What is Left Renal Calculus?

Renal calculus or kidney stones are hard, mineral deposits that form in the kidneys. These stones can form in either or both kidneys. Stones that form in the left kidney are referred to as left renal calculus. These stones can form for a range of reasons, and the exact cause can differ from person to person. There may be a difference in the composition, size, shape, and number of stones.

Renal calculus is categorized into calcium oxalate stones, calcium phosphate stones, struvite stones, cystine stones, and uric acid stones. All these stones can cause different symptoms, and the intensity of the symptoms may also vary. Left renal calculus isn’t dangerous in all cases and may not even require treatment if the stones are too small, and there’s a possibility that they can pass on their own. However, there’s always a chance of complications in the case of kidney stones, and therefore, it is advisable for patients to seek medical intervention in time. The treatment for these stones also differs depending on the size, number, and type of stone and consists of both surgical and non-surgical methods.

Causes of Left Renal Calculus

Left renal calculus or kidney stones can form due to various factors. The causes of both left and right renal calculus are alike. Some common causes of left renal calculus are as follows:

  • Lack of hydration in the body: Being dehydrated or consuming too little water in a day can also put you at an increased risk of developing stones in the kidney. This is because insufficient fluid can cause the urine to become concentrated with certain minerals, which can further cause kidney stones to form.
  • Improper diet: Having an unbalanced diet and eating too much protein, sodium, and sugar can put you at an increased risk of left renal calculus. In addition, foods with high oxalate content, such as spinach, nuts, and chocolate, can also lead to stone formation.
  • Genetic reasons: Individuals who have a family history of kidney stones are more likely to develop them.
  • Urinary tract infections: Kidney stones, especially struvite stones, form as a result of a urinary tract infection that has lasted for a prolonged period.
  • Certain medicines: Certain medicines, including diuretics, can increase a person’s risk of left renal calculus.
  • Health conditions: Certain health conditions, such as hypothyroidism and gout, are also a leading cause of kidney stones in both men and women.
  • Being overweight: Being overweight or obese is linked with insulin resistance and metabolic derangements that may lead to the formation of kidney stones. Therefore, being overweight can also increase the risk of stone formation.

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Symptoms of Left Renal Calculus

Left renal calculus can manifest its presence through a range of symptoms that can cause mild to severe discomfort. Listed below are the most common symptoms of left renal calculus that you must keep an eye out for:

  • Pain: Pain is the most common symptom of left renal calculus and often the first one. The pain caused by stones can be severe and fluctuating. It typically occurs in the flank region, which is the area between the ribs and the hip, on the left side of the body, in the case of left renal calculus. The pain may travel to the groin, abdomen, or back.
  • Frequent urination: Left renal calculus can increase the urge to urinate and may cause the patient to have frequent visits to the toilet.
  • Painful urination or difficulty passing urine: Kidney stones can cause pain or a burning sensation during urination. In some cases, they can obstruct the urinary tract, making it difficult for individuals to pass urine.
  • Blood in the urine: Some patients may notice blood in the urine. This condition is known as hematuria. The color of the urine may change to pink, red, or brown in color if the patient has kidney stones.
  • Fever and chills: In the case of a stone infection, the patients can experience fever and chills.

How Is Left Renal Calculus Diagnosed?

To confirm the presence of left renal calculus, the doctor can suggest a range of tests. Typically the diagnostic process starts with a physical assessment of the patient. In a physical exam, the doctor may assess your abdomen by pressing on it to check for swelling or tenderness. They may also check your vitals and ask you questions about your medical history, the symptoms you’re experiencing, any medications you’re taking, etc.

Imaging tests: Some imaging tests performed to confirm the presence of left renal calculus and determine their size and location include:

  • X-rays: X-rays can detect left renal calculus, but they may not show up if the stone is small or what they’re made up of.
  • Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of the kidney and can detect most types of left renal calculus.
  • CT scan: CT scan produces detailed images of the kidneys and can help look for small kidney stones.

Urinalysis: Urinalysis helps check for the presence of blood, infection, or crystals in the urine.

Blood tests: Blood tests are performed to check for signs of infection or abnormal levels of minerals that can contribute to kidney stone formation.

The doctors lay out a personalized treatment plan for patients only after a thorough diagnosis of the condition. It helps them plan the most suitable treatment for the patients.

Treatment Options for Left Renal Calculus

Treatment options for left renal calculus range from non-surgical to surgical. The treatment that would work best for a particular patient depends on how complex their renal calculus condition is, their overall health, etc. When the stones are small and the symptoms are manageable, non-surgical treatments can work just fine. But, if the renal calculus accompanies discomforting symptoms, the patients may require surgery for removal. We will further discuss the different treatment options for left renal calculus.

Non-conservative treatment

  • Pain Medication: Patients with left renal calculus typically experience pain and discomfort, especially while passing a small stone. To help relieve the pain associated with the condition and allow patients to pass the stones comfortably, the doctors sometimes suggest pain-relieving medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, sodium, etc.
  • Medical therapy: Sometimes, doctors suggest alpha-blockers, medications that help relax the muscles in the ureter and allow the stone to pass without causing much discomfort. The most commonly prescribed alpha-blockers include tamsulosin or a combination of dutasteride and tamsulosin drugs.

Surgical & Non-Surgical Procedures for Left Renal Calculus Treatment

  • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy or ESWL: This non-invasive procedure involves targeting renal calculus and removing them with the help of shock waves. This procedure is x-ray or ultrasound-guided. The stones are located with imaging tests and then broken down with the help of shockwaves. The fragmented calculus is allowed to flush out of the body on its own. This outpatient procedure is suggested for small to medium-sized kidney stones and only takes 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Ureteroscopic lithotripsy or URSL: This procedure of left renal calculus treatment is considered effective for the removal of small to medium-sized stones that can’t be treated through conservative methods. The doctors use a ureteroscope to remove the calculus through the urethra. This is an x-ray-guided procedure, i.e., the doctors perform an X-ray simultaneously to locate the stones correctly. Upon locating, the stones are pulled out of the system. Sometimes, a laser is used to fragment the stone. A ureteral stent is placed afterward.
  • Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy or PCNL: PCNL is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves left renal calculus removal through a small incision in the flank area. This procedure is suggested if the patient is diagnosed with large stones. In this X-ray-guided procedure, the doctors use X-ray to determine the location of the calculus. After locating the stone, they access the urine-collecting system with the help of a thin needle and use a guidewire in the process. After getting access, the surgeons use instruments to remove the stones or use a laser to break the stones before extracting them. Finally, a DJ stent is placed to prevent swelling and allow urine to drain seamlessly.
  • Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): This is another minimally-invasive procedure involving the removal of renal calculus with an optic endoscope, i.e., a long and flexible tube with a camera. The endoscope is inserted into the urethra to access the urine-collecting part of the kidneys. The surgeons perform this procedure with X-ray guidance to get the accurate location of the stones. The stones are broken with a laser probe, and the fragmented pieces are collected in a stone basket before removal. A double J stent may be used before or after surgery. RIRS is an advanced left renal calculus treatment procedure, and patients can return home in a day or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between left and right renal calculus?

Left and right renal calculus are both kidney stones. The only difference between the two is that left renal calculus forms in the left kidney, and right renal calculus forms in the right kidney. There’s no other between the two.

Is renal calculus and kidney stones the same thing?

Yes. Renal calculus is another term for kidney stones, which is typically more commonly used to describe stones that form in the kidneys. You can use both terms interchangeably.

What increases the risk of left renal stones?

While anyone can develop left kidney stones, there are several factors that can put you at an increased risk of developing left renal stones. These may include:

  • Consuming a high-sodium diet
  • Drinking very less water
  • Having a family history of the disease
  • Being overweight

Can left renal stones be life-threatening?

It depends. In some cases, left renal stones don’t cause severe symptoms and pass through the system on their own. However, sometimes, these stones can lead to infections or may get stuck in the ureters leading to life-threatening complications. Renal failure and kidney damage are relatively dangerous complications of left renal stones.

Can kids get left renal calculus?

Yes. Kids of all age groups can get left renal calculus, especially if they have a family history of the disease. Teens are more likely to get stones compared to children who’re younger children.

Is treatment necessary in the case of left renal calculus?

Whether treatment is necessary for left renal calculus depends upon how severe the condition is and what complications it may cause. If the stones are small and can be managed with home remedies and lifestyle changes, treatment may not be necessary. However, if the stones are relatively large in size, and there’s a risk of complications, treatment may become necessary.

Untreated left renal calculus can block the ureters, and cause narrowing, increasing the risk of urine buildup, infection, and damage to the kidney. Therefore, it is advisable to seek timely treatment for kidney stones before the condition worsens.

What does left renal calculus pain feel like?

Left renal calculus pain can feel like a sharp pain in the lower abdomen, chiefly on the left side. Some individuals may also experience pain and burning while urinating.

Will my left renal calculus treatment be covered under insurance?

Treatment, especially surgery, is recommended in severe cases of left renal calculus when it’s medically necessary. In such cases, most insurance companies cover the cost of the treatment in their health insurance and mediclaim plans. But, medical management of kidney stones may not be covered by insurance. Reach out to your respective insurance provider to understand the insurance coverage of left renal calculus in India, their terms and conditions, and how much coverage they offer.
