Double Chin Removal Recovery- An Overview

In the initial 3-5 days after surgery, the patients recover well enough to resume basic activities. However, the complete recovery will take around 2 to 4 weeks. The recovery duration will be different for each patient depending on the extent of modification, the technique used, and the individual’s healing abilities.

If chin liposuction is performed, the recovery may take 3-4 weeks. In case submentoplasty is performed, the patient may recover within 2-3 weeks. If a neck lift is performed to remove the double chin, the full recovery may take 4 to 6 weeks. The doctor will give an estimate of the recovery duration to the patient while planning the surgery and also provide detailed instructions to help him/her recover faster.

Week-to-week Recovery Timeline After Double Chin Surgery

The general recovery timeline patients can expect after double chin removal is given below-

Week 1:

  • The patient will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area, which is normal after surgery.
  • The doctor will advise the patient to wear a headwrap or bandage around the neck and jaw area to help reduce swelling and aid in the healing process.
  • Avoid strenuous activities and follow the surgeon’s instructions for postoperative care and medication.

Week 2:

  • Swelling and bruising should begin to subside, but the patient may still experience some discomfort and tightness in the treated area.
  • The surgeon may advise to start massaging the treated area to help with lymphatic drainage and reduce swelling.
  • The patient can resume work and other basic activities, but strenuous activities should still be avoided.
  • The patient can take off the headwrap and start moving the neck. But swift movements should be avoided.
  • The patient needs to continue the pain medications, anti-inflammatory medications, and others as directed.

Week 3:

  • Swelling and bruising should continue to decrease, and the patient may start to see some noticeable improvement in the treated area.
  • There might still be some mild discomfort and tightness, but this should gradually improve.
  • The surgeon may advise the patient to start doing light exercises and activities.

Week 4:

  • The patient should start to see significant improvement in the treated area, and the swelling and bruising will be unnoticeable.
  • The discomfort or tightness around the chin and neck will continue to improve.
  • The surgeon may advise the patient to resume normal activities and exercise routine.

The patient should see the final results in the upcoming weeks. The doctor may advise using the headwrap or chin wrap for a longer period if the patients don’t have ideal skin elasticity.

Diet to Follow After Double Chin Removal

It is important to follow a healthy and balanced diet that can help support the healing process and promote optimal recovery. Here are some general dietary guidelines to follow after double chin removal surgery:

  • Add lean proteins such as chicken, turkey, fish, tofu, and legumes to help support tissue repair and recovery.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to help reduce inflammation and promote healing.
  • Consume whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, and whole-wheat bread to provide essential nutrients and energy.
  • Include low-fat dairy products such as skim milk, yogurt, and cheese to help meet calcium needs and promote bone health.
  • Take healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil to support skin health and provide essential fatty acids.
  • Avoid processed and high-sodium foods that can increase swelling and inflammation.
  • Reduce the intake of sugary foods and drinks that can slow down the healing process and negatively impact the immune system.
  • Try to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as they can dehydrate the body and interfere with healing.
  • Don’t eat spicy or acidic foods that can cause discomfort and irritation in the treated area.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids throughout the day.

It’ll be best to consult a dietitian to create a detailed meal plan during the recovery period.

Lifestyle Changes Recommended After Double Chin Removal Surgery

To maximize the results of double chin removal surgery and promote healing, the doctor may recommend the following lifestyle changes:

  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption, as these habits can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of complications. Alcohol can also cause dehydration in the body.
  • Follow a healthy and balanced diet that is rich in nutrients can help promote healing and reduce inflammation. Avoid processed foods, sugary foods, and high-sodium foods that can increase swelling and inflammation.
  • Get enough sleep as it improves the blood flow to help the muscles heal. Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
  • Avoid strenuous activities or any activity that can put a strain on the neck or cause excessive sweating for at least 4-6 weeks after surgery. This includes heavy lifting, intense exercise, and sports.
  • Follow the surgeon’s instructions for postoperative care, including how to care for the incision site, what medications to take, and when to follow up with the surgeon.

Exercises to Perform After Double Chin Removal

Typically, patients are not allowed to exercise for 2-3 weeks after surgery. Once the wound has healed, the surgeon may recommend the following exercises to tone and strengthen the neck muscles and jawline.

  • Neck stretches: Gently tilt the head back and look up at the ceiling, then return to the starting position. Repeat this motion several times. Then, gently tilt the head to the right, hold for a few seconds, and return to the starting position. Repeat on the left side.
  • Chin tucks: Sit or stand with the shoulders relaxed. Slowly draw your chin in toward the neck as if making a double chin. Hold for a few seconds, and then release.
  • Tongue press: Place the tongue against the roof of the mouth and press firmly. Hold for a few seconds, and then release.
  • Platysma exercises: Sit or stand with the shoulders relaxed and the head tilted back slightly. Tighten the muscles in the neck and jawline and hold for a few seconds before releasing.
  • Resistance exercises: Place a hand under the chin and apply gentle resistance while pressing the chin down. Hold for a few seconds, and then release.

The doctor will provide guidance regarding the activities and exercises that are safe to perform after double chin surgery.
