Diagnostic tests before the D&E procedure

Before performing the surgery doctor suggests a few diagnostic tests to find possible problems that might complicate the surgery.

  • Endometrial biopsy- The doctor recommends this test to to check for endometrial intraepithelial hyperplasia- a precancerous condition, uterine polyps and uterine cancer. In this test doctor first collect the tissue sample from the lining of your uterus and send the sample to the laboratory for testing.
  • Blood test- It is usually performed to examine your health condition and determine the signs and symptoms of any infection or the functioning of a specific organ.

What happens before the D&E procedure?

Before performing the D&E procedure, the doctor will prepare your cervix for the D&E procedure. Some of the common ways to open the cervix before the procedure-

  • Laminaria- These are thin sticks that are placed in your cervix the day before the procedure. These dilators help in extracting moisture from your reproductive area and slowly widen the cervix. These sticks are usually placed in your cervix overnight. They are removed before the D&E procedure.
  • Misoprostol- This medicine can be taken by itself or given after laminaria. It is either taken by mouth or placed in the vagina to increase the effectiveness of the medicine. It can cause mild side effects like- nausea, chills and cramps.

What happens during the D&E procedure?

Before performing the D&E procedure, your healthcare provider will first remove the laminaria dilators. After that doctor gives local anaesthesia, such as lidocaine, to reduce the pain during the procedure. In some cases, the cervix is further dilated with a rigid dilator instrument  After that surgeon uses a surgical instrument called a curette. Currete is a sharp instrument or suction device used to evacuate the fetus, placenta and other tissue. The complete procedure will take about 15-30 minutes. Some women experience uterine cramping afterwards. After the D&E procedure, you will stay at the doctor’s office for about 30 minutes to make sure you do not have heavy bleeding.
