Are you going through any of these symptoms?

When is treatment required for chronic sinusitis?

Surgery is an option for patients with chronic sinusitis who have been bothered by the condition for more than 12 weeks. The procedure involves removing tissue and bone affected by sinusitis and fixing structural problems. The sinuses can be accessed through the nose with an endoscope and tiny surgical instruments that remove tissue and bone affected by sinus disease. Surgery may also help you breathe better through your nose.

What happens in chronic sinusitis treatment?

Doctors will try to treat sinusitis with medications and conservative treatments whenever possible. Here’re some approaches to treating sinusitis:

    Medications:

    • Nasal sprays and solutions help prevent and treat inflammation or nasal congestion.
    • Saline nasal irrigation rinses the irritants and allergies.
    • Anti-allergy medications if allergies cause sinusitis.
    • Anti-fungal treatment if infections are due to fungi.

    Antibiotics:

Your surgeon may recommend antibiotics if bacteria cause your sinusitis.

    Immunotherapy

Sinusitis caused by allergies might be treated with allergy shots (immunotherapy), which decrease the body’s reaction to specific allergens.

    Surgery

When sinusitis doesn’t respond to conservative methods and turns chronic, surgery becomes essential. Surgery options for chronic sinusitis include:

Endoscopic sinus surgery: A thin camera and light tube are inserted into your sinuses to check for polyps, mucus, or other obstructions. Your doctor may then remove the blockage. To help the patient breathe better, the doctor may also increase the space in the sinuses.

Deviated septum surgery (septoplasty) or nose surgery (rhinoplasty): The doctor reshapes the wall between your nostrils by straightening out or expanding your nose tissue. Doing this allows the patient to breathe more easily out of both nostrils.

How to prepare for chronic sinusitis treatment?

Your surgeon will recommend undergoing a preoperative examination to ensure that you are compatible with the procedure and that you won’t have any complications.

Here are some common instructions your surgeon may provide to help you prepare for the surgery.

    1. Avoid smoking, tobacco, and alcohol, as these may lead to tissue scarring and make your sinusitis worse.
    2. Stop taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, etc. as they may cause excessive bleeding during or after the surgery.
    3. Don’t eat or drink anything starting at least 6 hours before the surgery. It can creact adversely with anesthesia.
    4. Make sure that you bring an attendant along. .
    5. Collect all the important papers, such as insurance documents, identity proof, etc., and keep them with you during hospitalization.

How to recover after chronic sinusitis treatment?

You will receive some instructions from your surgeon following sinusitis surgery that will help you recover more quickly and feel better. Some of the suggestions are mentioned below:

    • Rinse your nose with the nasal saline spray every two to three hours after surgery.
    • Begin sinus irrigation with the sinus rinse kits to eliminate remaining debris.
    • It is normal to have a bloody discharge for a few days following the treatment, but if you suffer severe bleeding, keep your head raised and wipe your nose with tissue or cotton.
    • If you experience sinus pressure following surgery, just take the medicines prescribed by your doctor. Aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen should be avoided.
    • It is natural to feel fatigued during the recuperation process; rest as needed.
    • Avoid vigorous activities such as weightlifting, jogging, and so on, as they might induce bleeding.

Risks and complications associated with chronic sinusitis treatment

As with any surgery, there are some risks and complications associated with sinusitis surgery, including:

    • Excessive Bleeding: Minor bleeding is normal and expected during the surgery. In rare cases, excessive bleeding may occur, and your surgeon may have to pause the surgery.
    • Infection: You are at a risk of infection caused by any medical equipment. To reduce the risk, your surgeon will suggest some antibiotics immediately after the surgery.
    • Cerebrospinal fluid leak: The surgeon works on the ethmoid bone during the procedure. In case the bone gets injured it can result in CSF leakage. This is a very rare complication associated with the surgery.
    • Effect on eyes: The sinus is located close to the eyes.  In rare cases, eye injuries can occur.
    • Other risks may include changes in the sense of your smell.
