Is Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment Covered under Insurance?

In most cases, the treatment for diabetic retinopathy is covered by insurance health insurance when the condition has become symptomatic. The patient must have the following symptoms-

  • Spots or dark strings floating in the vision
  • Blurred and fluctuating vision
  • Dark or empty areas in the visual field
  • Vision loss

In early stages, diabetic retinopathy usually doesn’t cause any symptoms, which makes the condition harder to diagnose. Once the condition advances to the severe stage, surgery becomes a necessity, and all types of surgical treatment for diabetic retinopathy are covered by health insurance.

How to Get a Health Insurance Claim for Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment?

The policyholder can claim health insurance in two ways- cashless and claim. The process to file an insurance claim is explained below in detail.

Cashless Claim

This type of claim can only be filed by the policyholder while seeking treatment at a network hospital of the insurance company.

  • Intimate the insurance provider about the treatment.
  • Provide the insurance ID or card at the hospital’s TPA (third-party administrator) desk 2-5 days prior to the surgery.
  • The TPA will provide the cashless claim form that the patient needs to fill and sign. Submit the form at the TPA desk.
  • The TPA team will further inform the insurance company, submit the claim form, and provide the necessary medical records.
  • The insurance company will validate the documents and provide approval of an amount that is viable. The co-pay clause and/or claim limitation may be applicable for the treatment, due to which there may be restrictions over the amount that can be claimed.
  • The patient will receive the approval through an email or text message.

The hospital bills will be settled directly between the insurance company and the hospital. If the claim is denied, the patient will be intimated about the same and can file a reimbursement claim request.

Reimbursement Claim

The reimbursement insurance claim allows the patient to get compensation for the amount of money already paid during the treatment. This type of claim is availed by the patients while seeking treatment at a non-empanelled hospital of the insurance company.

  • Inform the insurance company about the treatment within 48 hours of hospitalization.
  • Get the reimbursement claim form and submit it within 30 days of discharge from the hospital.
  • Submit original copies of all medical reports, bills, discharge summary, prescriptions, etc., with the claim form.
  • The insurance company will verify the documents and issue a cheque in the policyholder’s name. In some claims, the amount is credited to the policyholder’s bank account.

The reimbursement claim may take around 14 to 21 days to settle. If the patient delays filing the claim 30 days after the surgery, the insurer won’t be liable to provide any compensation for the treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions about Diabetic Retinopathy Surgery Insurance Cover

When can my insurance claim get rejected?

An individual’s claim request can get rejected in the following cases-  Due to non-disclosures, partial disclosure, or wrong disclosure of important details, such as age, profession, income, major ailments, or pre-existing medical condition.  The policy has a waiting period clause for the required treatment, which is not over yet.  The documents submitted with the claim form are incomplete or falsified.  In all these scenarios, the insurance company will reject the claim. That’s why it’s always advised that the form should be filled promptly and specifically before submission.

Which documents are required to file an insurance claim?

To ensure that your claim request is not denied, keep the following documents in hand and submit them as required-  Health card/e-card issued at the time of policy purchase The insurance policy number  KYC documents  Name of the policyholder  Name and address of the insured person for whom the request is being made Nature of the illness, injury, treatment, or surgery required Name and address of the attending medical practitioners Hospital or clinic where the surgery will be performed Date of admission  Consultation papers, medical records, and diagnostic tests report  Admission note  Medical practitioner certificate stating the illness

Can I claim health insurance multiple times for diabetic retinopathy treatment?

Yes, you can claim health insurance multiple times for diabetic retinopathy treatment. The condition cannot be cured, and there are high chances of recurrence if diabetes is not controlled properly. Thus, the patient is likely to need surgical treatment again. One thing to note is that most health insurance policies put a limit on the sum insured that can be claimed instead of the number of times the policy can be claimed. So, as long as the sum insured is not claimed entirely, you can file another claim to cover the treatment expenses to a maximum extent.

Which expenses are not covered by health insurance?

Health insurance policies usually have exclusions for expenses that incur during the treatment. These expenses include-  Post-surgery prescribed medications and eye drops  Diagnostic tests are done before and after the surgery  Prescription glasses, if any  Post-surgery follow-up consultations
