What is Fibroadenoma?

A fibroadenoma is a common type of benign breast lump in which a solid mass appears in the breast without pain or any other symptoms. This lump is usually pea-sized and can feel firm, smooth, and rubbery. The exact cause of fibroadenoma in breasts is unknown, but they are believed to be related to hormonal changes and menstrual cycles.

In most cases, breast fibroadenoma develops in women between the ages of 15 to 35. However, sometimes, they can also develop after 35 till menopause. Typically, a fibroadenoma is 1 inch or 2.5 cm in size, but it can get bigger over time. Fibroadenomas are of the following types:

  • Simple Fibroadenomas: These are the most common type of fibroadenomas. They are small and rarely grow or increase the risk of breast cancer. When examined under a microscope, the tissue composition looks uniform.
  • Complex Fibroadenomas: This type of breast fibroadenoma starts small and grows bigger over time. It can also press on the surrounding breast tissues. When a complex fibroadenoma is examined under a microscope, the tissue composition is irregular, and they can appear as cysts or calcifications.
  • Giant Fibroadenomas: A giant fibroadenoma is a quick-growing breast lump that can grow bigger than 2 inches (5 cm). When the lump becomes this large, they push the breast tissues aside.
  • Juvenile Fibroadenomas: This type of fibroadenoma is very common in young girls between the ages of 15 and 18. They develop randomly, and in most cases, they also shrink over time and disappear completely. But in others, they may persist for more than 8 months and require treatment.

In some cases, phyllodes tumors can be mistaken for fibroadenomas, but these two conditions are very different. While fibroadenomas grow at a slow pace, phyllodes tumors can grow rapidly. Generally, fibroadenomas or phyllodes tumors are benign, but there is always a possibility that these lumps are malignant (cancerous). That’s why women are always advised to keep an eye out for all types of breast lumps and seek timely treatment.

Fibroadenoma Diagnosis and Evaluations

Some women notice the breast lump while doing a self-exam. Others may notice it while taking a bath. They can also be found during a regular medical exam that includes imaging tests for breasts. Depending on the woman’s age, the following tests may be recommended for an accurate diagnosis.

  • Breast Ultrasound: This test uses sound waves to provide clear images of the breast tissues. This test is done for women who are younger than 30. The test will confirm the shape and size of the fibroadenoma and also show its composition to clarify whether the lump is fluid-filled or solid.
  • Mammography: Also called a breast mammogram, this test uses X-rays to clearly identify the margins of the fibroadenoma, as the composition is different than regular breast tissues. This method is not suitable for women younger than 30 as they have denser breast tissues, and it can be hard to differentiate between typical breast tissues and a fibroadenoma. Mammograms are done in women older than 30.
  • Tissue Biopsy: If the tissue composition of the fibroadenoma is abnormal, the doctor will recommend a biopsy, specifically, a core needle biopsy. A sample of the fibroadenoma tissues is taken to examine it precisely. It also confirms whether the lump is actually a fibroadenoma or phyllodes tumor. If the mass turns out to be cancerous, the doctor will discuss the treatment options with the patients accordingly.

Based on the results of the above-listed diagnostic tests, the most suitable fibroadenosis of breast treatment plan is proposed by the doctor.

Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment Options

Often, no treatment is needed for breast fibroadenoma, and they resolve on their own after some time. In other cases, especially if the fibroadenoma is growing rapidly, surgical treatment may be recommended to remove the breast lump.

If the surgeon recommends watchful waiting for fibroadenoma management, the patient will have to take regular follow-ups and get an ultrasound after 6 months or a year to look for changes in the shape and size of the lump.

The decision on whether surgery is the right option for fibroadenomas is made based on the following factors:

  • If the fibroadenoma affects the natural shape of the breast.
  • If the lump causes pain and discomfort.
  • If the doctor is concerned that the lump can be cancerous.
  • If the woman has a family history of breast cancer.
  • If the biopsy results are inconclusive and questionable.
  • If the lump is growing in size and is larger than 2 cm.

In all these scenarios, the doctor may recommend the following surgical treatment:

  • Lumpectomy or Excision Surgery: Commonly called excisional biopsy or excision surgery, this treatment procedure involves removing the fibrous tissues from the breast directly.
  • Vacuum-assisted Excision Biopsy: This treatment method involves making a small cut in the breast and inserting a probe connected to a vacuum device. The device is used to extract the fibroadenoma, and then the tissue is sent for further examination.
  • Cryoablation: This method involves using an ultrasound machine to visualize the fibroadenoma and a specialized tool called a cryoprobe that emits liquid nitrogen to freeze the tissues. Once these tissues die, the body’s immune system automatically.

Women who decide to get surgery should also be aware that new fibroadenomas can still form in the breasts, and the surgery can also change the shape and size of the breasts.

Breast Fibroadenoma Surgery Procedure

Depending on the method chosen for Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment, the exact steps will vary. Here are the general steps followed during the commonly performed procedures for fibroadenoma removal.

For Fibroadenoma Excision Surgery:

The excision surgery, medically termed lumpectomy, is performed in the following steps:

  • First, the patient is prepared for the surgery, and an IV line is inserted into the arm. The nurses will also give the patient a clean hospital gown to wear and take her to the operating room.
  • In the operating room, the breast is cleaned, and anesthesia is administered. Typically, general anesthesia is given to the patient that puts theA scalpel is used to carefully excise m to sleep. In some cases, local anesthesia with IV sedation can also be used.
  • An incision is made in the skin right above the fibroadenoma. The incision size will depend on the size and location of the fibroadenoma.
  • the fibroadenoma, and a small margin of healthy tissues is also removed to ensure complete removal of the lump.
  • After removing the lump, the leaking blood vessels are closed carefully. Then, the incision is closed using sutures or surgical tapes.
  • The patient is kept under observation until the effects of anesthesia wear off.
  • The excised lump is also sent to a lab for further examination and to confirm that the lump is benign.

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, the surgery will take around 40 to 60 minutes, and the patient may be discharged on the same day or kept under observation overnight. The patient is given post-op care instructions and a follow-up schedule.

For Fibroadenoma Cryoablation:

Cryoablation is a minimally invasive procedure to remove fibroadenomas. Its steps are explained below:

  • The breast is cleaned and sterilized, and local anesthesia is administered to numb the area. This ensures that the patient is comfortable and feels no pain during the procedure.
  • An ultrasound probe is used to visualize the lump and guide the cryoprobe.
  • A small incision is made in the skin above the lump, and the cryoprobe is inserted through it. The probe is guided with ultrasound to reach the lump.
  • The cryoprobe is activated, releasing liquid nitrogen into the lump, which drops the temperature significantly, resulting in the freezing of the fibrous tissues.
  • The freezing happens very quickly, and an ice ball forms around the fibroadenoma, which destroys the tissues within. The freezing process is controlled precisely to ensure that the surrounding healthy tissues are not damaged.
  • The frozen tissues are allowed to thaw, and the cryoprobe is extracted as usual. The frozen tissues are eliminated by the body naturally.
  • Once the procedure is complete, the incision is closed with a small bandage or adhesive tape/strip.

The patient is kept under observation as the effects of anesthesia wear off and is discharged shortly after giving detailed post-op care instructions and a follow-up schedule. Cryoablation of fibroadenomas takes around 30 to 60 minutes to complete.

Benefits of Breast Fibroadenoma Surgery

The benefits of undergoing breast fibroadenoma surgery are listed below:

  • Relief from Symptoms: Surgery can effectively relieve the symptoms, including pain and discomfort that are caused due to large fibroadenomas.
  • Definitive Diagnosis: After surgical removal of the fibroadenoma, the tissues can be carefully examined, which confirms whether the breast lump was benign or cancerous. It also helps to rule out other types of breast lumps that can be dangerous for the woman.
  • Peace of Mind: With Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment, the patient can get proper peace of mind knowing that the concerns about breast cancer are resolved, and the lump is also removed safely.
  • Cosmetic Benefits: When the fibroadenoma is large enough to affect the size and shape of the breast, surgical removal can restore the original shape and size of the breast. Many women choose to undergo fibroadenoma surgery solely for cosmetic reasons.
  • Prevention of Complications: Fibroadenomas are known to be sensitive to hormonal changes, and they can significantly grow in size during pregnancy and breastfeeding. They can sometimes also cause pain or increase the risk of new cyst formation in the breast. Surgery can prevent these issues from arising in the first place.

Fibroadenoma Surgery Cost in India

The cost of fibroadenoma surgery in India ranges from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 60,000. The price range can also be higher in case the size of the fibroadenoma is large or multiple fibroadenomas are present. Other key factors that influence the cost of Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment are:

  • The method chosen for fibroadenoma removal
  • Doctor’s and anesthetist’s fee
  • The choice of hospital (government or private)
  • Hospital-related expenses (admission, discharge, room rent, nursing, medical consumables, etc.)
  • Diagnostic tests and evaluations
  • Prescribed medications, post-op care, and follow-ups

Besides the above-listed expenses, patients may also need to refill their medicines and get a compression bra, and in some cases, patients may also need physical therapy, which can contribute to Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment costs. To get a specific estimate for you, call Pristyn Care and talk to our care coordinators.

Breast Fibroadenoma Surgery Recovery

The recovery after breast fibroadenoma surgery can take around 4 to 6 weeks. The exact duration will vary based on the extent of surgery, the technique used for removal, and the patient’s healing abilities. The general recovery timeline will be as follows:

  • In the first few days, the patient will feel mild to moderate pain and discomfort, which will be managed through medicines. The swelling will also start to appear in 2-3 days and will increase in the next couple of days. The patient will be advised to take complete rest.
  • After the first week, most patients can resume day-to-day activities, and the swelling and bruising in the breast will start to subside. The patient will be advised to continue wearing the compression garment/bra to support the breasts.
  • Within 2nd and 3rd week, patients can gradually resume work but need to avoid strenuous activities. The patient will also have to take follow-ups during the 2nd week to monitor the healing and adjust the medicines.
  • By the 4th week, most patients resume all activities, including exercises. The swelling and bruising will disappear almost completely, and the incisional wound will also start healing.

In the upcoming weeks, the patient will have to take another follow-up to discuss activities and methods to improve the surgical scar’s appearance.

Tips to Follow During the Recovery Period

The instructions or guidelines given by the doctor after fibroadenoma surgery determine how quickly the patient will be able to get back to her regular life. The general post-op care instructions are listed below:

  • Take the prescribed medicine, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines, painkillers, etc., as directed by the surgeon.
  • Change the dressings frequently and keep the incision site clean and dry to prevent infection.
  • Give the body enough time to recuperate and take ample rest. Avoid all strenuous activities during the initial days after surgery.
  • Wear the compression bra for the specified duration to manage swelling in the breasts.
  • Ease back into the daily activities and let pain be the guide to resume physical activities.
  • Eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet to improve the body’s healing abilities, and drink 6-8 glasses of water every day for proper hydration.
  • Keep an eye out for the signs of complications, such as fever, pus or blood discharge, persistent pain and swelling, etc. Report these signs to the doctor immediately.
  • Attend all the follow-up appointments to get proper guidance regarding wound care, diet, physical activities, the healing process, etc.

Undergoing any kind of breast surgery can be very challenging for the woman. They are also advised to take emotional support through friends, family members, or a professional to address the emotional challenges associated with fibroadenoma surgery.

Fibroadenoma Surgery Side Effects, Risks, and Complications

Usually, fibroadenoma surgery is safe, but some risks and complications can still arise during or after the surgery. Some side effects, risks, and complications that patients should be aware of are explained below:

  • Pain and discomfort can occur after the surgery, which is a natural response of the body when tissues experience trauma due to the incisions.
  • Swelling occurs as a normal inflammatory response, and bruising also happens when the capillaries and blood vessels present in the treated area suffer damage, and the blood leaks out of them.
  • Infection can occur during or after the surgery as the body is exposed to external contaminants, and bacteria can enter the body through the incision site. Even though a sterile environment is maintained, there is always a risk of infection.
  • Bleeding during surgery is normal as the blood vessels are cut to access the fibroadenoma. However, in some cases, excessive blood loss may happen, which may require intervention or blood transfusion.
  • Scarring is another unwanted side effect of surgical treatments. When the skin tissues suffer damage, scar tissues form as the natural healing process of the body. While most scars heal properly, in some cases, abnormal healing may occur, resulting in keloid or hypertrophic scars, which may need further intervention.
  • Changes in sensation in the breast may occur due to nerve damage, which can be temporary or permanent. In general, the damaged nerves regenerate over time, and the sensations return, but in some cases, the sensations may not return at all, resulting in permanent numbness.
  • Seroma (fluid accumulation) or hematoma (blood accumulation) may occur due to the disruption of the lymphatic system. While the accumulated blood or fluid may dissolve on its own, sometimes, they may require proper drainage.
  • Allergic reactions can also occur to anesthetic medicines, sutures, gloves, or other materials.
  • Recurrence of fibroadenomas can also occur even after they are surgically removed. The Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment cannot prevent the formation of new ones.

Even after the surgeon takes the necessary measures to reduce the risks and complications, they can still arise. The best way to reduce the risk of post-op complications is to adhere to the doctor’s instructions.

Various Methods of Fibroadenoma Treatment Without Surgery

As mentioned above, generally, fibroadenomas don’t require treatment. When they grow in size, the doctor may consider medicine for fibroadenoma that works by balancing the hormonal levels, as these lumps show sensitivity to male and female hormones. However, it should be noted that medical therapies or treatments are typically not approved for direct Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment. Still, these medicines are prescribed to maintain the hormonal balance and see if they work to shrink the fibroadenoma.

The fibroadenoma medical treatment options are:

  • Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): This medicine for fibroadenoma blocks the estrogen receptors that can reduce the size of the lump and the chances of new lump formation. Tamoxifen is the medicine that is generally prescribed.
  • Gondaotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) Agonists: This medicine alters the production of estrogen and progesterone in the body to see if they can shrink the fibroadenoma or even dissolve it.

The patient should keep in mind that these medical treatments are still being researched, and there is no proof to support their effectiveness and safety. Doctors carefully evaluate the patient’s health and only suggest these methods if there are no other options.

FAQs on Fibroadenoma Treatment

How to remove breast fibroadenoma naturally?

People in India often try various home remedies to treat breast lumps, but in the case of fibroadenoma, none of the suggested natural remedies can effectively remove or treat a fibroadenoma. Doctors usually advise observing the lump over time, and if it grows, surgery is recommended as the best removal method.

How can I book an appointment with Pristyn Care for fibroadenoma treatment?

To book an appointment with Pristyn Care, you can give us a call and talk to our care coordinators to discuss the date, time, and location. Or you can fill out the appointment form stating your concern and providing basic information. Our coordinators will get back to you shortly to discuss how and when you would like to get an appointment with an expert breast surgeon.

Is it possible to dissolve breast fibroadenoma?

There is no scientific evidence regarding any method that claims to dissolve fibroadenomas. Many people try hormonal therapy in the hopes that it may work to shrink or dissolve the fibroadenoma, but their efficacy and workability are still unclear.

Does health insurance cover Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment?

Generally, treatment for various types of breast lumps is covered under health insurance. However, the coverage rules may vary based on whether the condition is symptomatic or asymptomatic. If the lump is causing medical concerns, has abnormal composition, or is growing rapidly, the surgery is deemed a medical necessity, and its cost is covered. To learn more about the insurance coverage for fibroadenoma, it’ll be best to talk to the insurance provider.

Will Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment affect breastfeeding?

After surgical Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment, there is a possibility that the woman’s ability to breastfeed may be affected. Any surgery that is performed on the breast has the potential to damage the ducts that are responsible for milk production. If the size of the fibroadenoma is large and it is present very close to the milk ducts, the woman may not be able to breastfeed like before.

How long does it take to recover after fibroadenoma surgery?

The recovery after Fibroadenoma Breast Treatment can take anywhere between 4 to 6 weeks. Within a month, most patients resume all activities and return to their regular life, but the scar healing may take longer.

Can fibroadenomas come back after surgery?

Surgical removal of the existing fibroadenomas doesn’t affect the possibility of new mass formation. There is a chance that new fibrous masses may grow in the same breast or the other one. That’s why patients who develop fibroadenomas are advised to monitor their health, do a regular self-exam, and visit the doctor for imaging tests.

Will my breast shape change after fibroadenoma removal?

Having large-sized fibroadenomas can increase the size and shape of the affected breast. The removal will restore the original shape and size of the breast. Sometimes, the surgeon might need to excise extra margins to remove the lump properly. In such cases, the doctor will discuss the options to keep the breasts symmetrical.

Does fibroadenoma surgery leave scars on the breast?

Scarring is an inevitable and unwanted consequence of surgical fibroadenosis of breast treatment. There will be a scar in the breast, and its size will vary based on the fibroadenoma size. But over time, as the skin heals, the scar fades and often becomes almost unnoticeable.
