  • What is Grade 1 Gyno?

Breast tissue growth in males occurs in 4 stages, and each stage, also called grade, helps to identify the severity of the condition. Grade 1 gyno is the first stage of development of glandular tissues in which there is slight enlargement behind the areola, which is referred to as puffy nipples. The growth is usually unnoticeable, but the individual can feel the difference.

Type 1 gyno can occur due to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes during puberty or aging, underlying medical conditions, certain medications, etc.

In many cases, people can also mistake the growth for fat tissues and don’t seek out treatment, believing that it will go away on its own. However, grade 1 gynecomastia is less likely to go away on its own. Therefore, it’ll be best to talk to an experienced gynecomastia doctor and get proper treatment.

How is Grade 1 Gynecomastia Diagnosed?

To understand the cause of gynecomastia and identify the most suitable treatment options, the doctor will conduct a few tests. These tests will include the following:

    • Physical Exam: In a physical examination, the doctor will assess the shape and size of the breast tissue growth and check whether fat tissues are also present.
    • Blood Tests: A complete blood test is done to measure the hormone levels, including testosterone, estrogen, and prolactin. The excess of estrogen or deficiency of testosterone is checked.
    • Ultrasound: This test is done to examine the breast tissue growth composition, whether it is mainly fat tissues or glandular tissue growth is also present.
    • Mammography: This test is done to identify if any abnormalities are present in the tissues. It helps to determine whether the growth is malignant.
    • Biopsy: Even when ultrasound and mammography results are normal, the doctor may still recommend a biopsy to examine the tissue. This helps to confirm the diagnosis of gynecomastia.

Besides these tests, the doctor will take a detailed medical history of the patient, including the symptoms, medication intake (prescribed and over-the-counter), recreational drug usage, or any underlying medical condition.

Based on these evaluations and the test results, the doctor recommends the best approach for grade 1 gynecomastia treatment.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

    Grade 1 Gynecomastia Treatment Options

The management and treatment options for stage 1 gyno include the following:

    • Observation: Initially, the doctor will advise the patient to wait and monitor the growth while the cause of gynecomastia is addressed. At this time, the patient may also be advised to wear a support or compression garment to reduce the discomfort.
    • Hormonal Therapy: In some cases, mostly adults, hormone replacement therapy is recommended to patients to correct the imbalance and halt breast tissue growth. Hormonal therapy may include testosterone medications or patches, androgen therapy, anti-estrogen therapy, progesterone therapy, aromatase inhibitors, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), etc. Each of these therapies targets the male or female hormone growth to maintain the balance and halt breast tissue growth.
    • Surgery: In cases where other methods were proven ineffective, grade 1 gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) may be recommended to the patient. It involves the removal of the enlarged breast tissues and fat tissues (if any) to contour the chest area.

The suitable options for grade 1 gynecomastia treatment are discussed with the patient, and a final decision is made.

Lifestyle Changes for Stage 1 Gyno Management and Treatment

If the doctor believes that lifestyle changes can be helpful to manage and treat stage 1 gynecomastia, he/she may recommend the following lifestyle changes:

    • Weight Management:  Maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise, as excess body fat can contribute to hormonal imbalances that may exacerbate gynecomastia.
    • Balanced Diet: Eat a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting the intake of processed foods and high-fat diets. This can help to regulate hormones.
    • Exercises: Incorporate regular physical activities, including strength training, to reduce overall body fat. This can help to improve the chest contours.
    • Medication Review: Don’t take any medications without consulting the doctor and get all the prescribed medications reviewed. The doctor will adjust the medicine dosages or recommend an alternative that doesn’t contribute to hormonal imbalance.
    • Alcohol and Substance Abuse: Limit alcohol consumption and avoid using recreational drugs like marijuana as they can impact the hormone levels and lead to the progression of the condition.
    • Maintain Hormonal Balance: The body’s balance gets affected by stress, lack of sleep, or some other condition, such as liver or kidney disease. It’s advised to maintain the levels and take proper measures.
    • Monitoring: Regular monitoring of the condition is also essential to ensure it is not progressing.

To manage grade 1 gyno, it’ll be best to have a detailed discussion with the doctor and follow his/her advice strictly. If lifestyle changes fail to yield the desired results, the patient can consider other treatment options, such as gynecomastia surgery

Does Grade 1 Gyno Go Away Without Surgery?

Grade 1 or stage 1 gyno in teenagers can resolve without surgery. When gynecomastia develops due to hormonal imbalance caused by puberty, it is called pubertal gynecomastia.

It develops as a normal part of growth and often goes away on its own within a few years when the hormones start to stabilize. If the tissues continue to grow or the condition doesn’t resolve and persists in adulthood, the individual will need to consider other options, such as hormonal therapy or surgery, for an effective solution.

In adult males, the doctors usually determine the cause of breast tissue growth before suggesting a treatment option. If non-surgical methods of treatment don’t work out, the doctor will ultimately recommend undergoing gynecomastia surgery.

    Grade 1 Gynecomastia Surgery

The Grade 1 gyno surgery entails the removal of the breast glandular tissues and fat tissues that are enlarged. The surgery is called male breast reduction or gynecomastia surgery. It is a minimally invasive approach that combines liposuction and gland excision techniques to effectively treat the condition.

The grade 1 gyno surgery involves the following techniques:

    • At first, the liposuction technique is used to remove the fat tissues. For this, a small incision is made beneath the breast, in the underarm, or around the areola to access the fat tissues. Depending on the technique of liposuction, the fat tissues are removed through a cannula to make the glandular tissues more defined.
    • Once the glandular tissues are demarcated (marking of boundaries of tissues) from the surrounding tissues, a scalpel is used to resect the breast glandular tissues with precision.

Depending on the severity of the condition, these techniques may be used as a standalone procedure, but the most pleasing aesthetic results are achieved through a combination of these techniques, i.e., male breast reduction surgery.

Benefits of Stage 1 Gynecomastia Treatment

Treating stage 1 gynecomastia can offer several benefits to the patient:

Improved Self-Esteem: Gynecomastia treatment can enhance self-confidence and self-esteem, particularly in individuals who may feel self-conscious about their chest appearance.

Enhanced Body Image: Treatment can help achieve a more masculine chest contour, aligning with an individual’s desired body image.

Psychological Well-Being: Reducing gynecomastia can positively impact mental health, reducing feelings of embarrassment or anxiety related to the condition.

Elimination of Underlying Causes: If gynecomastia is caused by an underlying medical condition or medication, addressing it can prevent potential complications.

The specific benefits may vary depending on individual circumstances and the chosen treatment approach.

    Grade 1 Gynecomastia Surgery Cost

On average, grade 1 gynecomastia surgery cost in India is Rs. 35,000 to Rs. 60,000. This is an estimated price range, and the actual cost of gynecomastia surgery might vary for each patient depending on the following factors:

    • The amount of tissues that need to be removed.
    • The surgeon’s, anesthetists, and assisting surgeon’s fees.
    • Hospital-related expenses, including nursing fees, OR charges, nursing fees, etc.
    • Diagnostic tests and evaluations
    • Prescribed medications or hormonal therapy
    • Post-op care and follow-ups

Risks Involved with Grade 1 Gyno Surgery

Surgical treatment for grade 1 gynecomastia, typically known as male breast reduction surgery, is generally considered safe.

However, some risks or complications may occur during or after the surgery. These potential risks and complications include the following

    • Infection at the incision site
    • Hematoma or blood accumulation in the treated area
    • Seroma or fluid accumulation in the treatment area
    • Changes in nipple sensation if nerves are damaged during the surgery
    • Asymmetrical shape or contours of the chest region
    • The scar may heal abnormally, causing visible scarring
    • Allergic reaction to anesthesia, sutures, gloves, or other surgical materials

If these risks occur, they may require further intervention. Besides these, some patients may develop rare complications, such as aspiration due to anesthesia, deep vein thrombosis, etc.

Doctors usually assess these risks for the patient before proceeding with surgery and also take the necessary measures to mitigate them.

Recovery And Results of Stage 1 Gyno Surgery

The recovery after gynecomastia surgery, irrespective of the grade, takes around 2 to 4 weeks. In the first few days, the patient will have significant swelling and bruising, which will take 2-3 weeks to subside. The patient can resume most activities within a week and is advised to take several precautions to prevent recurrence.

The results of stage 1 gynecomastia surgery are usually satisfying for most patients. Once the surgery’s side effects subside, the patient can clearly notice the difference in the chest shape, size, and contours.

As the surgery aims to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour, once the excess tissues are removed, there will be significant improvement. The mild enlargement will completely disappear, and the chest on both sides will appear symmetrical.

As a minimally invasive technique is used for gynecomastia surgery, the scarring is also minimal. The scars also fade away over time and become less noticeable. Thus, most patients experience a boost in their self-confidence after surgery.

Common FAQs Around Grade 1 Gynecomastia

Is grade 1 gynecomastia surgery cost covered by health insurance?

The chances of getting insurance coverage for gynecomastia treatment at grade 1 are quite rare. Typically, at stage 1, gynecomastia doesn’t cause any physical discomfort or pain, as the symptoms are hardly noticeable.

Thus, the surgery won’t be considered a medical necessity, and the insurance company may not provide approval for the insurance claim.

What is the fastest way to get rid of grade 1 gyno?

The fastest way to get grade 1 gyno treated is surgery. The surgery takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and the procedure involves removing the breast tissues in the safest way possible. The patient can go home on the same day and recover within a week with almost negligible chances of recurrence.

How do I know if I have true gynecomastia or only chest fat?

It is quite difficult for individuals to differentiate between chest fat and glandular tissues. Only a doctor will be able to tell clearly whether you have true gynecomastia or only chest fat, i.e., pseudo-gynecomastia.

After waiting a long time, I finally found a fantastic surgeon—Dr. Jagadish Kiran—to do my gynecomastia surgery. Because of the good feedback I had heard from my brother, who had had the same procedure performed by Dr. Jagadish, I flew from Kolkata to Hyderabad to have the operation done by him.
