Recovery After Fissure Surgery

Recovery is a gradual process. It generally takes about six weeks for your anus to heal fully after anal fissure surgery, but most people can resume their normal activities, including work, within one to two weeks after their surgery.

Most people find that the pain and discomfort they were experiencing from their anal fissures before surgery disappeared within a few days of having their surgery. Many people also worry about their bowel movements after the surgery. While it is normal to experience some pain during bowel movements at first, the pain usually subsides after some time. It is also normal to see blood on the toilet paper after a bowel movement for the first few weeks.

Patients, after their surgery, are given a prescription for pain relievers or other medications and instructions on how to take them. Any excessive pain or bleeding should be reported to a healthcare provider instantly.

Post-Operative Care After Fissure Surgery

Some of the tips to follow post your fissure surgery include the following:

  • Rest when you feel tired. Getting sufficient sleep will help you recover properly after your surgery.
  • Try to walk each day. Begin by walking a little more than you did the day before. Walking enhances blood flow and helps prevent pneumonia and constipation.
  • Shower or take baths as usual. Pat the anal region dry with a towel when you are done.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions as to when you can drive again.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Consume a high-fiber diet.
  • If you are struggling with constipation, ask your doctor about taking a stool softener or mild laxative.
  • Take your pain medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Sit in around 10 centimeters of warm water (sitz bath) three times daily until the pain in the anal area reduces.
  • Use baby wipes instead of toilet paper. It is more comfortable and does not irritate the anus.
  • Avoid using fragranced soaps.
  • Try to manage your stress to help improve your digestive health.
  • Exercise regularly or indulge in mild physical activity to avoid stiffness and other health problems.
  • Make lifestyle changes like losing weight, maintaining a balanced diet, etc.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Diet To Follow During Recovery

  • You can consume your normal diet after your fissure surgery. If your stomach is upset, eat low-fat and bland foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, toast, and yogurt.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • You may see that your bowel movements are irregular after your fissure surgery. Therefore, try to avoid constipation and straining during bowel movements by taking a fiber supplement every day. If you have not had a bowel movement after a few days of your surgery, ask your doctor about taking a mild laxative.

Things To Avoid After A Fissure Surgery

Here are some points that should be avoided to reduce pain and discomfort after the surgery.

  • The patient should not consume anything for at least 4 hours after the operation. Later, begin with liquids and eat a bland diet (bananas, plain rice, applesauce, etc.).
  • Avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting, running, jogging, cycling, etc., for 1-2 weeks after your surgery.
  • Avoid straining for a longer time during bowel movements.
  • Avoid using dry toilet tissue. Instead, use wet cotton to clean yourself.
  • Stop eating foods that cause constipation, like cheese, white bread, dairy products, processed food, etc.
  • Avoid sitting for a long period.

Exercises/Asanas To Follow For A Better Recovery

These exercises can help in proper recovery after your fissure surgery.

  • Child’s Pose (Balasana)- This pose helps improve circulation around the anus and relieve constipation while relaxing the lower back, hips, and legs. It is said to provide a massage to the internal organs.
  • Pelvic Floor Contraction- Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can make it easy to pass stool, relax the anal sphincter, and prevent straining.
  • Legs Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)- This asana can raise circulation around the anus while relieving discomfort and irritation.
  • Wind-Relieving Pose (Pawanmuktasana)- This pose provides pressure to the abdomen, which can help enhance digestive comfort. It also helps relax the muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, and anus.
  • Deep breathing- This exercise helps alleviate pelvic floor muscle tension and promote relaxation.
  • Bound Angle Pose- This pose can improve flexibility in the inner thighs, groin, and knees. It can also help stimulate the abdominal organs and ease digestive discomfort.

Medications To Take During Recovery

There are several different medicines a healthcare provider may suggest to the patient for a better recovery. It includes:

Laxatives

Laxatives are a kind of medicine that helps in easy defecation. Adults are generally prescribed bulk-forming laxative tablets after their fissure surgery. These work by helping the poop retain fluid, making it softer and less likely to dry out. Children are prescribed an osmotic laxative oral solution. This kind of laxative works by increasing the fluid in the bowels, which stimulates the body to poop.

Painkillers

If you have prolonged pain after defecation, your healthcare provider may suggest taking common painkillers, like paracetamol or ibuprofen. If you decide to take these medicines after the surgery, follow the dosage instructions on the packet.

Glyceryl trinitrate

Your healthcare provider may prescribe glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), an ointment applied to the anal canal, twice a day. GTN works by expanding vessels in and around the anus, boosting the blood supply to the surgical area and helping it heal faster. You will have to use GTN ointment for at least 4 weeks after the surgery.

Topical anesthetics

Your healthcare provider may prescribe a topical anesthetic if you have severe anal pain after your fissure surgery. A topical medicine is one you rub directly into the affected area. Lidocaine is the most commonly prescribed topical anesthetic to enhance recovery after surgery. It comes in either a gel or an ointment and is only used for a short time (a few days).

Calcium channel blockers

Calcium channel blockers, like diltiazem, are a medicine used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). However, topical calcium channel blockers applied directly to the anus have also proved helpful in boosting recovery after fissure surgery. Topical calcium channel blockers relax the sphincter muscle and increase blood supply to the affected area. These blockers are considered as effective as GTN ointment for enhancing recovery and may be recommended if other medicines have not helped.

Common FAQs Around Fissure Recovery

Can I eat everything after fissure surgery?

You can eat your normal diet after your fissure surgery. However, if your stomach is upset, try eating low-fat foods like plain rice, broiled chicken, and toast. In addition, drink plenty of fluids and eat high-fiber foods after your surgery.

How do you sit after fissure surgery?

You may do what you feel comfortable doing after your fissure surgery. However, do not sit for longer than 10 to 20 minutes at a time. Also, sit on a foam pillow but avoid rubber rings or donuts.

What are the food items to avoid to ensure a worry-free recovery after your fissure surgery?

Avoid items like dairy products, red meat, spicy foods, alcoholic beverages, and processed foods after your fissure surgery.

Can I eat rice after fissure surgery?

It is always better to eat brown rice after your surgery for a better recovery. Brown rice is highly rich in dietary fiber due to its unpolished outer layer. In addition, fiber helps improve bowel movements and assists in preventing and treating fissures.

How do you sleep after fissure surgery?

Sleeping on your stomach and placing a pillow under your hips is always better to ease pain and discomfort. Also, a full body warm bath before going to bed is recommended for reducing pain levels and helping you fall asleep better.
