Does Health Insurance Cover Breast Reduction?

The answer to this question depends on the patient’s reason for choosing breast reduction. Health insurance covers breast reduction if the surgery is recommended by the doctor for medical purposes to treat chronic physical and psychological issues. So, before you schedule the procedure, make sure that you talk to your insurance providers and get their authorization. If your case doesn’t meet the criteria for a medically necessary procedure, it will be considered cosmetic, and the insurance company has the right to deny the claim.

In some cases, breast reduction may have cosmetic and reconstructive benefits. In this scenario, some parts of the treatment may be covered by insurance, and others won’t. This information can be cleared by the insurance agent of the company.

  • When is Breast Reduction Considered Medically Necessary?

Breast reduction is covered by health insurance when it is medically necessary. And it is up to the doctor to determine whether the surgery is medically required. The insurance company will need proof that you’ve had some or all of the following symptoms for at least 6 months-

    • Rashes or skin infections that recur even after treatment.
    • The extra large breasts restrict your physical activities.
    • The nerves underneath the breast tissues are compressed.
    • Your posture and spine alignment is affected due to breast hypertrophy.
    • You have neck, back, and/or shoulder pain due to the breast size.
    • The shoulder grooves from the bra straps are consistent.

The symptoms mentioned above signify that the woman’s breasts are not proportionate with the rest of her body, and she has been experiencing other issues due to oversized breasts. Thus, reducing the breast size is deemed medically beneficial for the patient, and the insurance company provides approval for reduction mammoplasty after verifying the medical records.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

When is breast reduction not covered by insurance?

The insurance providers exclude cosmetic procedures from the plans. It means that if you undergo breast reduction for cosmetic reasons, the insurance company can deny your claim to cover the treatment expense.

In general, the exclusions include, but are not limited to, the following-

    • The surgery is done to improve the appearance and doesn’t address functional or physiologic impairment.
    • Only liposuction is being used for reduction.
    • If the surgery is not focused on improving or restoring the physiologic function of the breasts.
    • Breast reduction doesn’t meet the criteria for reconstructive procedures.

There are standard metrics used by plastic and cosmetic surgeons to differentiate cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. If the amount of tissues that are to be removed is below the 5th percentile, the procedure is considered cosmetic and doesn’t qualify for insurance coverage. If the amount is above the 22nd percentile and the patient has a functional impairment, the procedure is considered reconstructive and qualifies for insurance coverage.
