  • What is Epigastric Hernia?

An Epigastric Hernia is a lump formed between the belly button line and sternum (a line between the breast) that causes pain. The abdominal cavity is home to your intestines and other structures. An abdominal wall consists of four layers to protect these organs.

A hernia in the abdomen occurs when fat pushes out through a weakness between the belly button and the sternum. Whenever fat presses on the abdominal wall, it causes pain.

An epigastric hernia is common in adults and children both. Among all the hernias, 2-3% are epigastric hernias. Umbilical and epigastric hernias, on the other hand, can be diagnosed or developed later in childhood or adulthood. While they rarely cause major complications when they develop later in life, they must be surgically repaired — especially in adults.

What are the causes and symptoms of an Epigastric Hernia?

It is common for Epigastric Hernia to exist from birth. Incomplete closure of abdominal tissues during development or weakness in abdominal wall muscles can cause it to form.

Some other  factors that are responsible for causing epigastric hernia include:

    • Obesity
    • Pregnancy
    • Coughing fits
    • Heavy lifting
    • Physical labor
    • Intensive training or sports

Sometimes, people having epigastric hernia may not feel any symptoms. Many people are unaware of their epigastric hernias during their childhood and adolescence. However, children may experience the symptoms from a very young age. Some common symptoms may include:

    • Pain
    • Tenderness
    • A bump in the abdomen that can be seen or felt.

Some actions like heavy exercise, stretching, straining, weight lifting, screaming, crying, or having a bowel movement may also cause extreme pain. Some epigastric hernias are reducible and may come and go over time.

What is the treatment of Epigastric Hernia?

Usually hernias do not heal on their own and surgery is the only option to treat them. If the hernia is repaired, symptoms will be alleviated and complications, such as tissue damage, will be reduced.

    Diagnosis

Here are some diagnostic tests for epigastric hernia that your surgeon will most likely prescribe:

    • Blood tests
    • A cardiogram
    • A chest X-ray

    Treatment

    Before Surgery

Before surgery, the doctor may advise the patient to lose weight or quit smoking in order to reduce any risk factors.

If medically necessary, an individual may be admitted the day before surgery or required to stay in the hospital the night after surgery, or both. In most cases, a patient will be admitted on the day of surgery and released that evening.

Epigastric hernia surgery can be performed as an inpatient or outpatient procedure. Usually all the procedures are performed under general or local anesthesia. It usually takes around 30 minutes to complete the procedure.

The surgery can be performed by three approaches.

    • Open epigastric hernia repair: This entails making an incision over the hernia site and repositioning the bulging tissue or organ. The hole is then closed with sutures or a combination of sutures and plastic mesh by the surgeon.
    • Laparoscopic epigastric hernia repair: This is a minimally-invasive procedure in which the hernia is repaired using small incisions, a tiny video camera, special surgical tools, and a piece of plastic mesh.
    • Robotic epigastric hernia repair: This surgery is very similar to laparoscopic repair surgery. Your surgeon will use robot-assisted technology to precisely guide the movements of the surgical tools during this treatment.

How to prepare for Epigastric Hernia treatment?

If you have any medical issues, you must notify your doctor and follow any recommendations. To prepare for epigastric hernia surgery, your surgeon may give you the following standard instructions:

    • Avoid smoking, drinking, and using tobacco before surgery. It may result in tissue scarring and complicate your recovery.
    • Take no blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, warfarin, or herbal supplements. It may result in excessive bleeding during surgery.
    • If you are allergic to any medication, anesthesia, or medical equipment, you must notify your doctor.
    • You must be completely informed about your condition, treatment, expected outcomes, and risks associated with the procedures.
    • Wear no makeup, jewellery, or other accessories on the day of surgery.
    • Prepare all of your insurance documents before your surgery.
    • Keep someone with you during your hospital stay.
    • Shave your operation site before the procedure to keep it clean and prevent infections.

How to recover after Epigastric Hernia treatment?

Self-care at home after surgery is critical for a quick recovery. Mild exercises, healthy eating, wound care, and so on are all part of it. Here are some ideas to help you recover quickly after epigastric hernia treatment:

    Incision treatment

    • Maintain a clean incision site.
    • To keep your wound dry and prevent excessive bleeding, apply a sterile bandage.
    • Use the same bandage no more than once per day.

Physical activities include: Avoid strenuous activities for the first few weeks following surgery. Then, to avoid scarring, begin light exercises and walking.

Diet: Increase your protein and fibre intake. It aids in the healing of your body. Foods high in vitamins B, C, iron, and zinc can also help with recovery. Drink plenty of water and limit your caffeine intake to stay hydrated.

Medications: Take your medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Risks and complications of Epigastric Hernia treatment

Like all surgeries, epigastric surgeries also have some risks and complications. Some of them may include:

    • Enlarged hernia which can make the bowel movements painful
    • Extreme pain in the abdomen area
    • Constipation
    • Enlargement of the hernia which is even repaired with the help of mesh.
    • Bleeding
    • Extreme pain or discomfort
    • Infection or abscess at the surgical site
    • Scar marks on the incision site
    • Blood clotting in any of your organ
    • Lump developed which may not be a hernia
    • Mesh infection
    • Chest infection

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Is Epigastric Hernia serious?

An epigastric hernia can cause severe pain as well as other potentially serious issues that may necessitate emergency surgery.

Can you live with Epigastric Hernia?

Yes. It is possible to live with a hernia if it is not causing pain or discomfort.

How do you treat an Epigastric Hernia naturally?

Here are some suggestions to treat an epigastric hernia naturally:

    • Strenuous exercises should be avoided: Strenuous exercise or overexertion is one of the leading causes of hernia.
    • Cycling: Light cycling may be considered safe for people with smaller hernias, and it can also help to strengthen your muscles.
    • Walking
    • Swimming
    • Yoga
    • Meals should be small and light
    • Apply an ice pack
    • Diet rich in fibre

    Can an Epigastric Hernia burst?

Internal hernias can rupture internally, though this is uncommon. Coughing, lifting weights, straining with defecation, or other circumstances that increase intra-abdominal pressure can all cause a spontaneous rupture.

Is a hernia causing you to urinate more?

A patient’s bladder may become trapped within the hernia at times. If this occurs, you may experience urinary burning, frequent infections, bladder stones, and frequent urination.
