  • What is a Toric Lens?

Technically, a toric lens is an intraocular lens that has different optical power and focal length with two orientations that are perpendicular to each other. One of the lens surfaces is shaped like a “cap” from a torus, from which the name of the lens is derived. The other surface is spherical. Both these surfaces combine to behave as a spherical lens and a cylindrical lens addressing all refractive errors simultaneously.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

    Commonly Available Toric IOLs

Standard toric IOLs have 1.5 D to 6.0 D cylindrical power available. Typically, they are used to address regular corneal astigmatism from .75 D to 4.75 D. To achieve higher cylindrical power, customized IOLs are made. Toric IOLs are available in both monofocal and multifocal lenses

    Monofocal Toric Lens

    • AcrySof Toric IOL– It is a one-piece hydrophobic acrylic lens that can correct up to +4.5 D corneal astigmatism. The spherical range is 6 to 30 D.
    • Hoya iSert Toric 351- It is a hydrophobic acrylic lens with PMMA haptics. It covers spherical power from +10 D to +30 D and cylindrical power from +1.5 D to +6 D.
    • Staar Toric IOL– It is a silicone intraocular lens that can correct spherical power of 9.5 D to 28.5 D and a cylindrical power of 1.2 D to 3.5 D.
    • AMO Tecnis Toric IOL, Toric IOL II- It is a one-piece aspheric hydrophobic acrylic IOL that can correct astigmatism from 0.75 D to 3.62 D.

    Multifocal Toric Lens

    • TECNIS Symfony Toric- It is a biconvex lens with an anterior toric aspheric surface. It can address cylindrical power from 1.5 D to 3.75 D.
    • AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR®- This hydrophobic lens can address a spherical power of +6.0 D to +34 D and a cylindrical power of 1 to 3 D.
    • EnVista toric IOL- This aspheric aberration-free biconvex lens has a posterior toric surface with cylindrical power from +1.25 to +5.75 D.
    • Trulign Toric IOL- This is a modified haptic aspheric silicone accommodating IOL. It can correct spherical power from 10 D to 33 D.

Risks & Complications of Toric Cataract Lens

Along with the risks associated with cataract extraction and implantation of the IOL, there are a few other potential complications that can arise.

    • Astigmatism may get overcorrected or undercorrected.
    • The toric lens may rotate off-axis.
    • The lens may get dislocated.
    • The retina may get detached.

    Ideal Candidate for Toric Lens

Before implanting a toric lens, the doctor considers the following factors whether it is the best option for the patient-

    • The patient must not have irregular astigmatism.
    • The patient must not have severe dry eye syndrome or any other underlying medical condition that can compromise the results of cataract surgery.
    • The patient must have realistic expectations from the IOL implantation procedure.
    • Astigmatism in the patient’s eye must be greater than 1.0 D

    Benefits of Toric Lens

    • The patient enjoys clearer distance vision without distortion.
    • With a multifocal toric lens, pre-existing astigmatism can be corrected to allow the patient to see clearly nearby, intermediate, and distant.
    • They are designed in such a way that they only move along the vertical axis of the cornea’s orientation.
    • Many toric lenses come with blue light protection to prevent progressive damage to the retina. They also offer protection from UV rays and fluorescent light.

Frequently Asked Questions about Toric Lens for Cataract

How much does a toric cataract lens cost in India?

On average, the cost of a toric lens ranges from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 70,000 approx. They are also available in monofocal and multifocal lenses, which might increase the cost.

Is the cost of a toric lens covered by health insurance?

In general, only the standard cataract lens cost is covered by health insurance which excludes toric lenses. The terms and conditions may vary for each patient depending on their policy and insurance providers. It is best to talk to the insurance provider.

How long it can take for the eyes to adjust with toric lenses?

It can take from 3 to 6 months for a patient’s eyes to adjust to the implanted toric lens. In case the patient’s eyes don’t accommodate, the doctor may have to exchange the lens.

Will I need eyeglasses to see after getting toric lenses?

Yes, you are likely to need eyeglasses for reading, and other close-up tasks as toric lens power start from 1 D only.

What is the success rate of the toric lens?

Implanting a toric lens is very successful, usually 95%, in patients. The lens allows the patients to see clearly with minimal reliance on other forms of corrective lenses.

what is recovery time of cataract surgery by toric lens ?

Recovery time after cataract surgery with a toric lens typically ranges from a few days to a few weeks, with most patients experiencing significant vision improvement within 1-2 weeks. For more details kindly refer – recovery after cataract surgery
