What is Left Renal Concretion?

Left renal concretions are solid masses made of different minerals that form in the left kidney. They are the same as right renal concretions, but they form in the left kidney. Anyone can get these stones, but certain lifestyle choices put some individuals at an increased risk of developing them. While renal concretions are typically harmless and pass through the system on their own, they can sometimes lead to complications as serious as kidney diseases and failure. The size of the stones varies, and they can be as small as a grain of grain to as big as the size of a tennis ball.

Renal concretions also differ based on their composition. Calcium oxalate stones, calcium phosphate stones, struvite stones, uric acid stones, and cystine stones are the most commonly found renal concretions, which form due to different reasons. If an individual has left renal concretion, he will most likely experience pain in the flank area, i.e., the side areas of the lower back that extends to the sides and the abdomen, fever, chills, vomiting, smelly or cloudy urine, feeling of burning while urinating, etc.

Causes & Risk Factors of Left Renal Concretion

Several factors can contribute to the formation of left renal concretion. The cause of the condition is bound to differ for all individuals. Renal concretions can form due to hereditary factors such as having a family history of the condition, as well as due to lifestyle habits and underlying health conditions. Some factors put individuals at an increased risk of developing left renal concretions. Some risk factors for renal concretion are as follows:

  • Lack of hydration in the body
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Consuming a diet with high levels of protein, salt, or glucose
  • Having a hyper parathyroid condition
  • Gastric bypass surgery
  • Inflammatory bowel diseases that increase calcium absorption
  • Taking medications such as triamterene diuretics, antiseizure drugs, and calcium-based antacids
  • Having a history of kidney stones
  • Polycystic kidney disease

Are you going through any of these symptoms?

Symptoms of Left Renal Concretion

Left renal concretions are sometimes asymptomatic but typically accompany several discomforting symptoms. The symptoms and their severity can vary for each individual, based on the type of stone the patient has, its location, and the patient’s overall health.

Patients with left renal concretions can experience mild to severe pain in their flank area that can radiate to the sides, abdomen, back, or groin depending on the severity of the disease. While some patients complain of mild, persistent pain, which is always present, some experience fluctuating pain that comes and goes and may differ in intensity.

Aside from pain, urinary symptoms are also a common indication of left renal concretion. For example, if you have an increased urge to urinate, discolored urine, pink, red, or brown blood in the urine, or discolored urine, you may have renal concretions. Fever and chills may also occur if the patient has developed a stone infection.

Diagnosis Of Left Renal Concretion

The doctors suggest a combination of tests to diagnose left renal concretion. These tests help the doctors understand the severity of the condition and rule out any complexities that might complicate treatment. The doctor begins the diagnostic process with a physical examination of the patient, which involves an assessment of the patient’s symptoms, their medical history, etc. The doctor also checks the flank area for inflammation or swelling. After the physical assessment, the doctors suggest some standard diagnostic tests for kidney stones, including:

  • Urine tests or urinalysis: Urine tests show the level of minerals in your urine that may have caused stones to form. By understanding, If the test shows bacteria or white blood cells in the urine, it may indicate that you have a urinary tract infection.
  • Blood tests: The doctors may collect samples of your blood and send them to the lab for evaluation to determine the levels of certain minerals in the blood. A blood test also helps rule out the presence of an infection.
  • Abdominal X-ray: An abdominal X-ray produces pictures of the abdomen, which help detect the number and location of the kidney stones. But, an X-ray may not show all stones of all sizes, and the patients may require more advanced tests for an accurate diagnosis.
  • Computed tomography Scan (CT scan): A CT scan provides images of the urinary tract and helps doctors figure out the size and location of the stones and see if a stone is blocking the urinary tract. In addition, a CT scan can also help look for conditions that may have caused the stone to form. This test is considered more advanced and accurate compared to an X-ray.

Preparing For Left Renal Concretion Treatment

As with any other surgery, preparing for left renal concretion treatment helps in many ways. It brings down the risk of surgery-related complications and also helps patients remain calm and composed during the procedure. So, here are important guidelines that you must follow to receive a hassle-free treatment for left renal concretions:

  • Ensure your bowel is clean and empty before the surgery.
  • Do a bowel prep. This preparation includes using laxatives and enemas to clear out the bowel before the surgery.
  • Be careful of what you eat, starting a few days before the day of the surgery. Make modifications in your diet, and avoid junk food and anything spicy or too oily.
  • If you smoke, make sure you quit or stop about 2 weeks before the surgery. Smoking can affect the healing and recovery process.
  • It’s normal to have questions regarding surgery. Make sure you get your queries addressed with the doctor in advance. This will help you remain calm and composed during treatment.
  • If you are on medication, convey it to your doctor before the surgery. Some medicines can cause hindrances in the surgical process and must be discontinued before the day of surgery.

Treatment Options for Left Renal Concretion

For left renal concretions that are relatively small in size, conservative treatments can give effective outcomes. If the doctor suspects you may have small or medium renal concretions and surgery isn’t necessary, they may suggest the following:

  • Alpha blockers: Alpha blockers are medications that relax the muscles in the ureter and allow stones to pass easily through the system. This allows patients to get rid of the stones with minimal discomfort.
  • Pain relieving medications: Passing stones can bring along pain and agony for the patients. To minimize pain, the doctor may suggest pain-relieving medications. The most commonly suggested pain-relieving medicines include ibuprofen and naproxen sodium.

Along with these medications, the doctor may also suggest patients increase their fluid intake, as doing so can help stones pass naturally through the system.

When the renal concretions become enlarged, and patients find it to pass them naturally, non-surgical and surgical procedures may be suggested. Some common non-surgical and surgical procedures for the treatment of large renal concretions are as follows:

  • Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy or ESWL: This is a commonly performed, non-invasive procedure for the removal of kidney stones. It uses a combination of shockwaves and X-ray or ultrasound to get the precise location of the stones, break them into smaller pieces, and help them pass through the system naturally. This is an outpatient procedure that is performed for the removal of small-sized left renal concretions.
  • Ureteroscopic lithotripsy or URSL: This surgical solution is also suggested for small to medium-sized stones and is considered quite effective. It involves the use of a ureteroscope for the removal of concretions. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and the patient can return home the same day or a day after.
  • Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS): This is another advanced surgery for left renal concretions, which is performed with an optic endoscope. The stones are accessed through the urethra, and X-ray guidance is used throughout the procedure for precision. The procedure is minimally-invasive and requires a hospital stay of a day or two.
  • Tunnel Surgery or Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): This is another minimally-invasive surgery for renal concretion, which, unlike other surgeries, involves a small incision. This procedure is generally suggested to treat large renal concretions.

After all left renal concretion treatments, the doctor will advise you to make some lifestyle modifications such as increasing your intake of water and healthy fluids, eating the right foods, maintaining a healthy body weight, and adopting other healthy habits. This will not only help pass the remaining stone fragments easily but will also help prevent stone formation in the future.

Recovery After Left Renal Concretion Treatment

Typically, it can take a few days to several weeks to recover after left renal concretion treatment. Recovery time is based on the type of procedure performed, underlying conditions, and the patient’s overall health. Here’s how long recovery takes after different left renal concretion treatments:

  • ESWL: After an ESWL procedure, patients can return home on the same day of the procedure. Complete recovery typically takes just 1 to 2 days.
  • URSL- Following the URSL procedure, you may be asked to stay in the hospital for a night. Patients can return to their routine within 4 to 7 days of surgery.
  • PCNL- Patients may have to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after the surgery. Total recovery can take from 2 to 4 weeks.
  • RIRS- Patients may have to spend a night or two in the hospital following the RIRS procedure. Complete recovery after this surgery can take up to 7 to 10 days.

Benefits of Left Renal Concretion Treatment

Getting timely treatment for left renal concretion has several benefits. The potential advantages of getting the stones removed in time are as follows:

  • The major advantage of the treatment is the elimination of the stone from the body. This help prevents complications that can occur due to the stones, including obstruction of the urinary tract, infections, etc.
  • After treatment, patients see a significant improvement in the pain they were earlier experiencing due to the stones. All kidney stone treatments effectively reduce the pain caused by stones.
  • If the stones have affected kidney function or there’s a possibility of hindrance, treatment can help treat or prevent it and maintain healthy kidney function.
  • Left renal concretions accompany the risk of complications that may, in some cases, lead to serious kidney damage. Treatment helps prevent that.
  • Patients who’ve received treatment for left renal concretions can see a major improvement in their quality of life. Treatment helps reduce the symptoms significantly and allows them to resume their routine activities with ease.
  • Treatment for left renal concretions can help reduce the risk of renal concretion formation in the future. But, the patients may be required to make lifestyle changes after treatment.

Questions To Ask The Doctor Before Left Renal Concretions Treatment

It is natural for patients to have some questions before the left renal concretions treatment. The questions can be regarding the severity of their condition, the treatment, recovery, and so on. Your doctor will resolve all your queries beforehand to help you remain calm during surgery and resolve any apprehensions you may have about treatment. Here are some questions you can ask the doctor before your left renal concretions treatment:

  • How many stones do I have?
  • Is my condition serious?
  • What is the cause of my stones?
  • Can my condition get better on its own?
  • Which treatment option would be best for me?
  • Are there any risks associated with the particular treatment?
  • How long will recovery take after treatment?
  • What can I do to prevent stones from recurring?
  • What can I do to speed up my recovery?
  • When can I go back home after my treatment?

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I see a doctor for left renal concretions?

Renal concretions, left or right, can exhibit multiple symptoms, and it is essential for the patients to recognize these symptoms in time. Recognizing these symptoms in time can help patients prevent the condition from aggravating by seeking timely treatment. Here are some signs to see a doctor for left renal concretions treatment:

  • You have excruciating pain in the flank area.
  • You have blood in the urine
  • You have a fever, chills, nausea
  • You have severe urinary symptoms

Which is the best treatment for left renal concretion?

Renal concretions can be treated through a range of methods, and different methods work differently for individuals. Therefore, there’s no single ‘best’ method of left renal concretion treatment. While medication can give the desired results for one person, surgery may be the most suitable option for someone else.

Am I at an increased risk of kidney disease if I have left renal concretions?

Yes. Renal concretions increase the risk of kidney disease in individuals, especially when they’re left untreated. Therefore, to avoid the risk of kidney disease, and other complications, such as stone-related infections, kidney damage, and renal failure, patients must seek timely treatment for the condition.

Is left renal concretion treatment expensive in India?

The cost of left renal concretion treatment depends upon the type of treatment you’re receiving, in addition to other factors. Here’s a treatment-wise bifurcation of the cost based on the type of procedure:

  • ESWL: Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 60,000
  • URSL: Rs. 65,000 to Rs. 80,000
  • PCNL: Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1,00,000
  • Open Surgery: Rs. 1,00,000 to Rs, 2,00,000

Can large left renal concretions cause injury in the kidneys or ureter?

Yes. With large renal concretions, there persists a risk of obstruction of the ureters, which can ultimately affect urine flow. Therefore, if the doctor suspects the patient may have large concretions, they may suggest timely treatment.

Can left renal concretions be fatal?

In most cases, renal concretions pose no threat to the patient’s life and pass through the system without causing any discomfort to the patient. But, in some cases, these stones can lead to kidney damage and renal disease that can be potentially life-threatening.
