  • What is Embryo or Frozen Embryo Transfer?

Embryo transfer is the final step in the IVF process. This step involves placing the fertilized egg or embryo into the woman’s uterus to allow embryo implantation, fetus development, and healthy pregnancy. An embryo transfer is generally performed 5 to 6 days after the egg retrieval process in IVF.

The fertility specialists can use any of the following types of embryos for this process:

    • Fresh embryo
    • Frozen embryo
    • Blastocyst

    When is embryo transfer needed?

Fertility specialists suggest IVF and embryo transfer when couples can not conceive naturally. Some other reasons that make getting an embryo transfer a good choice include:

    • Damage or blockage in the fallopian tubes: Fallopian tubes offer the pathway to embryos to travel and reach the uterus. If they get damaged or scarred, they can make it difficult for sperm to reach the eggs.
    • Ovulation disorders: If the ovulation cycle in a woman is disturbed, i.e. it is infrequent, then the number of eggs produced is fewer. This causes difficulty in natural fertilization.
    • Endometriosis: In this condition, the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside the uterus. This condition affects the functioning of the female reproductive system and a woman’s ability to conceive naturally.
    • Uterine fibroids: Fibroids are benign and small tumors that flare up on the walls of the uterus. They can affect an egg’s ability to attach to the uterus, reducing pregnancy chances.
    • Premature ovarian failure: As the name suggests, this condition involves a hampered functioning of the ovaries. Due to this condition, the ovaries produce abnormal amounts of estrogen and even release eggs regularly.
    • Genetic disorders: Some generic conditions can prevent natural pregnancy.
    • Issues with sperm production: Low sperm production, poor movement of the sperm, semen abnormalities, and damage to the testes are some factors that can affect natural fertilization.

How is Embryo transfer or Frozen Embryo Transfer performed?

Embryo transfer is a relatively pain-free procedure performed in a hospital or fertility clinic. This procedure is performed after the fertilization process, generally 5 days after the egg retrieval process in IVF. It is performed in the following steps:

    • The patient receives a mild sedative to ensure that she experiences no pain or discomfort during the procedure.
    • Once the patient is sedated, the doctor inserts a catheter- a long, thin, and flexible tube, into the uterus, through your vagina and cervix.
    • With the help of a syringe, the doctor transfers an embryo or multiple embryos to your uterus and allows them to implant in the lining of the uterus.
    • A pregnancy test is performed a week after the procedure.

    What happens after Embryo transfer?

Women are allowed to go back on the same day after embryo transfer. However, since the ovaries are enlarged, the fertility specialist might ask them to avoid heavy workouts, lifting weights, and exerting themselves as it might cause complications in the process. Some women might experience the following side effects:

    • Mild cramping
    • Passing small amounts of blood or clear fluid due to the cervical swabbing process, which is done before embryo transfer.
    • Tenderness in the breast due to increased estrogen levels.
    • Bloating and constipation

In general, these side effects are short-lived and subside over time. However, if they persist, consult a doctor to get checked for an infection, twisted ovaries, or other severe conditions.

Almost a week after embryo transfer, the fertility specialist will take a sample of your blood to check for pregnancy. The doctor will move on to prenatal care if it comes out positive. However, if it’s negative, the doctor will stop your progesterone medicine and might ask you to attempt another cycle of IVF and embryo transfer.

Risks and Precautions of Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer procedure accompanies very few risks, and most patients can get back to their routine without much discomfort. Some risks may be attributed to increased hormonal stimulation, which can lead to blood clots or blocking of a blood vessel.

In some cases, women can experience some bleeding, an increase in vaginal discharge, and infections. Complications can also occur due to anaesthesia, especially if the patient is allergic to it. Contrary to common misconception, it does not increase your chances of miscarriage, and the risk of miscarriage is just as much as natural conception.

The only major complication associated with embryo transfer is increased chances of multiple pregnancies. It can further lead to an increased risk of disabilities in children and stillbirth.

    FAQs Around Embryo Transfer Procedures

How painful is an embryo transfer procedure?

The embryo transfer procedure is generally very comfortable and does not cause pain or discomfort to the patient. The procedure is performed under anaesthesia. Some patients might experience mild cramping or pain after the procedure, which goes away on its own.

Are there any side effects of an embryo or frozen embryo transfer procedure?

While the risk of complications and side effects after the embryo transfer procedure is quite low, some patients might experience the following side effects:

    • Minor bleeding or an increase in vaginal discharge
    • Breast tenderness
    • Mild cramping and discomfort
    • Constipation
    • Increased fatigue
    • Bruising at the site of injection

How many embryos are transferred in this procedure?

It depends. The doctors generally use one or two embryos in the case of younger patients and as many as four embryos in case of women who are in their 30s or 40s for best results.

What are some factors that affect the chances of successful IVF and embryo transfer?

Several factors contribute to the success or failure of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, including:

    • Age of the mother
    • Status of the embryos
    • Reproductive history
    • Cause of infertility
    • Lifestyle habits

How successful is an embryo transfer procedure?

The success of the embryo transfer procedure typically depends upon the transfer method. According to research published in the International Journal of Reproductive Medicine, the chances of a successful pregnancy with fresh embryo transfer are 23%, while that with frozen embryo transfer is 18%.

Are frozen embryo transfers more successful?

Although there are no definite deciding factors, many fertility specialists indicate that frozen embryo transfers provide a higher success of successful pregnancy in comparison to using fresh embryos, during IVF.
