful in the following weeks after surgery to rebuild strength and flexibility in the arms and chest region. However, the exercise should be done considering the pain and discomfort.
    • Yoga or pilates can also be helpful in improving flexibility in the arms and chest. These exercises should be done under the supervision of an instructor.

If the patient feels any kind of pain or discomfort while performing physical activities, he/she should stop immediately. It’ll be best to wait a while longer to start exercising.

Dos & Don’ts to Follow After Breast Lump Removal

Some common dos and don’ts tips to follow after surgery are given below.

    Do’s

    • Follow your doctor’s instructions to care for the surgical incision, change bandages, and return for follow-up appointments.

    • Wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support the breasts during recovery.
    • Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, etc.
    • Attend the follow-up appointments as suggested by the doctor.

    Don’ts

    • Touch or poke the stitches, as it can cause infection.
    • Lift anything heavy or do strenuous activities for at least a few weeks after surgery.
    • Smoke or use tobacco products, as they slow down healing and increase the risk of complications.
    • Drink alcohol for at least a few weeks after surgery.
    • Take baths or go swimming until the doctor gives you permission to do so.
