Recovery is a gradual process. It generally takes about six weeks for your anus to heal fully after anal fissure surgery, but most people can resume their normal activities, including work, within one to two weeks after their surgery.Â
Most people find that the pain and discomfort they were experiencing from their anal fissures before surgery disappeared within a few days of having their surgery. Many people also worry about their bowel movements after the surgery. While it is normal to experience some pain during bowel movements at first, the pain usually subsides after some time. It is also normal to see blood on the toilet paper after a bowel movement for the first few weeks.Â
Patients, after their surgery, are given a prescription for pain relievers or other medications and instructions on how to take them. Any excessive pain or bleeding should be reported to a healthcare provider instantly.Â

These exercises can help in proper recovery after your fissure surgery.
There are several different medicines a healthcare provider may suggest to the patient for a better recovery. It includes:
Laxatives are a kind of medicine that helps in easy defecation. Adults are generally prescribed bulk-forming laxative tablets after their fissure surgery. These work by helping the poop retain fluid, making it softer and less likely to dry out. Children are prescribed an osmotic laxative oral solution. This kind of laxative works by increasing the fluid in the bowels, which stimulates the body to poop.
If you have prolonged pain after defecation, your healthcare provider may suggest taking common painkillers, like paracetamol or ibuprofen. If you decide to take these medicines after the surgery, follow the dosage instructions on the packet.
Your healthcare provider may prescribe glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), an ointment applied to the anal canal, twice a day. GTN works by expanding vessels in and around the anus, boosting the blood supply to the surgical area and helping it heal faster. You will have to use GTN ointment for at least 4 weeks after the surgery.
Your healthcare provider may prescribe a topical anesthetic if you have severe anal pain after your fissure surgery. A topical medicine is one you rub directly into the affected area. Lidocaine is the most commonly prescribed topical anesthetic to enhance recovery after surgery. It comes in either a gel or an ointment and is only used for a short time (a few days).
Calcium channel blockers, like diltiazem, are a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). However, topical calcium channel blockers applied directly to the anus have also proved helpful in boosting recovery after fissure surgery. Topical calcium channel blockers relax the sphincter muscle and increase blood supply to the affected area. These blockers are considered as effective as GTN ointment for enhancing recovery and may be recommended if other medicines have not helped.
You can eat your normal diet after your fissure surgery. However, if your stomach is upset, try eating low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, and toast. In addition, drink plenty of fluids and eat high-fiber foods after your surgery.Â
You may do what you feel comfortable doing after your fissure surgery. However, do not sit for longer than 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Also, sit on a foam pillow but avoid rubber rings or donuts.Â
Avoid items like dairy products, red meat, spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and processed foods after your fissure surgery.
It is always better to eat brown rice after your surgery for a better recovery. Brown rice is highly rich in dietary fiber due to its unpolished outer layer. In addition, fiber helps improve bowel movements and assists in preventing and treating fissures.
Sleeping on your stomach and placing a pillow under your hips is always better to ease pain and discomfort. Also, a full body warm bath before going to bed is recommended for reducing pain levels and helping you fall asleep better.
