  • Cataract Surgery Recovery- An Overview

Most people heal quickly after cataract surgery and resume daily activities within 2-3 weeks. The complete recovery in healthy patients usually takes around 4-6 weeks. But in some patients whose healing abilities are compromised, the recovery may take around 6-8 weeks.

The recovery duration varies for each patient depending on factors like the severity of the condition, the type of cataract, the technique used, and the patient’s age. Furthermore, patients who undergo surgery for age-related cataracts need a longer duration for recovery compared to secondary and traumatic cataract surgery. The doctor provides detailed instructions for diet, activities, exercises, and other lifestyle changes to ensure the patient recovers as soon as possible.

Week-to-Week Recovery Timeline After Cataract Surgery

As cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, the patient is sent home on the same day. Immediately after the surgery, the patient will experience grittiness, watering, blurry vision, double vision, and blood spots in the eyes. These are temporary side effects of cataract surgery and improve within 4 weeks. The cataract operation recovery timeline is explained below-

    Week 1 of:

    • In the initial days, the patient will experience blurry vision and double vision, which will improve as the treated eye adjusts to the newly implanted intraocular lens.
    • The eye might ache and feel tender as it heals. The patient will feel like there is sand in the eye.
    • Protective eyewear is given to the patient to ensure the patient doesn’t accidentally poke or rub the eyes.
    • The patient will meet the doctor on the next day after surgery to ensure that there is no vision loss and the eyes are healing properly.
    • The prescribed eye drops should be used as directed to reduce inflammation, prevent infection, and promote healing.
    • It’s important that the patient avoid strenuous activities that can strain the eyes.

    Week 2:

    • The vision will continue to improve, but the patient may still experience some haziness or blurriness.
    • Most patients can resume their normal daily activities after the first week of recovery.
    • The patient may still need to use the prescribed eye drops as directed by the surgeon.
    • The patient can stop using the protective eye shield and watch TV or other digital screens from a distance.

    Week 3:

    • Another follow-up appointment will be scheduled in the 3rd week so that the doctor can monitor the healing.
    • The patient’s vision will significantly improve at this point, and the pain and itchiness will be minimal.
    • The usage frequency of steroid drops will be tapered off.
    • The patient can resume basic activities but still needs to avoid strenuous activities or contact sports.

    Week 4:

    • By this time, most patients fully recover from cataract surgery.
    • The vision will significantly improve within 4 weeks.
    • The doctor may advise to continue using eye drops if necessary.

If the patient experiences symptoms like eye pain, redness, crusting, eye floaters, or the vision gets worse after surgery, he/she should get in touch with the doctor immediately.

Diet Tips to Follow After Cataract Treatment

There are no specific dietary restrictions that need to be followed after cataract treatment. However, following a healthy and well-balanced diet is always recommended to promote overall health and well-being, including eye health. Here are some dietary tips to consider after cataract treatment:

    • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They can help protect your eyes from damage and promote healing.
    • Include omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. They are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna, as well as in flaxseeds and walnuts. These healthy fats can help reduce inflammation and improve eye health.
    • Avoid foods high in saturated and trans fats as they can increase the risk of developing certain eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration. Try to limit the intake of fried foods, processed snacks, and high-fat meats.
    • Drink plenty of water, around 8 to 10 glasses per day, to keep the body hydrated and prevent dryness in the eyes.
    • Limit alcohol consumption, as drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can cause protein aggregation in the eyes, increasing the risk of cataracts. Try to limit alcohol intake to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men.

Here we are listing some food items that will promote healing and improve eye health:

    • Eat leafy green vegetables, such as spinach, kale, collard greens, and other leafy greens are rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which can help protect your eyes from damage and improve visual function.
    • Add fatty fish, including salmon, tuna, mackerel, etc., which are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and promote eye health.
    • Citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and other citrus fruits that are rich in vitamin C, can help protect your eyes from damage and improve visual function.
    • Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds are rich in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids and help reduce inflammation and improve eye health.
    • Carrots are an excellent source of beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body and can help improve visual function.
    • Eggs are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as vitamins A and E, which can help protect your eyes from damage and promote eye health.
    • Take whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and other whole grains that are rich in vitamin E and zinc, which can help reduce inflammation and support overall eye health.

The patient can ask the eye doctor or consult a dietitian to get clarity on which foods are most beneficial to improve eye health after cataract treatment.

Lifestyle Changes Recommended After Cataract Surgery

Here are some lifestyle changes that are usually recommended by the doctor after cataract surgery:

    • Avoid Strenuous Activities: For the first few days after surgery, the patient will be advised to avoid any strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, bending, or exercising. It is also important to avoid rubbing the eyes to prevent infection or injury.
    • Use Eye Protection: The patient is advised to wear an eye shield or protective glasses while sleeping or during activities that could injure the treated eye.
    • Use Prescribed Eye Drops: The surgeon will prescribe eye drops to use after surgery to help prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. It’s essential to use these drops as directed.
    • Attend Follow-up Appointments: You will need to attend follow-up appointments with the surgeon to ensure that the treated eye is healing correctly and that the vision is improving as expected.
    • Wear Sunglasses: After cataract surgery, the treated eye may be more sensitive to light. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection can help protect the eye from harmful rays.
    • Avoid Swimming and Hot Tubs: For the first few weeks after surgery, the patient should strictly avoid swimming and hot tubs. The water in pools and hot tubs usually contains chemicals like chlorine which can cause irritation and infection in the eyes.
    • Quit Smoking: Smoking impairs healing abilities by narrowing the blood vessels and restricting blood flow. Thus, the patient is advised to quit smoking or at least try to avoid it during the recovery period.

Following these lifestyle changes can help promote a smooth recovery and reduce the risk of complications after cataract surgery.

Eye Exercises That Are Helpful After Cataract Surgery

After cataract surgery, it’s essential to give your eyes time to heal and recover. While there are no specific eye exercises that are recommended after cataract surgery, some general exercises

can be helpful in promoting eye health and reducing the risk of complications. Here are a few exercises that patients may find helpful:

    • Blinking: Blinking frequently can help keep the eyes lubricated and reduce dryness, which is common after cataract surgery. Try to blink every few seconds, especially when reading or using a computer.
    • Eye Rotations: Slowly move the eyes in a circular motion, looking up, down, left, and right. This can help improve eye mobility and reduce strain.
    • Focusing: Hold a small object, such as a pen or pencil, at arm’s length and focus on it for a few seconds. Then, slowly bring the object closer to the face while maintaining focus. Repeat this exercise several times a day.
    • Palming: Rub palms together to generate heat, and then place them over your eyes, with your fingers overlapping on your forehead. Close your eyes and relax for a few minutes. This exercise can help reduce eye strain and promote relaxation.

Remember not to strain or put pressure on the eyes. If one or both eyes hurt while performing these exercises, stop immediately.

    • Blink frequently to keep the eyes lubricated and reduce dryness, which is common after cataract surgery.
    • Practice good hygiene, including washing hands frequently and avoiding touching the eyes.
    • Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet to support overall health and promote eye health.

    Don’ts:

    • Don’t rub the eyes, as this can increase the risk of infection or injury.
