What Is DJ Stent Removal Procedure?

A DJ stent or Double-J stent is a soft and hollow tube made of plastic, which is placed temporarily into the ureter after a kidney stones surgery. A stent may be placed for several reasons, such as to reduce sharp pain caused by a stone, allow drainage, and to help the kidneys function properly. A double-J stent is a unique stent with curved ends, which prevent it from slipping into the bladder or the kidneys.

A DJ stent is placed right after the surgery. However, it is removed after 6 weeks or 6 months of the surgery, depending upon the case. In some cases, the lifespan of the stent ends and a replacement might be required. An unattended or expired DJ stent can increase the risk of the following:

  • Fragmentation of the stent
  • Obstruction in urine flow
  • Stone entering the bladder
  • Stent migration, along with bleeding, infections, etc.

To avert these complications, it is advisable to get a DJ stent removed in time.

  • Flexible Removal Of DJ stent: Flexible Removal Of DJ Stent: In this method, the DJ stent is removed with the help of a fiberoptic endoscope. The patient has to remain in a lying position throughout. It accompanies mild burning and discomfort, but it’s manageable. Also, the procedure only takes 2 to 3 minutes.

A DJ stent removal procedure is performed in the following steps:

  • The patient is made to lie down on the table in a lithotomy position.

Risks of DJ Stent removal

DJ Stent removal is a relatively safe procedure, and the risk of complications and side effects is pretty low. However, anyone undergoing this procedure must be aware of the potential risks and complications associated with it. Here are some possible risks of DJ stent removal procedure:

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Mild pain and discomfort in the operated area and/or below the rib cage, sides of the waist, and the back.
  • Trauma to the urinary tract and urinary tract infections. However, these complications are very low and generally occur due to improper placement or removal of the DJ stent.

Kidney Stent Removal & Ureteral Stent Removal

Kidney stent removal and ureteral stent removal are both procedures aimed at removing stents placed in the urinary tract, but they target different parts of the tract:

1. Kidney Stent Removal:

  • A kidney stent is a thin tube inserted into the ureter to ensure urine flow from the kidney to the bladder.
  • Kidney stent removal involves removing the stent from the kidney, typically performed after kidney stone treatment or surgical procedures affecting the urinary tract.
  • The procedure is usually done under local anesthesia or sedation, and a cystoscope is inserted into the bladder to grasp and remove the stent.

2. Ureteral Stent Removal:

  • A ureteral stent is a similar tube inserted into the ureter to maintain urine flow, often used after procedures like ureteroscopy or surgery for kidney stones.
  • Ureteral stent removal involves removing the stent from the ureter, which connects the kidney to the bladder.
  • Like kidney stent removal, the procedure is typically performed using a cystoscope under local anesthesia or sedation, with the stent grasped and pulled out through the urethra.
